Column of Constantine in Istanbul, Turkey

Located right next to the Colosseum, the Arch of Constantine was dedicated in 315 AD.

Most of the reliefs and other decorative material are not original to the arch--they were removed from other locations and "repurposed." Many say that sculptors at this time lacked the ability to make them, and resorted to using existing items.

Constantine, probably best known for playing an influential role in the proclamation of the Edict of Milan, which decreed religious tolerance throughout the empire.

The Arch of Constantine (Italian: Arco di Costantino) is a triumphal arch in Rome, situated between the Colosseum and the Palatine Hill. It was erected to commemorate Constantine I's victory over Maxentius at the Battle of Milvian Bridge on October 28, 312. Dedicated in 315, it is the latest of the existing triumphal arches in Rome, from which it differs by spolia, the extensive re-use of parts of earlier buildings.
