After exploring White Pocket for a few hours in the middle of the day, I went back to the jeep for a rest and a bite to eat. In the meantime high cirrus clouds moved in, so when I went out photowalking again towards sunset the light was soft.

A typical part of the Dutch coastal landscape. A piece of old land that once has been conquered, but has been taken back by the sea.

In the background the contour of the mighty sea dike that protects the hinterland is visible.

Dead and decaying branch from a eucalyptus tree I dug up three years ago. I left it to encourage organisms, lichen, fungi, insects etc of all sorts to use it as a home.

Small back-lit red leaves in the Winter afternoon sun, shot with my old manual Vivitar 105 mm Series 1 Macro lens, which I like more and more. It's produces nicer bokeh than I ever dared imagine it could. So far I am very happy with it.

The Terschelling drowning house used to be a rescue operation for stranded skippers on the eastern part of the island. The castaways could then shelter in this house in bad weather. It was a very crucial place, as the sea around Terschelling could and can be very rough, so it was very common that there were shipwrecks in this area. The stranded sailors could spend the night in the house until the storm passed.

This photo was taken after a lonely and long walk on the Boschplaat in the evening. There are also tours to this place, but it doesn't do justice to the scenery when there are busloads of people wandering around. Going alone also had the advantage that there is more time to walk around and take more pictures from different angles.

The Mesquite Flat Dunes are located near Stovepipe Wells within Death Valley National Park. The low angle light at dawn creates long shadows to enhance the texture, ripples, curves and contours of the dunes.

Rolling hills of the farmland in the Palouse, in southeastern Washington state.

Since this photo was taken in late spring, only about half of the crop has started to grow, which explains some of the extremes in color. Had I arrived a couple of weeks later, this entire landscape would have been covered in varying shades of green.

This photo was taken from Steptoe Butte, an extinct volcano that rises about 2000 feet (600 m) above the surrounding terrain. It makes an excellent vantage point to see so much of this wonderful landscape.

On this trip, I was battling rain and overcast skies for most of the time. While I normally love photographing under overcast skies because of how it softens the light, I was really hoping for more sunny weather to bring out the contours of the rolling hills with stronger shadows. Maybe next trip.

Here is an example of what I tried to capture, although I wasn't as successful as this photo:

EDIT 20191006: I returned to the Palouse in June 2019, and the weather behaved nicely for me, permitting me to take a number of photos that I was pleased with. My album "The Palouse" showcases those photos.

I have some decorative pears sitting on a glass table top whose edge is pear contoured too.

B'dee, b'dee......that's about it.

MLC Centre architecture cannot be overlooked. With elegantly contoured, stark white concrete, white quartz and glass, the façade presents itself as a handsomely moulded sculpture.

Harry Seidler AC QBE is a luminary of Australian architecture. Widely considered as the first architect to fully express the Bauhaus aesthetic here. The MLC Centre remains one of his most definitive works on the Sydney Skyline.

244m to antenna and 227m to roof. The MLC Centre was Sydney’s tallest building in Sydney from 1977 to 1992. It is currently the fifth tallest building behind the Meriton World Tower (230m), Deutsche Bank Place (240m), Citigroup Centre (243m) and Chifley Tower (244m). The tallest structure in Sydney is still the Sydney Tower at 309m.

The patterns created from a retreating tide at Holywell Bay are amazing. Well worth a visit if you are in Cornwall.

“Once spiritual experience becomes objectified, it turns into an idol. It becomes a “thing,” a “reality” which we serve. We were not created for the service of any “thing,” but for the service of God alone, Who is not and cannot be a “thing.” To serve Him Who is no “object” is freedom…What matters is not what one feels, but what really takes place beyond the level of feeling or experience. In genuine contemplation, what takes place is a contact between the inmost reality of the created person and the Infinite Reality of God. The experience which accompanies this contact may be a more or less a faithful sign of what has taken place.”

- Thomas Merton from The Inner Experience pgs. 107-108

A very colorful sunrise in the center of Val d'Orcia near Podere Belvedere, a historic farmhouse atop a hill. The fog was present both as a dense sea at the foot of the hills and more sparsely everywhere in the sky above. The sunlight was thus diffuse and soft, with only the contours of hills, cypress trees and farmhouses visible through this golden halo.
