One of the long running annual series of leaflets/brochures issued by the SNCF - Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer Français - on the regions of France. I have steadily grown to rather like French railway publicity from the 1950s and early 1960s before they, like BR, moved away from commissioned artworks to photography for both posters and publicity. This is the English language edition for the Cote D'Azur and Corsica issued in 1960 and with a superb cover by Guy Georges-Perceval.

The quiet end of day....and the shining Mediterranean gently lapping the dark wet pebbled beach along the French Riviera, at the foot of the Maritime Alps of Provence. From my archives.
Around 1860 a railroad was built along what was to become the famous French Mediterranean coastline known as the 'riviera'. The railroad made it much easier to get to the towns along the sea, given that there were no cars yet!! European aristocracy started coming down and building extravagant and beautiful mansions, but this little fishing village still exists as a testament to the everyday working people who made Menton in the first place and have left us a legacy of village life in its little hilltop houses crowded along steep stairways and very narrow passages. It's a wonderful little town.
