Cosenza has been occupied for over twenty-five hundred years in one form or another, it is a city rich in history, culture and ritual, it is beautifully spread across seven hills much like its grander larger 2nd cousin twice removed Rome. The seven hills of Cosenza are named Crati, Pancrazio, Torrevetere, Guarassano, Triglio, Venneri, Gramazio, and Mussano they not only form the geographical heart of Cosenza but they are also form the city’s coat of arms. This city's appeal transcends its monuments, churches and museums, the true essence of a place and its people is captured through its many culinary delights, enduring traditions, warm hospitality, and breathtaking city views around every corner.

Cosenza once called the “Athens of Italy” is also known as the “City of the Bruzis”, it is one of the oldest cities in Calabria and extends across seven hills in the valley of the Crati river and at the meeting of the Busento stream. Alaric I, legendary King of the Visigoths sacked Rome in the early 5th century capturing a massive amount of gold and jewels he made it as far as Cosenza before contracting something that he could not fight with a sword killing him before he could make his way home. Alaric’s men buried the King and all the plunder they took from Rome with him under one of the rivers, whose course was diverted long enough to dig a tomb, they then killed all who knew about its location leaving one history’s biggest treasure hoards hidden in time, perhaps somewhere in this scene.

San Nicola Arcella, Cosenza

While wandering around Cosenza in the rain this cute little church caught my eye there was just something about it that made me want to explore the inside of this lonely location but unfortunately I had to settle for this outside shot. The Chiesetta di San Rocco was built in 1656 to thank San Rocco for saving the locals from a pretty nasty plague a few years earlier, today the church is no longer used and only attracts the attention of people like myself looking for the beauty in decay. Inside the church there are a pair of identical statues of the San Crispino and San Crispiniano the patron twin saints of cobblers, until a few years ago there existed a congregation of the cities shoemakers here but like their trade they were quickly wearing out with no replacements.

ITALIAN EXCELLENCE IN THE WORLD

The red onion of Tropea is the name given to the red onion (Allium cepa) grown between Nicotera, in the province of Vibo Valentia, and Campora San Giovanni, in the municipality of Amantea, in the province of Cosenza, and along the Tyrrhenian belt. It is mainly produced between Briatico and Capo Vaticano.

It is made up of various fleshy concentric tunics of white color and with red wrapping; it has been cultivated in these areas for over two thousand years, imported by the Phoenicians, and for over a century, now combined with tourism, it has contributed to the socio-economic development of the area. The sweetness of the vegetable seems to depend on the particularly stable microclimate in winter, without sudden changes in temperature due to the mildness exerted by the proximity of the sea, and on the fresh and loamy soils, which determine the valuable characteristics of the product.

The shape is round or ovoid.
