Pelvic floor repair surgery is the most common surgery for pelvic organ prolapse. Pelvic floor repair is a broad term used to classify a variety of simple, surgical procedures for repairing the pelvic floor. The three surgeries for pelvic floor prolapse include anterior repair, posterior repair, and a hysterectomy.
Although Restore Your Core does not provide any surgical treatment for pelvic floor issues, my hope is that this article may answer any questions you may have regarding pelvic floor repair and the various procedures and treatments involved in getting you back to a healthy, active lifestyle.
What are the Symptoms of Pelvic Organ Prolapse?
Prolapse can affect several abdominal organs. These organs are said to prolapse if they descend into or out of the vaginal canal or anus. The medical terminology for these occurrences include:
Cystocele: prolapse of the bladder into the vagina, the most common condition
Urethrocele: prolapse of the urethra (the tube that carries urine)
Uterine prolapse
Vaginal vault prolapse: prolapse of the vagina
Enterocele: Small bowel prolapse
Rectocele: Rectum prolapse
What Causes Pelvic Organ Prolapse?
There are many factors that are thought to cause a prolapse. In most cases, anything that may apply or put increased pressure in the abdomen can lead to a pelvic organ prolapse. Some of the common causes may include:
Pregnancy, labor, and childbirth are the most common causes
Obesity
Connective tissue disorders
Respiratory problems with a chronic, long-term cough
Constipation
Genetic factors
Pelvic organ cancers
Surgical removal of the uterus (hysterectomy)
Diastasis recti (weakened core, connective tissues)
Symptoms
The symptoms of a prolapse somewhat depend on which organ has descended. If you are suffering from a bladder prolapse, urinary incontinence may occur. If it is a rectal prolapse, constipation, painful bowel movements, and painful sex often occur. Lower back pain, painful sex, and bowel obstruction or incontinence tend to accompany a small intestine prolapse as well. If you are suffering from a prolapse of the uterus, you may also suffer from uncomfortable intercourse, incontinence, and lower back pain.
In some cases, there may never be signs of a prolapse or the presence of any painful symptoms. However, in others some women report symptoms ranging from:
Pressure or sense of fullness in the pelvic area
Lower back pain
Painful sex
Sensation of something falling out of the vagina
Urinary incontinence or frequent urination
Constipation
Spotting or bleeding from the vagina
In cases where there may be a severe prolapse, POP symptoms may worsen. One may notice:
Bulging of the vaginal region
Needing manual assistance during a bowel movement
Difficulty urinating, spraying stream of urine
The need to lift the bulging vagina in order to urinate
Urinary leakage during intercourse
Recurrent UTIs or kidney infections
How long does a pelvic floor repair operation take?
The length of the surgical procedure can vary greatly from patient to patient. The general estimate for the surgery ranges from around 3-5 hours, but may have a shorter or longer duration depending on various factors. Some of the elements that may determine the length of the operation can include:
Internal anatomy
Shape of the pelvis
Weight
Internal scarring or inflammation
Prior abdominal/pelvic floor surgery
Does Surgery Really Work?
Surgery to fix a uterine prolapse are usually successful. In most patients the surgeries for POP have been reported to have an 80% – 95% success rate.
The success rate for sacrospinous ligament fixation (surgery to correct the bulging of the vagina) ranges between 80% – 90%, for uterosacral ligament suspension (surgery restoring support to the top of the vagina) is also 80%-90% successful, and sacrocolpopexy (surgery fixing the vaginal vault and the cervix) and sacrohysteropexy (fixing the prolapse of the uterus) have also shown the same success rate.
However, even after prolapse surgery, there is still a chance that another part of the vagina or uterus may prolapse.
What Can I Expect After POP Surgery?
These are the general guidelines that doctors will usually give post POP OP (this is not medical advice): Each day in recovery you can expect to begin to feel stronger. During your recovery, you may need to remain on pain medication for about a week or two and may experience fatigue and weakness. A typical recovery time line varies from 4 to 6 weeks until you recover from an open surgery and anywhere from 1 to 2 weeks to recover from vaginal surgery. Your doctor should give you more specific guidelines.
During your recovery period, you should avoid any sexual activity, vigorous exercise, heavy lifting, or any activities that may put pressure or strain your operation area. Your doctor should give you more specific guidelines. The most important aspect to your quick recovery is rest – getting enough sleep will help you recover.
During your recovery, you might experience vaginal discharge or light bleeding. If so, avoid using tampons or douche. Use a sanitary pad if necessary. Your doctor should give you more specific guidelines.
How long do you stay in the hospital after prolapse surgery?
After your prolapse surgery, it is likely that you will need to remain hospitalized for 2 – 3 days depending on the operation and any underlying medical conditions you have. During this time your medical care takers will help ensure your recovery by monitoring for any potential complications and providing clean, sanitized treatment of the operation site.
Are There Complications with Prolapse Surgery?
Although pelvic surgery has proven to be a very safe procedure, as with any surgery, there are a few risks and potential complications that can arise. Please discuss this with your doctor but the common ones include:
Bleeding
Infection
Tissue or organ injury
Hernia
Conversion to open surgery
Urinary incontinence
Urinary retention
Vesicovaginal fistula (rare, abnormal connection between vagina and bladder)
If you are experiencing any of these symptoms of complications, it is important that you seek medical assistance. In some cases these symptoms can be common and unserious, but it is always best to consult your doctor if you have any concerns.
Can pelvic floor muscles be repaired?
If you have experienced a prolapse, uterine or otherwise, it can be a shocking and painful experience. However, there are ways to decrease symptoms without surgery.
Nonsurgical Treatments
There are several ways in which to treat a uterine or vaginal prolapse. The three most common approaches are pessary, restorative exercises, and biofeedback therapy.
Pessary
A pessary is probably one of the first treatments your doctor will recommend if you have symptoms of POP. A pessary is a ring shaped device that is inserted into your vagina. This will help support your pelvic organs. Being fitted for a pessary is a lot like being fitted for a diaphragm. Many of my clients with severe POP find that a pessary is useful for allowing them to live fuller lives while they slowly use PT and exercise to help resolve the prolapse.
Restorative Exercises & Physical Therapy
Pelvic floor exercises help strengthen your pelvic muscles. Although the most common exercise recommended by health professionals today is the kegel exercise, there are many more exercises that you can do that are helpful for restoring PF function and giving support for your pelvic organs. Kegels are a pretty outdated model of care when used alone, without a more whole body approach to healing.
What is involved in pelvic floor reconstruction?
Pelvic floor reconstruction surgery is a group of procedures that are performed to treat prolapse of uterus, rectum, small intestines, or other pelvic organs.
Anterior Vaginal Repair
Anterior repair is a surgical procedure that seeks to reinforce weakened layers between the bladder and the vagina. This surgery helps relieve symptoms such as vaginal bulging and to improve bladder function.
The surgery can be performed under general anaesthetic. The most common method of anterior repair is by an incision made along the centre of the front wall of the vagina – starting at the entrance and ending at the top of the vagina. The weakened layers are then repaired and anu superfluous tissue is removed. This is typically done with absorbable stitches.
Posterior Vaginal Repair
A back wall (posterior) vaginal prolapse is usually caused by weakness in the tissues and muscles that divide the vagina from the lower part of the bowel. This surgical procedure is performed to order to repair or restore the weakened layers between the rectum and the vagina.
As with an anterior vaginal repair surgery, posterior repair surgery is usually performed under general anesthetic. The procedure involves a minor incision being made along the back wall of the vagina starting at the entrance and finishing near the top. The weakened layers are then repaired using absorbable stitches.
Vaginal Hysterectomy
A vaginal hysterectomy is typically performed with a prolapsed uterus. This is when the uterus (womb) descends into the vagina and in some severe cases, protrudes or extends outside of the vaginal canal. The surgery is performed by removing the uterus through the vagina.
A vaginal hysterectomy is performed under general or spinal anaesthetic. In order to remove the uterus, the surgeon will make an incision at the top of the vagina around the cervix, clears the bowel and bladder from the uterus, and cuts through the connecting tissues to remove the uterus. The surgeon will then close the vaginal vault and commonly adds additional supporting stitches as the surgery is being performed.
Does Physical Therapy Help Post-Surgery?
If you are meeting with a physical / occupational therapist or taking part in a rehabilitation program Restore Your Core, post-surgery, some of the common exercises and techniques consist of:
Posture
Spine, pelvis, and hip alignment is necessary for a sustained recovery. Being mindful of good posture will help relieve any additional strain or pressure you apply to your pelvic region.
Restful Poses
These poses are positions which utilize gravity to encourage the pelvic organs to be “repositioned” back into the pelvic cavity.
Lower abdominal Exercises
This involves contracting the lower abdominal muscles while practicing dynamic and static exercises. If done correctly, it can limit the stress placed on the interior organs during activities which increase intra-abdominal pressure (i.e. squats).
PFM Strengthening
PFM strengthening exercises are a great way to help get your body back to its normal function and to heal from POP surgery. I advise getting instruction from a pelvic floor specialist who is trained in assessing the whole person to determine the appropriate exercise routines for you.

Baptists preach religious intolerance at Gay Pride marchers. London, 02.07.2011
As this year's London Gay Pride parade made its way from Portland Place, down Regent Street and then on to Trafalgar Square, marchers and onlookers alike were quite shocked and generally offended to discover that there was a demonstration set up at the bottom of Waterloo Place by a group of so-called Christians from the Baptist Church - some of whom looked like they had been time-warped directly from the 1950's, complete with emotional constipation - who spent the entire afternoon insulting and demeaning all gay people and anyone who accepts homosexuality as a part of the enormously wide spectrum of human sexuality by cherry-picking snippets from the Bible - without proper context - and generally showing themselves up to be nothing more than a bunch of hate-filled bigots who laughably claim to love the people they were standing there belittling.
Needless to say the gay marchers responded with a continual torrent of cat-calls, laughter, jeering, rude hand-signals, kissing and even a bit of breast-bearing. All of this was just feeding the Baptist's justification for their prejudice, of course, and clearly this group of ideologically-driven individuals felt somehow emotionally nourished and vindicated by the experience, but the truth is that they came across as petty, arrogant and malicious anachronisms.
When I arrived on the scene two grinning lesbians with three large black umbrellas were pointedly blocking the public's view of the Baptists and as many of the large, lurid yellow placards erected by the religious zealots as they could. A little later on the onlookers erupted in cheers and whistles as two younger girls kissed right in front of the anti-gay demonstrators, and after that a young man demanded a copy of the Bible from the Baptists and proceeded to sit cross-legged on the pavement checking every single quote mentioned on the yellow boards so he could see for himself how the individual phrases had been quoted completely out of context, just to suit the zealots' low opinion. The preachers spent much of their time mentioning the Devil, but in my eyes the Devil was the one holding the microphone, waving a book around, trying to inflict their misery on everyone else...

It is popular in Japan today to drink water immediately after waking up
every morning. Furthermore, scientific tests have proven a its value. We
publish below a description of use of water for our readers. For old and

A wild riot of colour as thousands celebrate London's Gay Pride Parade 2011. London 02.07.2011
This Saturday July 2nd 2011 saw the explosion of colour and fabulous carnival/cabaret fancy-dress which is the annual Gay Pride parade passing through the packed London streets as many Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual and Transgender groups representing special interest campaigning groups, trade unions, the armed forces, police service, christian groups and several of London's gay bars and clubs celebrated their sexuality and diversity, watched and cheered on by tens of thousands of enthusiastic members of the public.
The days celebrations were purposefully snubbed by London mayor Boris Johnson much to the anger and irritation of many, since Mr. Johnson is expected to show support for all Londoners. However, his greatest opponent in the upcoming mayoral elections, former London Mayor Ken Livingstone was to be seen - as always - at the head of the parade, accompanied by human and gay rights activist Peter Tatchell.
Gone was the nervous tension of the original trail-blazing Gay Pride marches of the late 1970's and early 80's, as a new generation of gay people enjoy far greater public acceptance of their lifestyle in what feel like more enlightened times. What is taken for granted now was fought for in the past by courageous activists and their political supporters who wanted to see an end to the homophobic bigotry and institutionalised discrimination which used to be the universal public position towards them.

After the parade made its way from Portland Place to Trafalgar Square, the marchers and bystanders alike dispersed into Soho for some serious street partying which lasted late into the night. There was a main stage in Trafalgar Square which hosted a long rosta of minor-league pop and dance acts during the afternoon, though oddly this year there were no big-name headliners, and another Dance Stage in Soho Square which featured a great line-up of club DJs.

You did it. You birthed a bouncing baby and your body is in recovery from enduring the sheer awesomeness that is childbirth. As the months that follow unfold and that baby starts to grow, you can’t help but shake the feeling that something is not quite right down there. Why is peeing so weird now? When did my body decide it was okay to just leak out said pee every time I cough? Am I supposed to just wear panty liners all day every day just in case someone makes me laugh? Why does it feel like there is a bulge in my vagina?
Though it is a common post-birth issue, the first time you hear that you have pelvic organ prolapse may be frustrating and quite upsetting. I mean, your body was made to have babies. Why would something so natural cause such an issue?
Avoiding the S Word
Your doctor may suggest many treatment options to help prevent your prolapse from advancing to the point where they begin to start talking about surgery. Surgery is a SCARY word that we would like to help you avoid. Prolapse reconstruction surgery, or Vaginoplasty, may be recommended in advanced cases. However, if you aren’t severely prolapsed, there are steps you can take that may help you avoid surgery all together. Yes, early prolapse can be corrected without ever ending up under the knife. Even a grade 3.
Popular less invasive treatment offered can include vaginal pessaries and Kegels as the only form of pelvic floor treatment. Don’t hear me wrong, these can be very helpful, but I am more a fan of using a functional, whole body exercise approach to healing core and pelvic floor issues. Pelvic Organ Prolapse: What is it?
First things first, let’s make sure we are all speaking the same language here: pelvic organ prolapse is the injury in which one or more of your pelvic organs “drop” from their normal position. Though bladder prolapse is the most common, any pelvic organ (bladder, uterus, rectum) can make the descent. This injury happens for a variety of reasons and sometimes, it is really not known why. Birth injury, core and pelvic floor muscle imbalances, postural misalignments, and excess intra ab pressure are all reasons one might sustain a prolapse.
If pelvic organ prolapse is allowed to advance to its fullest potential, the prolapsed organ will make its way down the path of least resistance into the vaginal canal. Eventually, the organ may exit the vaginal opening.
Different types of Pelvic Organ Prolapse include:
Bladder prolapse- Cystocele (the most common)
Rectum prolapse- Rectocele
Uterine Prolapse
Vaginal Vault Prolapse
Small Intestine Prolapse- Enterocele
Though pelvic organ prolapse can be caused by obesity, aging, and other stressors on the floor muscles, vaginal birth is the leading cause of prolapse. As you can imagine, vaginal birth does a number on those pelvic floor muscles because of the amount of stretch the pelvic floor muscle must undergo to make way for the baby’s grand entrance into the world. This is why it is pretty common to pelvic floor prolapse after childbirth.
How Do I Know if My Prolapse is Severe?
The severity of Pelvic Organ Prolapse has to be diagnosed by your healthcare provider, but the general rule of thumb for staging is:
Stage 1: Very minimal prolapse – organs still have a fair amount of support by the pelvic floor.
Stage 2: Pelvic floor organs have begun to drop, but they are still contained inside the vagina.
Stage 3: Pelvic floor organs have dropped to, or beyond the opening of the vagina.
Stage 4: Pelvic floor organs have dropped completely through the vaginal opening.
Stage 3 and 4 are when you may be experiencing the more severe effects of prolapse. If your prolapse is severe, you may experience a wide range of symptoms. Check out our other articles that break down the specifics for different types of pelvic organ prolapse. Some of the most common symptoms for severe prolapse can include but are not limited to :
the sensation that you are sitting on a ball
A dragging sensation or heaviness in the vagina
vaginal bleeding
increase or change in discharge
problems with or inability to engage in sexual intercourse
any pelvic organ protruding out of the vagina
a heavy feeling in the pelvic area
The feeling of trapped bubbles in your vagina
constipation or difficulty passing stool
recurring bladder infections or difficulty emptying your bladder
Incontinence, which is the inability to control when you pee.
If you experience any of these, contact your doctor. We recommend seeing a Urogyn to get tested, and ideal is to be tested standing up, not lying down.
Can Prolapse Correct Itself?
We have many clients who are not symptom free! Unfortunately, if left to its own devices, organ prolapse may continue getting worse if no intervention or treatment measures are taken. Our muscles and skeletal systems are the protectors and stabilizers of our organs. When our pelvic floor is just as strong as the rest of our core, straining and bearing down is countered within the core to keep all the organs in their assigned spots. Once the pelvic floor muscles have been compromised / weakened, they are no longer able to counter the force of your rest of your core.
If your prolapse is the result of a vaginal birth you had, you are likely to be doing some heavy lifting in the day to day life just to take care of your newest addition to your family. Every time you do heavy lifting, the force that is placed on your already prolapsed organ may push it further down the path of least resistance and right into your vaginal tissues. Because of this it is important to begin building a strong organ support system to help prevent pelvic organ prolapse from becoming worse.
Can I push a Prolapse back up?
When our insides decide to try to escape to the outside, it is time to get a professional involved. Though it may actually be possible to temporarily push fully prolapsed pelvic organs back into the vaginal opening, this is not a long term solution or an actual treatment. It is important to seek medical advice and see a pelvic floor therapist if severe symptomatic stage 3 or stage 4 prolapse occurs.
Why is My Prolapse Worse Some Days?
There are times during your cycle where you might feel worse. Hormonal changes can affect how your prolapse feels. This is common and even if you are doing great in your rehab process and this happens, do not panic! Many women feel it worse during ovulation. If you have just finished moving furniture around the house or gotten home from an intense workout just to be greeted with worse prolapse symptoms for the rest of the day, this is actually very normal for many women who suffer with pelvic organ prolapse. Straining on the toilet while trying to work through some constipation can also worsen your symptoms. When doing strenuous activities, we bear down and increase the pressure within ourselves and this can place even more pressure and force on the organs.
What should you not do with a prolapse?
You may have noticed a bulge in your vaginal wall, a lower hanging uterus or experienced a change in your urine, stool, or discharge pattern that makes you suspect a pelvic organ prolapse. As you seek medical advice, it is important to begin to treat your conditions by cutting back on strenuous exercise until you can build up your pelvic floor muscles through direct treatment. Prolapse can be frustrating to deal with to say the very least, but if there must be a silver lining, it is that the doctor has ordered you to get another family member to move that couch.
Here are the things to avoid when you have pelvic organ prolapse:
Avoid straining while on the toilet
Avoid being on your feet for long periods of time
Avoid lifting, pulling or straining
Avoid an intense workout routine – until you have a great core / pelvic floor strategy.
Here are the things TO DO when you have pelvic organ prolapse:
Make sure you hydrate frequently throughout the day
Eat all the fiber. Beans, veggies, fruits, you name it.
Educate yourself on prolapse, the core system, all of the connections that can increase and decrease pressure.
Consider a pelvic floor therapist, pelvic floor trained teacher, or Online program to guide you through healing.
How Can I Reverse Prolapse Without Surgery?
Pelvic organ prolapse may be reversed without invasive procedures like surgery. Working on your pelvic floor system in a functional way can begin to reverse the prolapse descent.
If I have not said it enough, I will say it again: always talk to your provider if you are experiencing symptoms that interfere with your daily routine and you are worried about.
Your doctor may recommend Kegel exercises as the only form of pelvic floor muscle treatment. Kegel exercises are the favorite prescription within the medical field for weakness in pelvic floor muscles but it is essentially an old school approach that fails to work for many and makes things worse for many others. I like to label these shots "BBSW"... bird butt says what. This one actually needs ID. I do have better pics of their side view, this is just a teaser until I can get the rest up. That GREAT camouflage going on there is why this one was chosen for now.
Also just took a better video of one of these guys running around on the walkway feet from my own feet. I know what I think they are but haven't found a pic that matches well enough. That tells me I'm surely wrong so I'm throwing it out there to see if anyone knows. I've got an old 1966 Golden Birds of North America that I've found 3 totally different birds that are possibilities. Pics online, though, aren't coming close enough for a positive ID.
The one I think it is the most.... Cornell's All About Birds range map says should be nowhere near here right now, let alone breeding. The pic you're looking at is the rearend of a fledgling that was being fed by an adult just seconds before.
Biggest hint I've got right now is they wobble like nobody's business. They look like their shocks fell off 3 miles back yonder. Almost takes Dramamine to watch the couple videos I'll be uploading to Youtube hopefully soon. For a split second when I first saw them, I thought they had a health issue like constipation or a defecation problem. That's what the behavior looks like but it's species specific behavior because they're all doing it.... *A LOT*... even when standing still.
They run like I've seen Killdeer, Robins, and Thrashers do. And I've got a quick video blip of the flight that is straight across, low to the ground and inspires images of birds moving in brush.. They seem to favor poking around in brushy areas (overgrown areas and intentionally placed birdie escape brush piles).
So... what birds wobble like Weebles... and would be breeding in North Central Georgia right now..? :)

*I THINK*... these guys are Louisiana Waterthrush (LOWA, Seiurus motacilla/Parkesia motacilla).. Breeding range is right, for one thing. Tail bobbing and pink legs are LOWA identifiers, too. Waterthrush was one of the three birds that stood out in the birding guide book.. It's just a little harder to make a positive ID when you're looking at drawings rather than the real deal. :)
They're grouped in with warblers, which shocked me. They're water favoring... warblers. And somewhere I read the "thrush" part of their name is for resembling... thrushes. I'll vouch for that. For a tiny split second, I thought they WERE your usual garden variety Thrushes until I realized... they weren't. :)
So about that water part, had a bad leak on the city's side of my water meter. Took your typical amount of government time before it was fixed. I actually started thinking they might be contemplating taxes on... waterfront property because of a little stream that started running. Having Waterthrushes make their first appearance at the same time is a pretty funny coincidence.. They're sure not shy about hitting the various bird baths set up out front here, too. :)
And PS Not just me intrigued with these newcomers. Carolina Wrens have been voicing an alert the last couple days.. And I caught a Tufted Titmouse that flew down and sat about a foot above one earlier today. Titmouse sat there twisting its head from one side to the other as it sized up the newcomer. Very funny to witness. I take it Waterthrushes aren't something any of these guys see in the nearby surrounding wild, either. Interesting :)

Medicinal Uses: Wild Geranium is valued as a useful astringent and hemostatic. The roots contain large amounts of tannin, which is a bitter-tasting polyphenol produced by the plant. Polyphenols bind and precipitate proteins explaining its properties as both an astringent and styptic. When applied topically, an astringent binds to the mucous membrane causing it to constrict or shrink. This process serves the dual purpose of both protecting the area to which it was applied and promoting healing. A hemostatic is any agent that stops bleeding through mild coagulation of skin proteins.
Early Native Americans recognized the value of Wild Geranium and used it as an ingredient in many medicinal treatments. Chippewa Indians used dried, powdered rhizomes mixed with grape juice as a mouthwash for children with thrush. A poultice from the base or pounded roots of the plant was used to treat burns and hemorrhoids. The leaves and roots were used to treat sore throats, hemorrhages, gonorrhea, and cholera. Like many other tannin-containing substances, Native Americans also used Wild Geranium as an anti-diarrhea treatment. Before particularizing any of the experiments, I wish to state one or two things which seem to more properly belong in this place than further along. This in the interest of clearness. The massed experiments established to my satisfaction certain generalizations, to wit:
1. That the human race is of one distinct species. It exhibits slight variations–in color, stature, mental caliber, and so on–due to climate, environment, and so forth; but it is a species by itself, and not to be confounded with any other.

In the course of my reading I had come across a case where, many years ago, some hunters on our Great Plains organized a buffalo hunt for the entertainment of an English earl–that, and to provide some fresh meat for his larder. They had charming sport. They killed seventy-two of those great animals; and ate part of one of them and left the seventy-one to rot. In order to determine the difference between an anaconda and an earl–if any–I caused seven young calves to be turned into the anaconda’s cage. The grateful reptile immediately crushed one of them and swallowed it, then lay back satisfied. It showed no further interest in the calves, and no disposition to harm them. I tried this experiment with other anacondas; always with the same result. The fact stood proven that the difference between an earl and an anaconda is that the earl is cruel and the anaconda isn’t; and that the earl wantonly destroys what he has no use for, but the anaconda doesn’t. This seemed to suggest that the anaconda was not descended from the earl. It also seemed to suggest that the earl was descended from the anaconda, and had lost a great deal in the translation.

Cats are loose in their morals, but not consciously so. Man, in his descent from the cat, has brought the cat’s looseness with him but has left the unconsciousness behind–the saving grace which excuses the cat. The cat is innocent, man is not.
Indecency, vulgarity, obscenity–these are strictly confined to man; he invented them. Among the higher animals there is no trace of them. They hide nothing; they are not ashamed. Man, with his soiled mind, covers himself. He will not even enter a drawing room with his breast and back naked, so alive are he and his mates to indecent suggestion. Man is “The Animal that Laughs.” But so does the monkey, as Mr. Darwin pointed out; and so does the Australian bird that is called the laughing jackass. No–Man is the only Animal that Blushes. He is the only one that does it–or has occasion to.

The cat is moderate–unhumanly moderate: she only scares the mouse, she does not hurt it; she doesn’t dig out its eyes, or tear off its skin, or drive splinters under its nails–man-fashion; when she is done playing with it she makes a sudden meal of it and puts it out of its trouble. Man is the Cruel Animal. He alone is of that distinction.

I consider that the strongest count against his intelligence is the fact that with that record back of him he blandly sets himself up as the head animal of the lot: whereas by his own standards he is the bottom one.
In truth, man is incurably foolish. Simple things which the other animals easily learn, he is incapable of learning. Among my experiments was this. In an hour I taught a cat and a dog to be friends. I put them in a cage. In another hour I taught them to be friends with a rabbit. In the course of two days I was able to add a fox, a goose, a squirrel and some doves. Finally a monkey. They lived together in peace; even affectionately.
Next, in another cage I confined an Irish Catholic from Tipperary, and as soon as he seemed tame I added a Scotch Presbytarian from Aberdeen. Next a Turk from Constantinople; a Greek Christian from Crete; an Armenian; a Methodist from the wilds of Arkansas; a Buddhist from China; a Brahman from Benares. Finally, a Salvation Army Colonel from Wapping. Then I stayed away two whole days. When I came back to note results, the cage of Higher Animals was all right, but in the other there was but a chaos of gory odds and ends of turbans and fezzes and plaids and bones and flesh–not a specimen left alive. These Reasoning Animals had disagreed on a theological detail and carried the matter to a Higher Court.
One is obliged to concede that in true loftiness of character, Man cannot claim to approach even the meanest of the Higher Animals. It is plain that he is constitutionally incapable of approaching that altitude; that he is constitutionally afflicted with a Defect which must make such approach forever impossible, for it is manifest that this defect is permanent in him, indestructible, ineradicable. I find this Defect to be the Moral Sense. He is the only animal that has it. It is the secret of his degradation. It is the quality which enables him to do wrong. It has no other office. It is incapable of performing any other function. It could never have been intended to perform any other. Without it, man could do no wrong. He would rise at once to the level of the Higher Animals.
Since the Moral Sense has but one office, the one capacity–to enable man to do wrong–it is plainly without value to him. It is as valueless to him as is disease. In fact, it manifestly is a disease. Rabies is bad, but it is not so bad as this disease. Rabies enables a man to do a bad, but it is not so bad as this disease. Rabies enables a man to do a thing which he could not do when in a healthy state: kill his neighbor with a poisonous bite. No one is the better man for having rabies. The Moral Sense enables a man to do wrong. It enables him to do wrong in a thousand ways. Rabies is an innocent disease, compared to the Moral Sense. No one, then, can be the better man for having the Moral Sense. What, now, do we find the Primal Curse to have been? Plainly what it was in the beginning: the infliction upon man of the Moral Sense; the ability to distinguish good from evil; and with it, necessarily, the ability to do evil; for there can be no evil act without the presence of consciousness of it in the doer of it.
And so I find that we have descended and degenerated, from some far ancestor–some microscopic atom wandering at its pleasure between the mighty horizons of a drop of water perchance–insect by insect, animal by animal, reptile by reptile, down the long highway of smirchless innocence, till we have reached the bottom stage of development–namable as the Human Being. Below us–nothing. Nothing but the Frenchman.
There is only one possible stage below the Moral Sense; that is the Immoral Sense. The Frenchman has it. Man is but a little lower than the angels. This definitely locates him. He is between the angels and the French.
Man seems to be a rickety poor sort of a thing, any way you take him; a kind of British Museum of infirmities and inferiorities. He is always undergoing repairs. A machine that was as unreliable as he is would have no market. On top of his specialty–the Moral Sense–are piled a multitude of minor infirmities; such a multitude, indeed, that one may broadly call them countless. The higher animals get their teeth without pain or inconvenience. Man gets his through months and months of cruel torture; and at a time of life when he is but ill able to bear it. As soon as he has got them they must all be pulled out again, for they were of no value in the first place, not worth the loss of a night’s rest. The second set will answer for a while, by being reinforced occasionally with rubber or plugged up with gold; but he will never ger a set which can really be depended on till a dentist makes him one. This set will be called “false” teeth–as if he had ever worn any other kind.
In a wild state–a natural state–the Higher Animals have a few diseases; diseases of little consequence; the main one is old age. But man starts in as a child and lives on diseases till the end, as a regular diet. He has mumps, measles, whooping cough, croup, tonsillitis, diptheria, scarlet fever, almost as a matter of course. Afterward, as he goes along, his life continues to be threatened at every turn: by colds, coughs, asthma, bronchitis, itch, cholera, cancer, consumption, yellow fever, bilious fever, typhus fevers, hay fever, ague, chilblains, piles, inflammation of the entrails, indigestion, toothache, earache, deafness, dumbness, blindness, influenza, chicken pox, cowpox, smallpox, liver compliant, constipation, bloody flux, warts, pimples, boils, carbuncles, abscesses, bunions, corns, tumors, fistulas, pneumonia, softening of the brain, melancholia and fifteen other kinds of insanity; dysentery, jaundice, diseases of the heart, the bones, the skin, the scalp, the spleen, the kidneys, the nerves, the brain, the blood; scrofula, paralysis, leprosy, neuralgia, palsy, fits, headache, thirteen kinds of rheumatism, forty-six of gout, and a formidable supply of gross and unprintable disorders of one sort and another. Also–but why continue the list? The mere names of the agents appointed to keep this shackly machine out of repair would hide him from sight if printed on his body in the smallest type known to the founder’s art. He is but a basket of pestilent corruption provided for the support and entertainment of swarming armies of bacilli–armies commissioned to rot him and destroy him, and each army equipped with a special detail of the work. The process of waylaying him, persecuting him, rotting him, killing him, begins with his first breath, and there is no mercy, no pity, no truce till he draws his last one.
Look at the workmanship of him, in certain of its particulars. What are his tonsils for? They perform no useful function; they have no value. They have no business there. They are but a trap. They have but the one office, the one industry: to provide tonsillitis and quinsy and such things for the possessor of them. And what is the vermiform appendix for? It has no value; it cannot perform any useful service. It is but an ambuscaded enemy whose sole interest in life is to lie in wait for stray grapeseeds and employ them to breed strangulated hernia. And what are the male’s mammals for? For business, they are out of the question; as an ornament, they are a mistake. What is his beard for? It performs no useful function; it is a nuisance and a discomfort; all nations hate it; all nations persecute it with a razor. And because it is a nuisance and a discomfort, Nature never allows the supply of it to fall short, in any man’s case, between puberty and the grave. You never see a man baldheaded on his chin. But his hair! It is a graceful ornament, it is a comfort, it is the best of all protections against certain perilous ailments, man prizes it above emeralds and rubies. And because of these things Nature puts it on, half the time, so that it won’t stay. Man’s sight, smell, hearing, sense of locality–how inferior they are. The condor sees a corpse at five miles; man has no telescope that can do it. The bloodhound follows a scent that is two days old. The robin hears the earthworm burrowing his course under the ground. The cat, deported in a closed basket, finds its way home again through twenty miles of country which it has never seen.
Certain functions lodged in the other sex perform in a lamentably inferior way as compared with the performance of the same functions in the Higher Animals. In the human being, menstruation, gestation and parturition are terms which stand for horrors. In the Higher Animals these things are hardly even inconveniences.
For style, look at the Bengal tiger–that ideal of grace, beauty, physical perfection, majesty. And then look at Man–that poor thing. He is the Animal of the Wig, the Trepanned Skull, the Ear Trumpet, the Glass Eye, the Pasteboard Nose, the Porcelain Teeth, the Silver Windpipe, the Wooden Leg–a creature that is mended and patched all over, from top to bottom. If he can’t get renewals of his bric-a-brac in the next world, what will he look like?
He has just one stupendous superiority. In his intellect he is supreme. The Higher Animals cannot touch him there. It is curious, it is noteworthy, that no heaven has ever been offered him wherein his one sole superiority was provided with a chance to enjoy itself. Even when he himself has imagined a heaven, he has never made provision in it for intellectual joys. It is a striking omission. It seems a tacit confession that heavens are provided for the Higher Animals alone. This is matter for thought; and for serious thought. And it is full of a grim suggestion: that we are not as important, perhaps, as we had all along supposed we were.

One of the things Devon has to do to help with the chemotherapy process is drink lots of water to help flush the poisons through his system. He slept almost the entire day on the sofa yesterday . He says he's tired and his tummy is not quite right, chemo always brings severe constipation. He says his skin feels like paper. The mouth sores are starting to appear. He has this stuff called magic mouthwash he says is really magic. It coats and soothes making it feel better.
He and Kam went to Granny's for a while but they are home now.

Our cat, Tigritsa, travelled 10,000 miles around the world and spent a month in quarantine in order to be with us in Australia. She settled into the new house very nicely, and was getting on fine.
The other day she seemed a little off colour. She had suffered with constipation on and off for the last eight months or so, and seemed to be having another bout of it. But she didn't get any better, and within a few days she wasn't eating at all and was obviously unwell.
This morning we took her to the vet, who examined her and decided to keep her in for an X-ray so that the cause of the blockage could be discovered. At lunchtime we were told the results; she had a massive lymphoma in her abdomen. It had obviously been growing for months; ever since we noticed the minor bout of constipation earlier in the year. The prognosis was not good - her age counted against her surviving surgery and/or chemotherapy.
Early this afternoon we had her put to sleep. She was 15 years old. All we have of her now are memories and her collar.
A year ago today I was playing Memoir '44.

As a part of the summer squash family, zucchini not only offers delightful taste and texture to many dishes, but also carries with it many health benefits. Here are eight reasons why you and should include it in your diet.
#1: Diet
One cup of zucchini has 36 calories and 10% of the RDA of dietary fiber, which aids in digestion, prevents constipation, maintains low blood sugar and curbs overeating.
#2: Lower Cholesterol
The dietary fiber in zucchini helps lower cholesterol by attaching itself to bile acids that the liver makes from cholesterol for digesting fat. Because fiber binds so well with bile acid, thus crowding its ability to immediately digest fat, the liver is charged with producing more bile acid.
The liver then draws upon even more cholesterol to produce bile acid, consequently lowering the overall cholesterol level in the body. Furthermore, the high levels of vitamin C and vitamin A prevent cholesterol from oxidizing in the body's blood vessels, thus hampering the onset of atherosclerosis.
#3: Cancer Prevention
Because dietary fiber promotes healthy and regular bowel movements, the high amounts of fiber in zucchini also help prevent carcinogenic toxins from settling in the colon. - There are approximately 500,000 people dying each year because they have Alzheimer’s.

Alzheimer’s disease affects the nerve cells in the brain, causing their degeneration. Usually people over 65 years suffer from this disease, but occasionally people up to 50 years old can have it.

# OM Mantra Dhyana:
- Sit in Padmasana or Sukh asana.
- Keep the head and spine straight and upright and place the hands on the knees in Jyana mudra.
- Close the eyes and relax the whole body.
- Repeat the word Aum loudly. In two steps of deep sounds of “0000“ followed by “mmmm”.
- Let the body be saturated with the sound of Aum.
- Daily do it for minimum 10 times.

- Padamasana or sukhasana provide a firm base and a triangular path to contain the flow of pran.
- Om meditation is nirigina meditation. Om sound is a form of energy made up of vibr ation certain vibration have the power to heal.

#Halasana (Plough pose)
- Lie flat on your back with legs straight on the floor feet together, arms (palms facing down) by you side on the floor and toes pointing upwards.
- Relax the body and slowly raise your legs from the ground keeping both feet together.
- Try to touch the toes to the floor behind the head.
- Do not force the toes to touch the floor, place the arms on the floor with palms facing down.
- Breathing normal, stay in the posture for as long as is comfortable, then slowly lower your legs on the floor pressing your elbows, and hands down.
- The head should rest on the floor.
- Relax in shavaasana. Normalize your breathing.
Benefits:
- This asana improves liver and kidney functions.
- This asana influences thyroid gland, which balances the metabolic rate and the thymus gland, which strengthen the immune system.
Caution:
- Those suffering from High Blood pressure, hernia, slipped disc, sciatica or any other back problem.
#Dhanurasana (Bow pose):

Lawyer MR Jan explains why das kulcha used to be popular in Lahore. Since water in the city was very hard, he says, residents ate das kulcha, which contains ingredients like fennel seeds’ water and achar which help cure various digestive problems such as constipation.
Das kulcha was one of the most popular breakfast items in Lahore for breakfast until about three decades ago. According to some aged Lahoris, before Partition people from Amritsar and other adjacent areas especially visited Lahore on weekends to eat das kulcha. Unfortunately, only one baker in the city, Zahid Butt, still bakes this traditional food and the only shop, Chohatta Mufti Baqir inside Mochi Gate, sells it.
Butt runs his business in Chuna Mandi Chowk and informed me that the recipe had been passed down through generations in his family. Apparently, the recipe is closely guarded and never given to outsiders.
Talking about the method of cooking, he said, “We prepare a special vegetarian broth by boiling chick pea pulse (daal channa) and fennel seeds separately for kneading the flour. Then after kneading the flour is ready for baking and we call it khamir which is baked in a specially made burner (bhatti).”
He also makes sure to stay super clean before cooking the das kulcha. “The khamir of das kulcha is very delicate and unhygienic elements like sweat and even the smell of onion and mango can spoil it. That is why before kneading flour we not only clean ourselves but also cover our hands.” This is also why doing wuzu was considered an integral part of cooking.
Butt also talked about lonchra, an item that traditionally accompanies the das kulcha, along with cooked chickpeas, achar and salad. “Lonchra is basically fried gram flour which is fried very carefully in suitable heat.”
He blames the constant migration of people to and from the walled city for the current obscurity of das kulcha. However, Rahat Dar a photo-journalist whose family has lived in the walled city for many generations begs to differ. He says after Partition, and the subsequent migration of Hindus, vegetarian items like das kulcha began to die out.

The study that gave this book its title was inspired by a survey initiated in the '70s by Chou EnLai as he was dying of cancer. Ninety-six% of the population (880 million people) participated in 2,400 counties in China. The survey included death rates for four dozen different diseases including 12 different kinds of cancers. The resulting atlas implied that cancer was a disease of environmental conditions and lifestyle rather than genetics. The counties with the highest occurrences of some cancers were 100 times greater than in counties with the lowest occurrences.
In the '80s, to further study these results, the author, T. Colin Campbell, a nutritional biochemist at Cornell University, and a handful of other notable scientists from both the United States and China, embarked on an in depth study of the dietary habits of the Chinese in correlation with disease. Thus was born the China Study. Their findings were startling and are the basis of discussion for the rest of the book.
The study showed that high cholesterol was a prevalent indicator of numerous diseases, not just heart disease. More significantly those with very low levels of cholesterol subsisted on a predominantly plant based diet. They were basically vegans. Poor vegans who died of nutritional inadequacy and poor sanitation while the diseases of affluence, the ones that scare us most, were chiefly a result of extravagant living, (but not as extravagant as in the US). The study compared people of the same age so does not mean that poor people died young before they got a chance to get the other diseases.
The conclusions of the scientists were that a high carbohydrate diet of unrefined plant based whole foods, resulted in much more fiber consumed and many plant based antioxidants providing a host of benefits. While consuming diets high in protein and fat transfers the calories into storage as fat rather than into body heat. (The only reason people lost weight on the famous high protein, meat based Atkins diet was because they were severely limiting their calorie intake to 33% less than normal. Over half of those on the Atkins diet suffered from constipation, bad breath, headaches and a 53% increase in calcium excreted in the urine. Plus many more health problems down the road.)
The book does not stop at the results of the China Study alone, but cross references the results with a host of other compelling American studies supporting research on breast, prostate and colon cancers, diabetes, obesity, autoimmune diseases, osteoporosis, kidney stones and Alzheimer's. These studies all point in the same general direction. Diet is more important than genes or environmental toxins in the development of these diseases. An animal based diet is what gets the bad genes to fully express themselves, while a plant based diet can minimize the impact of toxins. Consuming a high fat, high protein, animal based diet increases the rate at which toxins bind to DNA to form products that cause cancer.
It is further revealed that cows milk (casein) is a significant factor in the development of cancers especially prostate cancer and is linked to Type 1 diabetes. As one who is lactose intolerant, growing up in a country that doesn't consume milk products, I've always been suspicious of the myth that milk was necessary for bone health. So what were we thinking to feed human babies milk that is meant to put 1000 pounds on a calf within the first few months of life? According to research, the reason our body doesn't absorb enough calcium is because animal protein increases metabolic acids and this condition actually leaches calcium from bones. Only 5 to 6% of our diet needs to be protein to replace what is excreted as amino acids, not 35% as recommended by industry driven government dietary guidelines. The manipulation of such dietary guidelines accounted for in the book.
The role of big industry, i.e. diary producers, meat producers and big ag in protecting and promoting their product translates to considerable ability to influence government policy with industry driven science while suppressing inconvenient facts, in much the same fashion as the politics of global warming has been obfuscated.
The last third of the book describes how reductionist science is in the habit of studying only one element at a time without regard to how elements react with each other in the environment of the body. The Western habit of isolating just one ingredient in order to derive conclusions about its affect on the body, only makes sense if you plan to use pharmaceuticals to run your body; this lack of context is misleading and confuses the public.
Western doctors are also only peripherally trained in nutrition, as it affects drugs, so are not going to prescribe a diet based treatment for disease despite evidence that a plant based diet can reverse the symptons of disease. Those mavericks that do research diet treatments risk being marginalized and their careers truncated. Campbell describes accounts of such from his own career and those of other doctors doing this work. (He and his colleagues eat a vegan diet and recommends such because it is simpler than focusing on what you can't eat and because he believes the benefits are increased with a zero animal product diet than with the 10% actually consumed by many of those he studied.)
So in the end it is not only the Western diet that is killing us, but Western reductionist thinking and Western propaganda-driven-capitalism. And then there is my pet theory — identity politics. America doesn't want to be taking its diet cues from a Chinese peasant; as Campbell points out, Americans believe that our animal based, protein rich diet is the best in the world and that it is somehow unAmerican to think otherwise. Plus Americans like to eat it so no study is going to change that; annoying vegans being the fanatical exceptions that prove the rule.
We did change our diet though. I am happy to return to my Chinese and Thai lactose free roots with a tiny bit of meat while Catherine again embraces vegetarianism with some cheese. This book was recommended to C by her boss, a big brain science and numbers person, in response to the news of her cancer.

Raw meat diet for cats
2 ¾ cup (1 ½ lb) raw, ground, muscle meat (3-20% fat by mass) (do not mix meats, organs, from different animals)
¾ cup (½ lb) raw, ground heart
½ cup (3 ½ oz.) raw, ground liver
NOTE: I also add kidney, which I or my butcher cleans
1 cup (8 oz.) filtered spring water
2 raw egg yolks
2 Tbsp bone meal powder
1 Tbsp Gelatin
2 tsp. Psyllium Husks (as is or powdered)
1 tsp Salmon oil (3 capsules)
300 IU Vitamin E (1 capsule)
1 capsule 50mg Vitamin B Complex
Important Note: Be absolutely sure to follow the recipe’s indicated quantity of water in ratio to the psyllium husks/psyllium husk powder. Psyllium husks can lead to constipation if not combined and ingested with sufficient water!
1. All meat ingredients should be from the same species of animal. Measure your meat ingredients. Grind the muscle meat, heart, kidney and liver using a coarse plate, or chop by hand. Combine the meats mixing gently, but thoroughly. Return to the refrigerator.
2. Into a separate bowl add 1 cup water. Whisk all your other ingredients, other than meat, into the water, finishing with psyllium husks and gelatin, as these easily congeal and might otherwise form clumps. Within a few minutes the ingredients and water will turn into a semi-gelatinous texture.
3. Add your meats to the gelatinous supplement blend. Mix thoroughly but gently. Violent stirring will cause the meat to become “stringy” Package immediately. Portion as single or double meals into small plastic containers. Small freezer bags are somewhat inconvenient when thawing the food. The food can also be frozen in ice cube trays, and then be bulk packed in freezer bags once frozen. I freeze my batches in glass Pyrex containers. Each container contains 2 - 3 days' worth of food. I have another one in the fridge thawing so it's ready when the first one is done.

Repeat the recitation and blow on 2nd and 3rd date respectively. It’s not necessary to eat dates in the same night. These dates can be eaten anytime and at any day.
