USS Constitution is a wooden-hulled, three-masted heavy frigate of the United States Navy. Named by President George Washington after the Constitution of the United States of America, she is the world's oldest floating commissioned naval vessel.
Launched in 1797, Constitution was one of six original frigates authorized for construction by the Naval Act of 1794 and the third constructed. Joshua Humphreys designed the frigates to be the young Navy's capital ships, and so Constitution and her sisters were larger and more heavily armed and built than standard frigates of the period. Built in Boston, Massachusetts at Edmund Hartt's shipyard, her first duties with the newly formed United States Navy were to provide protection for American merchant shipping during the Quasi-War with France and to defeat the Barbary pirates in the First Barbary War. - Wikipedia

The hill was formerly the site of a fort which was later used as a prison. The Old Fort Prison complex is known as Number Four. The original prison was built to house white male prisoners in 1892. The Old Fort was built around this prison by Paul Kruger from 1896 to 1899 to protect the South African Republic from the threat of British invasion. Later, Boer military leaders of the Anglo-Boer War were imprisoned here by the British. The Old Fort prison was later extended to include "native" cells, called Section 4 and Section 5, and, in 1907, a women's section was added. An awaiting-trial block was constructed in the 1920s. Both political activists opposed to apartheid and common criminals were held at the prison. Mahatma Gandhi was imprisoned here in 1906, and striking white mineworkers in 1907, 1913 and 1922.
Under the apartheid government, only whites were held in the Old Fort itself, except for Nelson Mandela, who was given a bed in the hospital section when he was as an awaiting-trial prisoner in 1962 prior to the Rivonia Trial. Joe Slovo, Bram Fischer, Albert Luthuli and Robert Sobukwe were also inmates.
Located on the parliamentary axis (Constitution Place through Old Parliament House to Magna Carta Place), this artwork celebrates the centenary of Australian women’s suffrage. With the passage of the Commonwealth Franchise Act in 1902, women were able to vote and stand for parliament for the first time — which they did in the election of 1903.
The artwork comprises a fountain and timeline, both of which feature a glass mosaic inspired by wisteria in the women’s movement colours of green, purple and white. The timeline records the milestones and significant achievements of women in Federal Parliament…”
The fountain is made purely with smalti and was designed by Andrew Smith and Kate Riley, both of whom work at the Old Parliament House. The floor and walls of the water feature are lined with tens of thousands of glass mosaic tiles individually placed by mosaic artist Mary Stuart..

I think this is the fourth time I've made a model of this ship in various scales, somehow manage to fit more detail on it every time!

This is Constance, the Constitution Cow. She was a member of CowParade Harrisburg 2004 a public art exhibition of fiberglass cows transformed by artists into pieces of art. Constance was hand painted with the lettering, signatures and text of the U.S. Constitution by Philadelphia artist Mari Hoggs. In 2004 she moved to Philadelphia and found her place in the National Constitution Center where I found her on our visit on 08APR2007. (BTW this concludes that Easter trip 2007. Thank you for all your comments, invites and faves).

The USS Constitution, compassionately known as “Old Ironsides,” is a ship constructed in 1794 as the beginnings of the new U.S. Navy. Far from simply being a great American icon, she represented a new path of shipbuilding. She was one of six frigates designed to be more heavily armed and armored than other ships of her size, while still being fast enough to evade enemy men-o-wars.
Her design proved effective and after winning the first victory against the British Navy in the War of 1812, the USS Constitution was kept from the scrapyard. Now, she is the oldest ship still afloat—even sailing under her own sails and performing salutes for special occasions.
