At the Pismo Butterfly Gardens a male Monarch copulating with mate

Mating on the RSPB Lodge pond in 'copulation wheel'

1/500sec, ƒ/6.3, ISO 140, 450 mm, Ausschnitt 1:1, Seitenverhältnis 5:2

Probably Azure damselflies, but was unable to confirm the species. Seen on Coward's Marsh, Christchurch, Dorset

I was fortunate to witness these spiders mating. The female is on top. You can see the male sex organ called the pedipalp depositing semen into the epigynal opening of the female. I would like to know the species. I think that it is a Tetragnatha demissa or Long-jawed spider. They live on reeds on our dam and flatten their bodies against the reeds when threatened. For a closer view see next upload.

..oui, je sais encore! que voulez vous, je dois les attirer...mais ce coup ci c'est une autre espèce!

.. and reaches the leaf . The male is now attached and buzzes helplessly.

After the copulation , the queen will live and have her wasp colony . The "lucky" male will die .

No don't get too excited. It's not that x-rated!!!

Nearly every flower I passed had couples "at it"

Eastern Tailed-Blues (Cupido comyntas) mating.

Ken Reid Conservation Area, Sturgeon Lake, Kawartha Lakes, Ontario, Canada.

July 22, 2013.

I'm not 100% sure why this genus is called "Cupido", but I'm beginning to think I get it...

From Dictionary.com:

Latin "Cupīdō" Cupid, the personification of cupīdō desire, love, equivalent to cup ( ere ) to long for, desire + -īdō noun suffix (cf. libido)

I don't often post photos in this resolution, but thought I'd make an exception this time. :-)

We got out before sunrise. It was cool, in the low 70s. We found heavy fog on the wetlands next to our home. Two does were close by and barely visible. Vultures were like ghosts, and an egret looked so soft against the diffuse background. The fog began to lift a little after sunrise and a westerly breeze dried the vegetation. I visited the heron rookery, where three pairs of Yellow-crowned Night-Herons were displaying in courtship as well as hostility between males. A single night-heron had not yet fully molted from juvenal plumage. A pair of Green Herons were also present. Males of both species already had blood-red legs. Two Cottonmouths cavorted in the canal, which was loaded with small fish. On the way back home two shrikes had a friendly encounter. Mockingbirds, cardinals, Carolina Wrens and Red-winges Blackbirds were singing. It quickly warmed into the mid-80s. Visit rosy-finch.blogspot.com.

“Caught in the act”, both copulating Brown Leaf Weevil and Common Snipe Fly species were unfazed by the indiscretion of my probing camera lens. Any objections would have amounted to no more than the insects flying away for they do not bite. Dramatic scenes pertained to the sightings of several millipedes infected by a fungi parasite driving the host to climb to an atypical open and elevated spot before death with the parasitic lifeform thereafter feeding on its host before spreading its spores to the environment. Spiders guarded their webs for any unfortunate insect whereas ants were foraging for food to take back to their nests. This series concludes with images of Forked Scorpion flies for the males curling their tail like their ground dwelling desert namesakes, though they have no abilities to sting of bite. Arthropods are Amazing creatures.

Things were getting heated for this Osprey pair, with considerable copulation, the proverbial 'cloacal kiss', taking place. Iroquois, Ontario.

"In general osprey copulations begin about 14 days before, and peak in the few days before the start of egg laying. They occur frequently, but only 39% of copulations result in cloacal kiss. It may take 160 copulation attempts to successfully fertilize a female to form a clutch of eggs."

A great day to be out looking for Lepidoptera. Eighty-degree temps brought out the bugs. These lovers allowed a close approach. Many other butterflies including several Western Pine Elfins, Spring Azures, Mourning Cloaks, a California Tortoiseshell, Sara Orangtips, and my first ever Thicket Hairstreak.
