The weather cooperated last night so we had our first photo walk of the season to conclude this month's Cameras At The Confluence: Urban Landscapes session at Nature At The Confluence. We observed three geese families, but this one was happy to pose for us. I was locked in at 85mm so couldn't get a wide shot showing more photographers "focusing" on these guys. [I confess to hogging "the spot" that framed them nicely.]

Recent photograph of Confluence Academy, 3017 North 13th Street. By Craig Hadley 2007 MHS-PP

The ground on which Confluence Academy is located has a long history of manufacturing prior to its more recent conversion to educational needs. Beginning with the earliest records, it appears that the St. Louis Screw Company occupied tracts of land stretching from 3017 to 3029 N. 13th Street in 1887. The company, with a “modest” capital of $30,000, built a new two-story structure in 1891. “Here,” according to an 1894 business publication, “forty skilled mechanics [were] employed, the range of production embracing iron and steel set screws, hexagon, square, and round cap screws…the trade extends to all parts of the United States and Mexico.”

Although we are unclear as to the exact date, we know for sure that the St. Louis Screw and Bolt Company moved to a new location at 6900 North Broadway no later than the early 1950s. According to entries in surviving editions of the St. Louis city directories, the United Last Company, a division of the Krentler Brothers Shoe Last Manufacturers, occupied the old St. Louis Screw building from 1955 until 1965 producing “shoe lasts” (lasts refer to a mold of the human foot used to produce footwear of various styles).

Large-scale manufacturing slowed in the late 1960s as urban centers across America faced stiff overseas competition and the unfortunate side-effects of suburban sprawl. But just a few short years after the Krentler brothers closed their operation down, a new company occupied 3017 N. 13th street. Kribs Neon Sign Company produced commercial signage for St. Louisans at this location beginning in 1969. The sign company stayed in business until it closed in 19xx, thus making the property available for Confluence Academy.
