Dried leaves and stems were made into a tea or mixed with niu (coconut) and eaten by early Hawaiians.
Medicinally, pāʻūohiʻiaka was used to treat babies with thrush (ʻea), as a laxative for lepo paʻa (constipation), and for babies with general weakness (pāʻaoʻao). It also was used to help babies and adults with ʻeha makaʻu (frightening pains or aches). The plant was mixed with kalo (taro) leaves and salt for cuts.
Etymology
The generic name Jacquemontia is named in behalf of Victor Jacquemont (1801-1832), a French geologist and botanical explorer.
The specific epithet sandwicensis refers to the "Sandwich Islands," as the Hawaiian Islands were once called, and named by James Cook on one of his voyages in the 1770s. James Cook named the islands after John Montagu (The fourth Earl of Sandwich) for supporting Cook's voyages.

The early Hawaiians used an adhesive gum from pāpala kēpau for repairing bowls.
The milky sap from pāpala kēpau (Pisonia spp.) was used for cuts. The cooked leaves were used to cure pāʻaoʻao (childhood disease with physical weakening) and for lepo paʻa (constipation).
Pāpala kēpau are truly fascinating plants with a sad, but interesting, cultural history. A sinistral use for the sticky fruit was to trap native birds. The captured victims provided feathers for the strikingly colorful cloaks (capes), helmets, lei, images and kāhili. Birds such as 'ō'ō and mamo were plucked of their few moulting yellow feathers and set free to grow more for the next season. However, this was not the case with the 'i'iwi and 'apapane which were covered with red- or green-colored feathers and would not have survived the plucking. They were captured, plucked and eaten.

The generic name Pisonia is named for William Piso (ca. 1611-1678), Dutch physician, pharmacist, botanist, and early writer on medicinal plants of Brazil.
The specific epithet umbellifera is from the Latin umbelliferum, umbel-bearing or shade carrying, from umbrella (altered from umbell), Latin for parasol, and named for the large leaves of this species.

Ambient was a ceiling light above.
Two light setup:
430EX ii at 1/8 power fired into 24" softbox from 3' away and about 4' high. 2nd flash for hair light was set at 1/4 power and shot into bounce umbrella. It was turned perpendicular to my body so that the light didn't hit my face but only my hair to give me a separation from the black background.

My motivation for this shot was the cover of this month's Professional Photographer magazine. I didn't crop in as much or use as shallow a depth of field as they did but I'm still happy with the shot. I like how the focus stops at my chin and it starts to get blurry from there back. Pretty amazed that worked as I planned. And it also shows I'm learning! I remember stating a while back that I didn't see the point in self portraits and how blah, blah, blah about them. Well, I can now say I was clearly wrong. These are really helping me to study light and learn about depth of field. So bravo to me.
Named disagreement because to me, my expression looks like there is more going on inside than on the surface. So call it that or constipation. Either works for me...
I originally wanted this to be a black and white and that is why I used this as my main shot, but I am always drawn to color over the black and white so I put the color in as my alternate.

Teddy is 15 years old and he was returned to the shelter because his mom is terminally ill. Very sad. He has 2 major health issues -- he had a specialized surgery at some point in his past - a perianeal urethrostomy - because he was having urinary blockages. In very basic terms, his penis was removed and he was given a new hole to pee out of. He also has issues with megacolon, which basically means he can have problems with constipation. He was moved to special needs 1 because of his dietary issues. He has to be on a urinary diet and we have to make sure he is eating a better quality of diet.

Teddy was losing weight incredibly fast...and we all really thought he had sunk into a deep depression about the loss of his home and mother. On Monday night, I was so concerned about him, he was not moving, not having anything to do with me...and usually he is a lovebug. Here is the email from Susan this morning (8-26-09)
"I took Teddy to work for an exam today and a chest x-ray. Didn't need an exam -- the x-ray said it all. I really expected to find an enlarged heart with the cough he had, sounded just like heart patients sound, plus he only just started it. Well, I have NEVER ever seen a chest x-ray that looked as bad as his--he had so much cancer in his chest and it looked like it went back into his abdomen. It is amazing he did as well as he did and that he was able to breathe at all anymore. My guess is that the stress of coming into the shelter made the cancer spread. He is now with his mom in heaven. He purred so much this morning, even when he was getting the injection. He knew I was helping him. Such a very sweet soul. And, of course, you all know that he went out with lots of hugs and kisses."
Teddy, your spirt has flown from the body that was imprisoning you. I know that you have found your mama...what a joyous day up there! Please tell Chelsea to stop chasiing the boys and tell Miss Catfish to chill! heeheee.

The chicory is a perennial plant with thin stems, tender, branched basal rosette of leaves elongated, irregularly notched 0.3-1 m high, with azure-blue flowers.
It utilizes the roots and aerial part of the plant.
The chicory grows in pastures and meadows, roadsides, railways and ditches, crop, cultivated in places in the plains until the mountains.
The aerial part is harvested in the first part of flowering.
The roots must be removed spade.
Chicory stimulates the liver and gallbladder removal secretion that dissolves; is a bitter tonic, laxative easy (especially root), cleansing, promotes liver function and soothes thirst glicogenetica characteristic of diabetes.
Chicory therapy is recommended in case of biliary dyskinesia, in biliary diseases, anorexia, constipation (caused by liver disease), furunculosis , acne, diabetes.
For biliary dyskinesia plant uses the following combination: horehound - two parts, chicory root - two parts iris rhizomes - one side dandelion root - two parts.
Prepare a decoction (10 min.) Of a teaspoon of mixture of chicory in a cup of water, drink two cups a day.

Impatiens balsamina (garden balsam, garden jewelweed, rose balsam, spotted snapweed, touch-me-not) is a species of Impatiens native to southern Asia in India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Myanmar.
It is an annual plant growing to 20–75 cm tall, with a thick, but soft stem. The leaves are spirally-arranged, 2.5–9 cm long and 1–2.5 cm broad, with a deeply toothed margin. The flowers are pink, red, mauve, lilac, or white, and 2.5–5 cm diameter; they are pollinated by bees and other insects, and also by nectar-feeding birds. The ripe seed capsules undergo explosive dehiscence.
Human use:
Different parts of the plant are used as traditional remedies for disease and skin afflictions. Juice from the leaves is used to treat warts and snakebite, and the flower is applied to burns. This species has been used as indigenous traditional medicine in Asia for rheumatism, fractures, and other ailments. In Korean folk medicine, this impatiens species is used as a medicine called bongseonhwa dae (봉선화대) for the treatment of constipation and gastritis. Chinese people used the plant to treat those bitten by snakes or who ingested poisonous fish. Juice from the stalk, pulverised dried stalks, and pastes from the flowers were also used to treat a variety of ailments. Vietnamese wash their hair with an extract of the plant to stimulate hair growth. One in vitro study found extracts of this impatiens species, especially of the seed pod, to be active against antibiotic-resistant strains of Helicobacter pylori. It is also an inhibitor of 5α-reductases, enzymes that reduce testosterone levels.
In Korea, the flowers are used to produce an orange nail varnish.
Chemistry:
The naphthoquinones lawsone, or hennotannic acid, and lawsone methyl ether and methylene-3,3'-bilawsone are some of the active compounds in I. balsamina leaves. It also contains kaempferol and several derivatives. Baccharane glycosides have been found in Chinese herbal remedies made from the seeds.
Ecology:
It is widely cultivated as an ornamental plant, and has become naturalised and invasive on several Pacific Ocean islands.
Names and etymology:
Common names in other languages include mírame lindo in Spanish, fèngxiānhuā (鳳仙花) in Mandarin Chinese, bóng nước or phượng tiên hoa (鳳仙花) in Vietnamese, bongseonhwa (봉선화; 鳳仙花) in Korean, hōsenka (鳳仙花) in Japanese, "dopati" (দোপাটি) in Bengali, elepe in Hawaiian, Koodalu in Sinhalese séfēr in Jibbali and kamantigi in Chamorro and Filipino.

Seth works for Yahoo and is a member of their triathlon team. Why they decided to go with purple for their jerseys is beyond me, but it at least gave us all something to laugh about at such an early hour of the morning.

Edson Timothy Mphande is a patient at St Theresa's mission hospital in Ibenga. After falling ill in November 2011 with stomach swelling and constipation, he went to his local government hospital. Unfortunately his appointment was cancelled, not once but 3 times. Eventually he was told that there were too many patients, and his name had been cut from the list. Following an emergency appointment, his doctor advised him to go to St Theresa’s, which is supported by Christian Aid partner CHAZ.
“The problem is there are too many people and too few hospitals” says Edson. “In other hospitals, doctors don’t have 30 minutes to examine you. But here they do… I’ve loved the service here”.
