Backyard Coopers Hawk in Chester County, PA
This may not be as sharp as I would have wished, but I am still pleased to have been able to capture this grab shot while complying with the stay at home directive

I couldn't choose between the two photos, so I am posting them both. Out looking for birds, the saying "save the best for last" really was relevant today. Not having much luck, I decided to go to one last spot before heading home, when suddenly I spotted this beautiful Cooper's Hawk seated neatly and low, next to a little stream and very close to the road. I backed the car up and was so happy it didn't take off. I only took a couple shots because I was so thankful it allowed me this mini photo shoot, and I didn't want to disturb it and flush it from its pretty spot. Surprises like this always make me catch my breath.

Accipiter cooperii - Cooper's Hawk
J'aurais bien aimer assister a son lunch, mais je suis arriver en retard
An immature Cooper's Hawk (Accipiter cooperii) who visits our yard on occasion, scaring the crap our of the little birds!
Cooper is a rescue dog. He is very damaged, obviously been abused. Any noise at all and he jumps and runs to hide under a bed. He digs holes in the shade house, great big ones. Chases the cats when I was told he is cat friendly. He is slowly getting use to the cats. When taken for walks he will stop and want to go back. Yeah could have taken him back but I didn’t want to. My friend who came with me was more or less told if he didn’t find a home before that weekend he would be put down. How could I return him knowing that ? I just couldn’t .
Walking along a trail this guy was quietly finishing his meal. Kind of cool just the two of us 50' away from each other and no one else on the trail.
This Cooper's Hawk may have just finished a meal a short while ago - note the fuzzy white feathers above the beak !
Seen at King Gillette Ranch, Malibu CA.

Cooper pops up, like a hand puppet, beyond the edge of the bed. (He checked the bed for humans, saw me, and dove back under the bed.)
This Coopers Hawk is surveying the shrubs below where smaller birds seek shelter. I have even seen this hawk on the ground hunting in the bushes.
Cooper's Hawk, My yard, Colwood, BC
A midmorning visitor to check out my bird feeders. No meal this time as all his potential prey scurried for cover - successfully!
I am beyond fortunate to have these Cooper's showing up multiple times a day right behind my house. I have learned so much about their behavior and temperament. Yesterday I was able to watch this one for over two hours, and this was caught during their grooming ritual.
This is the most cooperative Cooper's hawk I have ever seen. I walked all around him/her and watched it for an hour from a distance of 20 to 40 feet. He is sitting on a brush pile waiting for sparrows to forget that it is there, which they did four times exposing themselves to him, but he missed all four times. He chased a couple of birds that were in nearby trees and flew by so close several times that I could have reached out and touched him. Each time he he attempted to capture a bird he returned to the brush pile. I went in the house and returned several time, once to get my tripod. He was here from about 8:30 to noon. I left at noon so I don't know if he captured a meal but he was not here at 2:30 this afternoon when I returned home. IMG_0739
Saw a Starling on the edge of the bird bath and another posed on the suet feeder, neither one moving at all, not drinking, not eating. I thought this very odd, went to the other room to get my camera for a closer look, came back and they were both still "frozen in place". Another minute went by, then the Starling on the suet took off, swiftly followed by the other. A moment late this fellah flew in to survey the area! The Starlings must have been aware of him the whole time, not daring to move hoping to avoid being spotted. 10000 ISO
I'm pretty sure this is a Cooper's hawk juvenile because of the yellow eyes. If someone knows otherwise, let me know.
This hawk sat on one of the poles I hang my feeders on and I'm sure he was just waiting and watching, hoping too, to nab himself a little bird but it just wasn't happening. They all stayed far away from the feeders while he was here. Smart little birds
