The derelict control tower at Ludham airfield in Norfolk taken on 1st October 1989 and 10 years or so before restoration. Further information on flickr suggests it has fallen into disrepair again since.

These photos were offered by L Cpl William Grey, helicopter mechanic in the US Marine Corps. Will has been a Zen student since 1999. He continues his studies with Genpo Roshi by e-mail, both koan study and dokusan, during his last deployment in 2006, and is set to deploy to Iraq again in October 2007 to April 2008.

Working a seven day or seven night , 12 hour shift in accommodation you can glimpse in this photoset, with a day off to do his laundry, Will has little opportunity to practice zazen. His practice is a total commitment to his task, on which the lives of others depend – being completely present and proficient in the tedium and when the mortar bombs fall.

Fully involved in the normal comradeship of his unit, Will’s Zen is known and respected by his friends.

Today I was stuck in the house waiting for a parcel so I finally stopped being lazy and re-dyed my hair.

I'm naturally blonde and most people are like "WHY?" when they find out. I don't know, I've been various shades of blonde & brown but I always miss being ginger.

The song is about the collapse of the World Trade Center in New York and the conspiracy theories. Still hard to believe what happened that day! Very sad.

The following abstract is from the project report: 1976 Western spruce budworm control project Washington - Oregon. Forest Service, USDA. Pacific Northwest Region. www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/fsbdev2_026568.pdf

Abstract:

A total of 365,702 acres infested with western spruce budworm was treated in Oregon and Washington during 1976. Of this total, 7,663 were treated with Sevin 4 Oil at the rate of 1 pound (AI) in 1/2 gallon of formulated material per acre, and 358,039 acres were treated with ultra low volume Malathion at the rate of 13 ounces of technical grade material per acre.

A total of 23 helicopters and 2 fixed-wing aircraft was used in applying the insecticide. In addition, 13 helicopters and 1 fixed-wing aircraft were used for observation and general administration of the project. A total of 1,558 flying hours occurred during the project with no accidents or injuries.

Environmental monitoring of fish, aquatic organisms, birds and bees revealed no adverse effects of the treatment with the exception of a temporary reduction in aquatic organisms in streams which were directly treated with insecticide. Where one-swath buffer zones were left along streams, no significant differences in aquatic insect drift was noted.

Controller for a model helicopter. Wish I'd got the focus on the Walkera logo, but it's a difficult shot to get, over the shoulder of some one controlling a helicopter. :)

Anyway, thought I'd post a bit of colour after a few days of mono stuff.

Ladybird beetles are effective biological control agents when they feed on aphids. However, they can become a pest when entering homes in the fall.

Controlled Spring Burn, Thomas Co., GA. This type of burning is used throughout the South to maintain open pine forests with limited understory to facilitate hunting activities and limit the spread of disease and insect damage. This practise also reduces the risk of catastrophic damage due to wildfires. These beautiful open pine forrests are maintained through selective cutting and controlled Spring burning. This is in marked contrasts to the tree farms of the timber industry, which are vast mono-cultural biological deserts where the trees are planted in rows like any other crop. Here a fair level of diversity remains, providing habitat for many species including the Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake (Crotalus adamanteus).
