Steve and Laura negotiated the final arrangements of the contract. It seems that all was in order because both signed without the need for lawyers to become involved.
Independent road safety report for work contracted by the Ministry of Transportation (MOT) in BC for the area of Emerald to Kewit Depot at river on HWY 99 on February 26, 2009 in Whistler BC Canada. Highway maintenance handled by Maindroads Howe Sound Contracting.
Use a Twoonie to measure the depths when you see one in some photos.
The maintenance is handled from day to day by Mainroads Howe Sound Contracting in conjunction with MOT.
It is the recommendation of the report as follows:
1. Fix Road Drop Offs on road as noted
2. Reduce speed of zone from Function to Bayshores to 60 kms / hr due to excessive speeding and substance abuse.
3. Re-pave the road lines. Missing road lines both white and yellow are extremely dangerous at Nordic entrance. No white line to mark edge of road found at over 50% overall of area.

8.5.15 Drop-offs - MOT Traffic Management Guidelines
The Proponent shall conduct all operations to minimize any drop-offs (abrupt changes in roadway elevation) left exposed to traffic during non-working hours. Unless otherwise
specified in the Traffic Control Plan, drop-offs left exposed to traffic during non-working hours shall be delineated as follows:
• Drop-offs up to 60 millimetres, unless otherwise specified on the Traffic Control Plan, may remain exposed with appropriate traffic control devices alerting
motorists of the condition. However, no drop-offs shall be allowed between adjacent lanes of traffic.
• Drop-offs more than 60 millimetres that are in the roadway or shoulder shall be delineated with appropriate traffic control devices and further delineated as
indicated in 3(c) below.
• Drop-offs more than 60 millimetres, but not more than 300 millimetres, that are not within the roadway or shoulder shall be delineated with appropriate traffic
control devices and further delineated by having one of the following:
a) A wedge of compacted stable material (25 mm well-graded crushed base course aggregate or better) placed at a slope of 4:1 or flatter.
b) Channelizing devices (Type 1 barricades, plastic safety drums, or other devices one meter or more in height) placed along the traffic side of the dropoff
and a new edge of pavement stripe placed a minimum of two (2) metres from the drop-off. Appropriate traffic control devices shall be placed in
advance of and throughout the drop-off treatment.
c) Temporary concrete barrier or other approved barrier installed on the traffic side of the drop-off with 300 millimetres between the drop-off and the back of
the barrier and a new edge of pavement stripe a minimum of 500 millimetres from the face of the barrier. An approved terminal, flare or impact attenuator
shall be required at the beginning of the section. For night use, the barrier shall have reflective markers and/or warning lights.

KWT were contracted to perform 5 days of LEQ improvements along Goitre Lane, Merthyr. The tree works were primarily to remove dangerous or overhanging trees from the path, but to also thin out sections of the wooded areas to allow more sunlight to reach the ground flora level. Parallel works taking place included soft fruit can and native bulb planting and fly tipping removal with Merthyr's KWT Officer Jake Castle, his local volunteers and Merthyr CBC's Tidy Town Team.
Much of the overhanging vegetation was on steep banking, so special care was taken while working on the bank, but also ensuring safety of path users by having signage and a banksman. The brash was stacked in appropriate areas and repeatedly chainsawed down to take up minimum space, while providing excellent habitat.
There was plenty of compliments for the work which was carried out over 5 days from passers by including by one of Jake's local volunteers next door neighbour.

I've officially been a tree farmer for a long time now...
Hah! I just noticed it said I planted 21 not 31 acres but they did do 31 of the 43....
They actually planted it twice because we had a drought the first year and they assumed the trees died but the first bunch really did well. There about 50 foot tall now once you get away from the road a ways and growing so close I can now thin them so there is a tree every 8 feet or so and those ones will get to branch out form a canopy and my private park is started and the trees they cut down will get sold and turned into paper. I might get enough to cover the cost of a second larger cabin with two bedrooms since the people moving into the cabin have a new born and will need more room in a year.
