Royal Pump Room, 1842.

By Isaac Thomas Shutt (1818-1879).

Grade ll* listed.

Dr. Edmund Deane first drew the attention of the world to the strongest sulphur spring in Great Britain when he published his 'Spadacrene Anglica' in 1626. This Royal Pump Room was built in in 1841-2 as the first act of the Harrogate Improvement Commissioners to a design by Isaac Thomas Shutt of the Swan Hotel at a cost of £2,249 0s 7d. Betty Lupton, 'The Queen of the Wells' dispensed the waters for decades until her death in 1843 at the age of 83. Public right of access to the spring is recognized by the Stray Award of 1778 and the Harrogate Act of 1841, which required the provision of an exterior public pump. The annexe was designed by Leonard Clarke and opened in 1913 by the Lord Mayor of London. The Harrogate Museum was established here in 1953, the historic sulphur spring still being open for use.

The Harrogate Improvement Act in 1841 enabled the election of commissioners to govern and effect improvements in the town. The commissioners appointed Isaac Shutt to design the Royal Pump Room to replace the covered well head and provide enhanced accommodation for the rich and fashionable who came to take the cure at the old sulphur well.

Why would someone want to immortalize *that* face in permanent sculpture?

Individuals and children are susceptible to constipation due to poor appetite, low-fiber diet, and insufficient fluid intake or as a side-effect of medication. It is the offshoot of some special medical conditions like Down syndrome, mental retardation, spina bifida and cerebral palsy, too.

The cause of piles is based on one factor i.e. increased intra abdominal pressure. The effect of increased intra abdominal pressure do increases the pressure effect in the anal vein situated at the rectum and anal region. Thus the abdominal pressure increases in the following conditions.

Constipation :- if there is constipation you will put more strain while passing stool and that will indirectly increase the intra abdominal pressure and affect upon the rectal venous pressure

Hard stool- if you have hard stool due to lack of taking fibers rich diet then it will make you to give more strain during stool and cause piles.

Chronic hyperacidity and flatulency - condition also increases the intra abdominal pressure and causes pile

Prolonged sitting for hours together- if you are in a job where you have to sit for hours together like those who working in IT sector or corporate sector also contribute the chance of increasing intra abdominal pressure due to pressure build up by sitting long time in a seat. So ultimately develop piles.

Lacks of physical activities- Lack of physical activities affect the smooth rhythmical peristaltic bowel movement thus contribute a factor for developing constipation and piles.

Obesity- The gaining weight or obesity also plays a role for developing piles by increasing pressure in anal venous areas.

Pregnancy- The pregnancy also contributes a factor of increasing intra abdominal pressure and developing piles.

Chronic diarrhea- It is also have the chance of developing piles,

Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a common digestive disorder that can cause a range of uncomfortable symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea, and constipation. While there is no cure for IBS, there are several strategies you can use to manage and improve your symptoms. Here are some tips:

1. Adjust your diet: Certain foods can trigger IBS symptoms, so it's important to identify and avoid trigger foods. Common trigger foods include dairy, caffeine, alcohol, fatty foods, and high-fiber foods. You may also consider following a low FODMAP diet, which eliminates certain types of carbohydrates that can trigger IBS symptoms.

2. Stay hydrated: Drinking plenty of water can help prevent constipation and improve overall bowel function.

3. Manage stress: Stress and anxiety can worsen IBS symptoms, so it's important to manage your stress levels. Some effective stress-reducing techniques include meditation, deep breathing exercises, and yoga.

4. Exercise regularly: Regular physical activity can help improve bowel function and reduce stress. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise, such as walking, swimming, or cycling, most days of the week.

5. Consider probiotics: Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that can help improve gut health and reduce IBS symptoms. Talk to your doctor about whether a probiotic supplement may be right for you.

6. Get enough sleep: Sleep deprivation can worsen IBS symptoms, so make sure to get enough sleep each night. Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep per night.

7. Seek medical advice: If your symptoms are severe or do not improve with lifestyle changes, consult with your best gastro doctor. They may prescribe medication or recommend additional treatments to manage your IBS.

Note: It's important to remember that what works for one person with IBS may not work for another. If you're in Amritsar then visit Amandeep Hospital.
