Would have liked the coot closer to the camera but also didn't want to lose the lovely pond surroundings & the reflections by focusing in too close so the coot had to stay distant:)

Enjoy a lovely weekend everyone & for those of you struggling with the heat, stay as cool as this coot!

Coot and quiet--two words that don't seem to go together. Because they are relatively heavy birds, they splash a lot on takeoff from or landing in water. That often causes a commotion by other coots when landing near a raft of them.

American Coots were very abundant at Merritt Island and at Orlando Wetlands on the East Coast of Florida.

Taken last Spring at Yorkshire Sculpture Park.

As always, thank you so much for stopping by and for leaving any comments or faves, they are very much appreciated.

A member of the rail family Rallidae and fond of swimming in open water even though unlike ducks coots do not have webbed feet. The distinctive white shield above the white beak earns it the title 'bald', hence the saying 'bald as a Coot'. These birds have been known to kill their own young if they have too many young to feed which is usually the youngest of the brood. Males are normally the more aggressive than the female, if an intruder enters their territory they will use their large feet and claws to chase them away using their spattering behaviour.

Same photo but full copped view for a portrait.

This group of coots decided to walk/skid across the ice, rather than fly. Looks like it should be set to music by Tchaikovsky

A member of the Rail family Rallidae and a close relative of the moorhen. The name Coot comes from that fact that in Latin Fulicia is coot and atra is black. Can often be seen swimming in open water. Sexes are very similar with the male being slightly larger than the female. They often seem to have many quarrels with each other striking each other with their feet.

A familiar bird of our wetlands, the Coot is often seen on park lakes, ponds and rivers. It spends more of its time on the water than its relative, the Moorhen, and will dive to catch small invertebrates. Unlike ducks, Coots will bring their catch to the surface before eating it, leading to squabbles over food. Coots breed in spring, laying between six and nine eggs in nests made among emergent vegetation. Coot chicks are black with orange fluff around the face and body; they are independent within two months of hatching.

The Coot can be distinguished from the similar-looking Moorhen by its larger size, entirely black body (with no white patches), and bright white bill. Coots spend much of their time away from the bankside, diving for food.

The coots veered towards me in their pursuit, affording an opportunity to get them both in the frame.

Ooo my hair is still good says a coot chick

If you look really closely at the chick and its reflection you will see that the bill is closed on the subject yet open in the reflection. The image hasn't been doctored and I can only imagine it has something to do with the ripples/refraction . Perhaps somebody out there could shed light on it.

Spent the last couple of weeks watching the Coots on a local lake!

The more I’ve observed them the more I’ve grown fond of them, very interesting & comical birds....& very vicious!! As I found out today! I watched & photographed them fighting aggressively for long periods.

Friday was a busy day for the coots, with lots of opportunities for us to catch the coots chasing.

This coot suddenly took off running, then stopped some distance from where it had been. Didn't see an imminent threat, so no idea what spurred the behavior!

Eurasian coot during nest building. Deep jet black color with garnet sheen. Very interesting legs.

American Coot- The legs are yellow green and they have chicken-like feet that are lobed, not webbed like a duck.
