the old Russian consulate in Changchun

In Amsterdam, an estimated 17,000 people took part in a demonstration to show their support for the victims of the Charlie Hebdo shooting in Paris.

On Dam Square they listened to prime minister Mark Rutte and mayor Eberhard van der Laan, among others. Many people were carrying pencils or pens and banners stating ‘Je suis Charlie’. The march, from the French consulate to the Dam, was led by police officers, politicians and journalists.

On November 18th, we celebrated the 90th Anniversary of the Charles’ Mitchell mansion, also known as the Consulate general of France's building.

934 Fifth Avenue is probably the best-known address for French New Yorkers. For 50 years, it has been the home of the French Consulate.

Since 1926, the 934 Residence has always been perceived as a flagship for elegance. Charles Mitchell, his first owner, the millionaire president of National City Bank, succeed in making his mansion “a show place of this fashionable neighborhood”, as the New York Times wrote in 1942.

On March 25, 1942, The French Consulate, which had outgrown the space it had been renting since 1933 at 610 Fifth Avenue, in the prestigious Rockefeller Center, purchased a building twenty-five blocks to the north, facing Central Park. The address: 934 Fifth Avenue.

This very beautiful mansion, built in 1926 by the architects Alexander Walker and Leon Gillette for financier Charles Mitchell, had been “taken over” by J.P. Morgan & Co in 1939 after the bankruptcy of its owner.

The consulate of Sri Lanka opened in Chengdu, capital of southwest China's Sichuan Province, on Tuesday.

"Chengdu is the hub of western China," said Karunatilaka Amunugama, the Sri Lanka Ambassador to China. "Opening consulate here is important to deepen cooperation between Sri Lanka and the western areas of China."

Sichuan saw a rise of trade with Sri Lanka over the years. In 2008, export of Sichuan to Sri Lanka hit 14.27 million U.S. dollars. The exported goods included television, textile, engine and parts of automobile, while Sichuan bought minerals and steel from Sri Lanka.

Covering 65,610 square kilometers with its population of 19.9 million, Sri Lanka is famous for its precious stones and tea.

After Shanghai and Guangzhou, Sichuan has the third most foreign consulates in China, including the consulates of United States, Germany, France, Thailand, South Korea, Singapore, Pakistan, Philippines and Sri Lanka.

Back in July, & Rich Beaubien asked me if I wanted to take a trip to NYC to shoot photos of the city. He explained this outing would be a little different from his previous trips where we would be shooting photos "After Dark" from 11pm-7am. To me this was a once in a lifetime opportunity and I am happy I did it.

On Saturday, August 28th, Rich Beaubien, John Tammaro and myself started our trek to NYC on 7pm bus out of South Station and arrived in NYC around 11:30pm. Our walk took us all over NYC from Times Square to Bryant Park and ending with the Brooklyn Bridge. After 7 hours of shooting, we hopped on a 6:50am bus back to Boston.

Surprisingly, I was awake the whole time and if asked to do it again...I would do it in a heartbeat.

Thanks to Rich Beaubien for asking me to join him on this photo adventure.
