At the Winnipeg Fringe Fest beer gardens. Oddest acoustic diffusers ever (sharp bits of aluminium), built by a committee of executives and architects who liked the look of it - in a direct sneer to those who consulted over it. Tax dollars making suits wealthy.

A Freudian slip is when you say one thing and mean your mother.

In 1913, in memory of the eightieth anniversary of the election of Alphonse de Lamartine as deputy of Bergues, the town organised large celebrations, called the Lamartine Festivals. A new processional giant called L'électeur de Lamartine was inaugurated for the occasion. The giant, dressed in a frock coat, wearing a top hat and carrying a large umbrella known in the town as a "berguenard", looks like a 19th century bourgeois. Indeed, at the time of the poet's election, only the bourgeois could vote, by virtue of the system of censal suffrage reserving the right to vote to taxpayers paying a minimum amount of tax.

A great initiative these Bixi. But for a large North American city like Montreal, was it a good idea? And with a growing deficit, is that taxpayers are going to cover?

"May 17, 2011, the Montreal city council approved a rescue plan of the Company Bike service (PBSC), the company that operates the BIXI. The Bike service turns out a deficit in the Montreal area since its establishment in 2009 (the profits earned in 2010 only from the sale of the concept in foreign cities). Therefore the administration of Mayor Gérald Tremblay has made the one hand to lend $ 37 million in the PBSC and, secondly, to guarantee its loans up to $ 71 million."

Louis Bouchêne, known as Louis Baron, fils or just Baron fils (1870-1939), was an actor and singer, who performed in many operettas and comédie-musicales, and also in some 50 films between 1910 et 1938. He was the son of Louis Baron often associated with the works of Jacques Offenbach.

Baron, born 24 December 1870 in Paris, began studies at the Conservatoire in 1890 in the class of Got, winning a first prize for comedy in 1893, and being engaged at the Théâtre de l'Odéon, making his debut that year in Les Plaideurs. In 1894 he appeared in Fleur de Vertu at the Théâtre des Bouffes-Parisiens and the following year in several plays at the Théâtre des Folies-Dramatiques. His career continued over the next years at other Parisian theatres. Appearing in operettas before the First World War, including François les bas-bleus in 1896, he also performed in many comedies at the Théâtre du Vaudeville. Baron was mobilized in 1914–1916. After the war he appeared in comic and romantic plays such as Dédé (1921, Leroydet) - he would also appear in its filmic adaptation - J'adore ça (1925, Monseigneur Spaghetto), Le Temps d'aimer (1926) and Il est charmant (1932, Poitou).

Baron fils debuted in film at Pathé Frères in the early 1910s, acting in films directed by Michel Carré (Deux vieux garçons, 1910), Georges Denola (La ruse de Miss Plumcake, 1911, with Mistinguett), Joséphine vendue par ses sœurs (Denola, 1913), and Charles Prince (Le Contrôleur des wagons-lits, 1913), the latter an adaptation of a popular and often filmed play. Between 1917 and 1920 he had an intense film career in films by in particular Jacques Baroncelli ( Le Roi de la mer, 1917; Le Siège des trois K, 1918; Le Retour aux champs, 1918; L'Héritage, 1920). He was also reunited in two feature comedies by Prince and Georges Monca: Madame et son filleul (1919) and Les Femmes collantes (1920). He started again film acting from 1926, in three French comedies by Louis Mercanton, two with British silent star Betty Balfour, La petite bonne du palace (Louis Mercanton, 1927) and Croquette (1928), and one with American star Constance Talmadge, Vénus (1929).

In the early sound era Baron fils reduced his stage work and was extremely busy in French cinema, starting with L'Amour chante (Robert Florey, 1930). He had the lead in Nos maîtres les domestiques ( Hewitt Claypoole Grantham-Hayes, 1930), which was the French version of Our Masters, the Servants and was shot in the UK at the Twickenham studios. Baron's co-actors were Henri Garat, René Ferté, Georges Tréville and Madeleine Guitty. He then acted in Flagrant délit (Hanns Schwarz, Georges Tréville, 1931), the French version of Schwarz's film Einbrecher. After Le blanc et le noir (1931), Baron did various films at the Paris Paramount studios: Un Homme en habit (1931), Le Cordon bleu (1932), Il est charmant (1932), Monsieur Albert (1932), Passionnément (1932), and Le Fils improvisé (1932), often playing third lead. From 1933 Baron acted in comedies opposite Grazia del Rio, Tramel, Georges Milton, Henri Garat, Michel Simon, Armand Bernard, Victor Boucher, Albert Préjean, Robert Arnoux, Danielle Darieux, Frédéric Duvallès, and the duo Pills & Tabet. Baron's most regular director in the 1930s was René Guissart, with whom he worked on Un Homme en habit, Le Fils improvisé, Passionément, L'École des contribuables (1934), Dédé (1934), Bourrachon (1935), and Toi, c'est moi (1936). Other directors Baron worked with in the thirties were e.g. Léo Joannon, Sacha Guitry and Christian Jaque. Rarely, he acted in dramatic films. An exception is Pierre Billon's Courrier Sud (1937), based on the novel by Antoine de St. Exupéry, who also collaborated on the script. Baron played the father of the hero's love interest (Jany Holt), while Pierre Richard Willm played the protagonist, the pilot Jacques Bernis. Baron's last film was Trois artilleurs à l'opéra (André Chotin, 1938).

Louis Baron fils died in Dieppe in 30 November 1939.

Beautiful Nita Raya (1915-2015) was a French dancer, singer and actress. She was a lead dancer at the Folies-Bergère. For ten years, she was the companion of Maurice Chevalier.

Nita Raya was born Raïssa Beloff-Yerkovitch in 1915 in Chişinău, Moldovia – then known as Kishinev and part of the Russian Empire. She came from a Jewish Romanian family. Her father was Vladimir Beloff, who werked as a tailor and a taxi driver, and her mother Angelina or Anna Jerkovitch. In 1926 mother and daughter moved to France, where Nita attended dance courses by the celebrated Russian artist Olga Préobrajenska. She made her dance debut in the Parisian cabaret Le bal Tabarin, where she danced the Cancan at the side of Viviane Romance. An accident finished her dance career and she attended acting courses by René Simon. She made her first film appearance in the short comedy Olive se marie/Olive Marries (Maurice de Canonge, 1931). Three years later followed by the feature comedies Le Père Lampion/Father Lampion (Christian-Jaque, 1934) with Félicien Tramel, and L'École des contribuables/The School for Taxpayers (René Guissart, 1934) with Armand Bernard. On stage she was part of the first production of Marie Galante (1934) a musical written by Jacques Deval and Roger Fernay with music by Kurt Weill. The following year she had a small part in the historical film Lucrèce Borgia/Lucrezia Borgia (Abel Gance, 1935), starring Edwige Feuillère. She also had supporting parts in Sous la griffe/Under the claw (Christian-Jaque, 1935) with Constant Rémy, and Sacré Léonce/Holy Leonce (Christian-Jaque, 1936). The 19-years old Raya fell in love with the 46-years old Maurice Chevalier, who had just returned to Paris from his Hollywood adventure. Between 1935 and 1945, she was his companion. The following years she got bigger film parts. She had the female lead opposite singer Tino Rossi in Au son des guitars/The Sound of Guitars (Pierre-Jean Ducis, 1936). She also had bigger parts in the comedies Les Rois du sport/The Kings of Sport (Pierre Colombier, 1937) with Fernandel, Raimu and Jules Berry, and Ignace (Pierre Colombier, 1937), again with Fernandel. In the latter she sang the hit La Mexicana. The following year, she starred opposite Victor Boucher in the romantic comedy Chipée (Roger Goupillières, 1938). She also performed in Music Halls like Petit-Casino, Bobino, l’Européen, and l’ABC.

In 1939, Nita Raya appeared in the drama Entente cordiale/Cordial agreement (Marcel L'Herbier, 1939), starring Gaby Morlay, Victor Francen and Pierre Richard-Willm and based on a book by André Maurois. The film depicts the 1904 signing of the Entente Cordiale creating an alliance between Britain and France and ending their historic rivalry. It was made with an eye to its propaganda value, as the Second World War had broken out and Britain and France were allies fighting against Nazi Germany. After Bécassine (Pierre Caron, 1940) with Paulette Dubost, Raya would not be seen in the cinemas for more than 10 years. D.B. DuMonteil at IMDb: "Bécassine was one of the first European comic strips, although its author did not use the speech bubbles; it began to define what is known under the ‘clear line’ term, which spawned the whole Belgian school, of which Tintin is the most famous work. But the people are very divided on the character: a lot of people (particularly Bretons) have always thought that this bubble head servant was a way of laughing at Bretagne, which would have been behind the times. (…) When Becassine was transferred to the screen in 1940, there was an outcry in Bretagne: a real storm in a teacup, considering what was happening in France at the time.” During the war, the Jewish Raya and her companion Maurice Chevalier were hosted by Desha Delteil. Chevalier helped Raya to get false identity papers so she could escape deportation. After the war she appeared in operettas by the company of Francis Lopez. She returned briefly in the cinemas in the anthology film La rafle est pour ce soir/The raid is tonight (Maurice Dekobra, 1954) based on stories by Guy de Maupassant. It was her final film. She worked as the lead dancer in the revue at the famous Follies-Bergère. During the 1960s she often performed with Édith Piaf and wrote two songs for her, Je m’imagine and Toujours aimer. Nita Raya died in 2015 in a retirement home in Trégastel in Brittany. She was 99. For a time she was married to Joseph Akcelrod. She was survived by her son Patrick Akcelrod and his family.

I’m incredibly proud to work with Lisa Raitt, Alain Rayes, Candice Bergen, Mark Strahl, and Chris Warkentin. We are excited to share our positive Conservative vision, and look forward to working with all of our Members of Parliament and Senators to build a strong Conservative team and give a voice to families and taxpayers.

Anyhow paste kena fine [=anyhow, i'm gonna get fined if i paste]

Almost two months after the arrest of SKLO, known in Singapore as The Sticker Lady, some of her stickers remain, like this one, that i shot four days ago, near Dhoby Ghaut station.

For those who are not very familiar with Singapore's news, the Sticker Lady Case is somehow quite interesting and could reflect the contradictions in Singapore's process towards an open society. It's also a controversial topic, which, as a foreigner, i have to consider with a distance, since my westerner, quite liberal and art-educated culture is apparently different than the majority of the Lion-City, despite its increasing cosmopolitism.

Ok, here's the story about The Sticker Lady. Difficult to tell it in brief.

I don't know exactly when SKLO started to paste her stickers on the traffic lights buttons, but i started to notice them one year ago, mostly near my own neighborhood, in the relatively arty area of Bras Basah-City Hall. The average passerby, perhaps too busy, was not noticing them but some people were smiling or ranting when they paid attention to the messages pasted.

These messages had in common a use of the efficient local singlish and a certain sense of humor.

The first and most common one was pasted on the buttons for setting the green light for pedestrians, where lots of very impatient people tend to press many times, possibly hoping it would quicken the process : "press once can already", which could be translated by "to press once is enough". This was followed by a more clearly english one : "no need to press so many times".

Then there have been a lot of other messages on these stickers, like "press until shiok ["press until you feel good"], "press to time travel" (arguably the most imaginative one), "press to teleport", "press for money", then the one that will later trigger another series leading to SKLO's arrest : "press to cross my grandfather road" (a pun with the singlish expression "your grandfuder road, is it?", said when people behave as if the street belongs to them, which, well, technically is the case, right?).

Finally, the more recent and last stickers were about the risk of being caught, in a country where repression is still sometimes surprisingly tough, with this prophetic "anyhow press kena fine".

Indeed, graffitis (including obviously pasting stickers) are a serious offence in Singapore, where the concept of street art is still pretty much inexistant. That's when SKLO started a blog called "my grandfather road" and did start to do stencils with this slogan that the police caught her, tracking her ip address.

SKLO is not a gangster, nor a kid or an art student, she is a 28 years old arts executive, who was working as a curator for the upcoming national art gallery.

The Sticker Lady was arrested, sued by the Land & Transport Authority and charged with vandalism. But she did not simply get a fine. Actually, she faced almost 2 years in prison for having pasted some stickers on poles.

The charges against SKLO triggered a huge buzz in the medias and the internet forums. Basically, there were 3 sides : the pro-Sticker Lady vs the anti-Sticker Lady, and the 3rd side, with mostly embarrassed foreigners and diplomats who could not dare to take side, since it was a sensitive issue - some european and western embassies have been quite hesitant to risk a diplomatic crisis by commenting about the Singapore government rather harsh decision.

Basically, again, the pro-Sticker Lady were pointing out the fact that the girl was not a criminal, that she has wits and would have been considered as an artist and her works exhibited in galleries and museums if she was living in Europe. A lot of the pro-Sticker Lady launched internet campaigns to freed her and some spoofs for showing their support. On the other hand, the anti-Sticker Lady were saying that she was irresponsible and was wasting the taxpayers money (although it's doubtful that removing a few stickers could cost that much to the taxpayers money). Except at rare exceptions, though, almost everybody involved in these discussions agreed that sending her to jail was a bit harsh.

There have been smart points, but also amazingly stupid ones, like those pro-Sticker Lady awkwardly demeaning her work by trying to say she was just a kid having fun (er... she's a 28 years old art professional and she's got a message), or those anti-Sticker Lady saying that she was a shame for the country and a criminal (er... is humor a crime?). And there have been the conspiracy maniacs, pretending this case was set up by the government for testing the public reaction, and other doubtful assertions. And there also have been some copycats...

But what was at stake was rather the status of Singapore, officially yearning to become a more open and modern society, and suddenly getting entangled with what pretty much looks like an excess in authority.

Then, after so much fuss, the story got quieter and now, a few weeks after the case, the medias seem to have forgotten the Sticker Lady. Is she free now, or still on the way to be jailed?

Anyhow, some of her stickers remain, and the purpose of this photo is to inform about it.

Ok, voilà l'histoire de The Sticker Lady.

The Whitefish, Montana-based National Policy Institute (NPI), whose efforts include a campaign to make the Republican Party exclusively white, plans to hold their conference on Oct. 26th, 2013. Among its speakers will be retired Sam Dickson of the Council of Conservative Citizens and Tomislav Sunic, a former Croatian diplomat and longtime white supremacist who recently was listed as one of the instructors in the Soldiers of the Cross Training Institute, that took place Aug. 23-29th, 2013 in Harrison, AR and organized by Pastor Thom Robb's Ku Klux Klan Knights Party.

NPI, a politically-connected white supremacist organization whose leader is calling for the “European world” to adopt eugenics to prevent those like Trayvon Martin friend Rachel Jeantel from becoming humanity's future, plans to hold a conference for the second time at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade in Washington, DC.

NPI is listed as a hate group via the Southern Poverty Law Center. SPLC stated that "The institute has published two studies: a critique of affirmative action, which the institute opposes; and "Mass Deportation is a Viable Solution to America's Illegal Immigration Crisis," written by Edwin Rubenstein. Who happens to be affiliated with VDARE which is an anti-immigration hate organization "dedicated to preserving our historical unity as Americans into the 21st Century."

French postcard by EPC, no. 36. Photo: Studio Harcourt.

Hard at work with our Shadow Ministers - a great team that is working for Canadians in every corner of our country.

The Conservative Party of Canada - Parti conservateur du Canada caucus is the only one that will always stand up for Canadians and taxpayers. As Parliament resumes in a couple weeks, Justin Trudeau has a lot to answer for.

Today during #QP I asked repeatedly for Justin Trudeau to refund taxpayers for his illegal travel. He made his Heath Minister refund taxpayers for her improper expenses, so why won’t he?

Canada should be a country where no ambition is too big and where no dream is out of reach. We should be a principled force for peace and freedom on the world stage, a disciplined protector of tax dollars here at home, a welcoming land of refuge for the world’s persecuted and afflicted, a proud champion for clean Canadian technology, and a model of clear roles and responsibilities between levels of government.

I was proud to share my vision to build a stronger Canada in a turbulent world. Stay tuned for more speeches about My Vision for Canada in the coming weeks.

This week we found out that Justin Trudeau is spending an extra $41 billion of Canadians’ money to try to bury his corruption scandal. I talked about how my Conservative team and I are working to end his cover-up with Antony Robart on Global News Toronto.

Proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with my CPC colleagues every day to be the voice of the taxpayer, and hold Justin Trudeau accountable. Every day we are working develop policies that address the real challenges Canadians face, and that put people before government.

At our first formal meeting today, Gatineau Mayor Maxime Pedneaud-Jobin and I wrote to Prime Minister Stephen Harper to call for elected local representation on the National Capital Commission board.

At the NCC, closed discussions are being had about the future of our region, with no voice for property taxpayers at the table. In fact, the majority of NCC board members come from outside Ottawa and Gatineau.

Did you know that the City of Ottawa can’t even make changes to its own City Hall building without approval from the NCC? Or that the NCC felt the need to dictate the kinds of shrubs and plants along Ottawa’s LRT route?

We think it’s time for a change.
