A Walk in the Woods (with a nod to Bill Bryson), can be very fruitful photographically. Not that we just stumbled upon this. This was part of our exploration of Jim Day's property near St. Andrews, NB.

It is said "context is everything". So without context, what do you see? A vertical rock face with deep fissures? Or perhaps, a close-up section of an old tree trunk?

 

It is, in fact, the latter.

I don't know if they have a building inspector in Quadeville, but that electrical wiring does not seem up to code to me, heh heh. It seems that someone has fallen onto hard times here.

 

So, what's special about Quadeville? Well, they do have a Pentecostal church, and a sign in the window of the chip 'n' poutine shop across the road from this place indicated that they are eager to save our souls.

 

There is also The Beryl Pit (Quadeville East Mine) owned by a company called Aquarose, where for a fee rock-hounds can look for and collect beryl. Collection permits may be purchased at Quadeville's MacEwen gas station where they will also give you directions to The Pit. - www.mindat.org/loc-6641.html

 

But, Quadeville's biggest claim to fame is that Al Capone's Canadian hideout is alleged to have been in the area. We did ask for directions, and tried to find it, to no avail, however. Richard David Bach (born June 23, 1936) is an American writer. Bach is widely known as the author of some hugely popular 1970s best-sellers, including Jonathan Livingston Seagull (1970) and Illusions: The Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah (1977). Bach has authored numerous works of fiction and non-fiction, including One: A Novel (1989) and Out of My Mind (1999).

 

Most of Bach's books have been semi-autobiographical, using actual or fictionalized events from his life to illustrate his philosophy. Bach's books espouse his philosophy that our apparent physical limits and mortality are merely appearance. Bach is noted for his love of aviation and for his books related to flying in a metaphorical context. Bach has pursued flying as a hobby since the age of 17. In late August 2012, Bach was badly injured when on approach to landing at Friday Harbor, Washington, his aircraft clipped some power lines and crashed upside down in a field. Source Wikipedia.

Here is a photograph of Gibbon Falls in Yellowstone within the surrounding mountains of that lovely caldera.

A Halloween decoration emanates an eerie feeling of omnipresence as it beckons me from the shelf of a discount store. Even in the context of a brightly lit retail environment, full of shoppers and just one aisle away from potato chips, the eyes radiate pure malevolence. In moments like this it all feels directed solely at me. It's almost as if only I can see these things as they truly are, rather than the cheap plastic skull that other shoppers see. My mind always seems to work in this two-track system: interpreting what I actually see versus how things make me feel. There's often a wide gulf separating the two. It's the simultaneous curse and blessing bestowed upon artists. I snapped the picture then hurried on with my shopping. But memories of this moment will linger.

Snow Lake, Mount Rainier National Park, Washington

  

Tucked away at the end of the trail from my previous post lies a sparkling jewel with the name of Snow Lake. (Not to be confused with the several other Snow Lakes in Washington, some of which I have also hiked!) Ringed by the rocky slopes of the Tatoosh Range, the colors shimmer and dance in the sunlight with shades of blue and green that make you want to rub your eyes and wonder if it's real. Enchanting, or perhaps enchanted, the magic draws you in. Into this world where all that exists is mountains, sky, and water, and all that speaks is the gentle ripple of lake against shore and the silent calm of steadfast peaks.

  

Note:

The bright sunlight that makes the colors of the lake so beautiful is also obviously not optimal for photography, and the sun was directly over the surrounding mountains while I was there. But if anyone would like some visual context of the lake basin with the mountains, here's a quick shot I grabbed with my phone - while crossing a slightly unstable log across the lake's outlet stream!

Downtown Charleston, South Carolina, USA

With the context that this Empire Builder detoured from Seattle to Spokane via Portland, they're doing pretty solid schedule wise into Havre at only about 3 hours down. The Milk River wanders north of the tracks through Havre and this was fun spot to see it.

 

This is taken from behind a run down strip mall on the hill in town and you'd never know this view was there from the highway.

Composing shots of the Natural Bridge at Bryce Canyon National Park can be challenging due to the limitations of the overlook itself. That is, your positions are so limited. Now, after two trips here, I'm finally happy with this one, getting a bit wider view with the bridge arch in its context.

Una noche limpia disfrutando de esta maravilla que el cielo nos ofrece en estas fechas, nuestro hogar dentro del Universo: La Vía Láctea..

El lugar se encuentra a caballo entre las provincias de Málaga y Granada, en el entorno protegido de Maro-Cerro Gordo.

No pasan las horas cuando las noches y el lugar acompañan.

Mi objetivo es conseguir el máximo detalle en toda la imagen, con el menor ruido posible y con una buena reproducción de color, en el contexto nocturno, que siempre supone grandes restricciones luminosas y cromáticas, sobre todo en el cielo..

E' un mio quadro.

« En imaginant des œuvres pour des murs dans la ville je cherche toujours une image marquante. Je voudrais que mes oeuvres en ville soit comme une fenêtre sur un nouvel imaginaire. La surprise, parfois le choc que les peintures suscitent sont peut-être l’effet du courant d’air lorsque deux milieux contrastés se rencontrent ? Aussi je vais présenter un peu plus le contexte de la création de cette image.

L’imaginaire dans lequel évolue le dinosaure transparent est celui de l’enfance. La première fois que j’ai peint un ptérodactyl sur mes carnets et dans la ville c’était à la naissance de ma fille il y a 6 ans ( rue de Flandre dans sa version rouge). Ce personnage est repris d’une BD de Tardi « Adèle et la bête » dans lequel un oeuf de dinosaure éclos dans le muséum de Paris et se déplace alors sur les toits la ville. En fiction il est très fréquent de faire ressurgir les dinosaures. Ils nous ramènent un autre temps, une autre échelle.

Chaque nouvelle naissance est un peu comme un dinosaure qui nous revient. D’où vient cet être ? D’où revient-il ? Le corps d’un nouveau-né est petit mais son arrivée et son existence est gigantesque. Le ptérodactyle devint pour moi la nouvelle figure de la cigogne qui amène les enfants au monde.

Les enfants d’aujourd’hui sont-ils portés par des titans là où nous ne sommes que des hommes et des femmes ? Chaque être n’est-il pas dès sa naissance prévenu et préparé à l’époque qu’il vivra ?

« … Ils auraient pu devenir volaille comme nous, mais ils sont avant tout des fils de la chimère… ». Dira Jean Richepin dans son poème Les Oiseaux de Passage.

Aujourd’hui le ptérodactyle est devenu transparent. C’est une forme de passivité.

En plusieurs aspect ce personnage rappelle l’action d’un fantôme mais il diffère en cela qu’il n’est pas un esprit intranquille restant sur terre pour nous hanter. C’est au contraire un esprit bienveillant qui nous revient. Il véhicule plutôt la progression que la stagnation.

Ce ptérodactyle demande avant tout à être vu.

Il y a de grands mouvements et nous sommes des observateurs. Notre action réside peut-être dans cette observation ?

Il est souriant et confiant. Il traverse la ville de long en large toutes les nuits depuis l’heure du couvre-feu jusqu’au lever du soleil. L’oiseau survole chaque foyer, chaque intimité pour se rendre visible. C’est une invitation à être observateurs et à voir à travers. Une invitation à voir autrement.

Il n’y a pas trop à dire, il n’y a pas trop à faire. L’oiseau pourrait dire : « Soyez-vous aussi transparent comme moi » .

The Mills (南豐紗廠), formerly known as Nang Fung Cotton Mills, located at No. 45 Pak Tin Par Street, Chai Wan Kok, Tsuen Wan, Hong Kong, was founded in 1954 by Chen Din Hwa, known as the "King of Cotton Yarn", founder of Nan Fung Group. The total floor area is 24,500 square meters, making it the highest producing textile factory in Hong Kong at the time. Subsequently, Unit 1 to Unit 3 were dismantled after the filming of the fire scene in the 1997 Hong Kong film Lifeline and became the private residential estate Summit Terrace, while Unit 4 to Unit 6 ceased operation in 2008 and were converted into warehouses.

 

In 2014, Nan Fung Cotton Mills began revitalization works, and after completion of the project on December 6, 2018, it opened with spaces for work, a textile cultural and arts center, retail areas, and recreational spaces.

 

It has received the Award of New Design in Heritage Contexts of The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards for Culture Heritage Conservation.

AVANT LE PONT WILSON :

À son emplacement sur le Rhône existait depuis 1839 un pont suspendu appelé pont ou passerelle de l’Hôtel-Dieu. Au début du XX° siècle, il est vétuste et inadapté : son remplacement est décidé. Un pont provisoire construit en amont est ouvert le 1er avril 1912 et la passerelle est démolie.

La première pierre du "nouveau pont de l’Hôtel-Dieu" est posée le 16 octobre 1912. La construction d’un majestueux pont en pierre de 20 m de large débute, mais la Guerre ralentit les travaux. Et dans le contexte de cette guerre devenue mondiale avec le renfort des américains, le 24 juin 1918, le conseil municipal de Lyon décide de donner au nouveau pont de l’Hôtel-Dieu le nom du président américain Wilson.

BEFORE WILSON BRIDGE:

At its location on the Rhone existed since 1839 a suspension bridge called bridge or bridge of the Hotel-Dieu. At the beginning of the 20th century, it is obsolete and unsuitable: its replacement is decided. A temporary bridge built upstream is opened on April 1, 1912 and the bridge is demolished.

The first stone of the 'new bridge of the Hôtel-Dieu' was laid on October 16, 1912. The construction of a majestic stone bridge of 20 m wide began, but the War slowed the work. And in the context of this war became global with the reinforcement of the Americans, June 24, 1918, the Lyon City Council decides to give the new bridge of the Hotel-Dieu the name of the American president Wilson. The solemn inauguration is scheduled for the following 14th of July.

This is the fifth week of Lent. Our Gospel reading is a the story of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead. It is a drama happening in the context of a global drama-the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. These two events are intimately linked to each other. Both dramas show us how God moves within Salvation history that is on behalf of all humanity and then how Jesus works within the drama and detail of each and every life. Love for us, is God’s purpose and is reflected in both events.

 

We have the benefit of witnessing the unfolding of these two events and there importance to us collectively and individually-especially during Lent. We must not forget how fortunate we are to be on this side of the resurrection, because we have the complete picture, there are no surprises accept the ones we experience in the details of our own lives.

 

Our church provides us a way of entering into these events through her liturgies, liturgical seasons and sacramental rites. In this way, Jesus Christ is present to us in a multiple of ways. However, we can also let the glittery world distract us, and pull our attention from the “one thing that matters” our relationship with Christ. For it is in the intimacy of this relationship that we can experience Him in the details of our own lives, as he was present for Lazarus, Mary and Martha in our Gospel story.

 

How was Jesus present to them? Let us begin with “and Jesus wept.” For whom is Jesus shedding tears? The simple answer is for his friends. In these few words, we can be sure, that just as Jesus is moved by Martha and Mary in their grief and sorrow at the loss of their brother, so our Jesus is present to us. In the mundane, the joyful and the sorrowful details of our life…the presence of Christ can be felt if we have a place for Him.

 

How was Jesus there for Lazarus? From our Gospel reading, it was apparent that Jesus knew that Lazarus was sick, and it appears that he was slow to respond. For a greater purpose that only Jesus knew, he was going to raise him from the dead, as a foreshadowing of his own death.

When Jesus appeared before Lazarus, he asked that the stone be rolled away and then said

“Lazarus, come out!” What did Lazarus hear in this command? Artist and theologian Makoto Fujimura in his book Art and Faith say’s it quite beautifully:

 

“What Lazarus heard was not the voice of a mere mortal trying to speak of love and hope. What called Lazarus was the voice of a Son of God himself who spoke from beyond the veil into eternity, into the Father’s presence. What Lazarus heard was the voice of true hope and true love. What Lazarus heard was nothing short of the voice of Creation.” (end quote)

 

Once again, Lazarus, Martha and Mary are together again and Jesus is in the center. Their individual drama is completed and Jesus passion is just beginning. Soon after raising Lazarus,

The Sanhedrin met, and decided that they were going to kill Jesus.

 

So, we see, the unfolding of the Lazarus event, within the larger event we call the passion. As it was for Lazarus, Martha and Mary, Jesus works within the details of our lives and collectively we are the body of Christ moving forward in time. What harm can the world do to us, nothing…because we are a resurrection people.

 

In the detail of our lives, Jesus is present to us, even when we do not realize it. Blessed are we, if we are aware of his presence. Knowing that HE is with us in our ups and downs, giving us the peace and comfort that the world can never provide. What is even more profound is when we see HIM in others that crowd around us in our times of loss, despair, joy and celebration. In a mysterious way, our journey through this valley of life uniquely contributes to the bigger picture of our salvation history and building up the Kingdom of God on earth. The season of Lent, amplifies this walk with Jesus. We are given the opportunity to walk with Him…to be with him…to comfort HIM…to weep with HIM and to be his friend.

And here's a wider context view of much of the headland. Lower right provides a view of the generally hexagonal form of the columns; a pattern repeated the world over (eg Ireland's Giant's Causeway) where similar lavas have had the right conditions in which to cool and solidify.

The sight of a Moorhen is something that surprised me when I visited Bempton during the summer. It is one of those bird species that I would never have expected to come across at the cliff top sea bird paradise.
