In the foreground: the morgue of the Hospice du Grand-Saint-Bernard.
This ossuary built in 1476, shelters the corpses mummified by the cold, lost dead in the pass, victims of the mountain and whose bodies have not been claimed. Object of morbid curiosity, it was walled up around 1950.

The midnight hour is close at hand
Creatures crawl in search of blood
To terrorize y'all's neighborhood
And whosoever shall be found
Without the soul for getting down
Must stand and face the hounds of hell
And rot inside a corpse's shell
The foulest stench is in the air
The funk of forty thousand years
And grizzly ghouls from every tomb
Are closing in to seal your doom
And though you fight to stay alive
Your body starts to shiver
For no mere mortal can resist
The evil of the thriller

This is the spectacular view you enjoy when you have made the steep climb up the "Old Corpse Road" path to these old ruins above Haweswater. I had been here a couple of times before, but wanted to try a morning shot when the light would hit the ruins and the distant Fells.
The sinister sounding name of the path is a throw back to the days when the village of Mardale was still well above the water levels of the much more recently created reservoir here. The deceased from the now submerged village were carried up and over here to the Parish of Shap for burial. The last body to make this journey was a certain John Holme in June of 1736 and yet the name of the track still retains this morose name!
This was actually one of the best days I've had out with the camera. It started with an impromptu, unplanned sunrise on Newbiggin Crag, before driving up and climbing up here. I then went on to climb the Riggindale Ridge, which you can see running up through the centre of this shot to High Street, which is the ridge on the skyline. Sadly, I slipped and twisted my right knee coming back down late in the day and the ligaments are still a bit sore today! The things you do in pursuit of photography!!
I waited in line for almost three hours to get a photo of this plant. It bloomed early yesterday morning. I went in the evening and it had already started to close. It only stays open for a day, and only blooms about every 7 - 10 years. It smells like rotting flesh...no, I did not smell it. This corpse plant is named "The Beast", The gardens were supposed to be closed at 9pm, but everyone that was in line at 8 were allowed to view it, I got there at 7:30 and finally got to see it at 10:45. There were probably at least 150 people behind me. It was a long night for the volunteers. It was in front of a window that is normally sunlit...my shot had a dark sky behind it.
Thanks for the views, comments and favs :)

It's a huge, rare flower called Titan arum, also known as a corpse flower. That name comes from the putrid stench that the flower gives off, which smells like rotting flesh, in order to attract the insects that it needs for pollination. Carrion beetles and flesh flies are its natural pollinators in the wild.
Native to Sumatran rain forests, these plants are endangered, and most remaining plants are cultivated in gardens around the world. This one is currently on display at the Chicago Botanic Garden, in Glencoe, Illinois, and is one of 18 corpse flowers that are housed there.
At about 6 feet tall when this shot was taken, the plant is currently in bloom. They typically bloom every three to four years. That huge bud in the center, called a spadex, grows about 5 to 6 inches per day for about two weeks. Then the flower structure around the bottom, called the spathe, opens up and the plant blasts its foul smelling odor for several hours to attract pollinators.
The Chicago Botanic Garden works with other gardens around the country to facilitate cross pollination. Pollen is exchanged with other gardens that also house these plants. I don't know for sure, but I suspect that the rectangular shape that is cut out near the bottom of the spathe is to facilitate the cross pollination effort.

A ruined barn just off the Old Corpse Road on Mardale Common.
Haweswater Reservoir fills the bottom of the valley with Harter and Riggindale Fells visible in the distance.
The Old Corpse Road runs from Mardale Green (now under the water of Haweswater Reservoir) to Swindle Head in the next valley to the east.
