Flying over the Colca canyon in Peru. It can reach a maximum wingspan of 3.3 meters and a lifespan that can well exceed 50 years.
With this image, my flickr stat's show that there are over 2 millions views as of today. I will never know which image was the special image, so based on this photo's placement I will use it to mark this notable occasion.
This shot was taken on the Condor Lookout Trail. At the top you have a great view of the Paine Grande and the Cuernos (horns) del Paine and Lake Pehoe. On the Island in the lake is the Hotel Pehoe.
Next to last in my big birds of North America series is this shot of a California Condor soaring over Marble Canyon in Arizona. A bonus condor soars higher up.
From the Cornell Lab:
Length: 4 ft.
Weight: 21 LBS.
Wingspan: 9 ft.
The California Condor continues its slow road to recovery from near extinction. In 1987 the total population was 27. All 27 were captured and a captive breeding program was initiated. According to the Ventana Wildlife Society, as of December 2022, the total population is 537 of which 336 live in the wild. Lead poisoning continues as a major threat as the condors feed on animals shot with lead ammunition by hunters. Despite the remarkable success of the efforts to save the species, they are still listed as "critically endangered".
I choose to remove the identification tags on my California Condor images. For those interested, this is R1.
The "3' wing tag indicates that this is condor 523 and he is the father of the newly fledged Condor number 1000.

The California condor is a New World vulture and the largest North American land bird. It became extinct in the wild in 1987 when all remaining wild individuals were captured, but has since been reintroduced to northern Arizona and southern Utah, the coastal mountains of California, and northern Baja California in Mexico (source: Wikipedia). Photo taken at the Santa Barbara Zoo in Santa Barbara, California.
Close-up - The eyes are not sharp which is accurate. This bird has cataracts and is being cared for at the Miami Metrozoo. It could not survive on its own, not being able to see to hunt for prey.

The condor is one of the most spectacular geoglyphs on the Nazca site.
The Nazca Geoglyphs (or Nazca Lines) are large figures drawn on the ground, often stylized animals, sometimes mere lines several miles long, visible in the Nazca desert in southern Peru.
These geoglyphs were made by the Nazcas, a pre-Inca civilization that flourished between 300 BC AD and 800 AD. There are more than 800 geoglyphs registered.
The ground on which these geoglyphs are outlined is covered with pebbles that iron oxide stains red.
By removing them, the Nazcas brought out a grayish gypsum soil, thus cutting out the outlines of the figures they were tracing.
Several theories have been put forth to explain the existence of these geoglyphs.
Notably, the German mathematician Maria Reiche, who devoted most of her life to archaeological study and preservation of the site, claimed that these geoglyphs would form a huge astronomical calendar.
According to another theory, the geoglyphs represented places of worship and places of activity where the Nazcas walked during ritual processions.
In the trapeziums, the whole space was a processional space. In the linear figures, the Nazcas returned and followed the line to the exit at the other end.

The bit of orange on its face indicates this bird is nearing maturity. Fully mature condors have a mottled orange head.
It's on a frequently used perch on the wall of Marble Canyon in Arizona.
I'm going random for the next week or so. Will be posting whatever I feel like every morning.

The Andean condor (Vultur gryphus) is a South American bird in the New World vulture family Cathartidae and is the only member of the genus Vultur. Found in the Andes mountains and adjacent Pacific coasts of western South America, the Andean condor is the largest flying bird in the world by combined measurement of weight and wingspan. It has a maximum wingspan of 3.3 m (10 ft 10 in)
The centre of the so-called prison district is occupied by the Temple of the Condor (Templo del Cóndor), a flat altar carved into the rock at the entrance to a cave, where the beak and collar of a condor can be perfectly recognised. In the background, the two rock formations seem to imitate the outstretched wings of the bird, symbol of the celestial world in the Inca cosmogony.
The California condor is one of the rarest birds in the world. It has a wingspan of 9 1/2 feet and he flew within 12 feet of my face for this photo. A few times, he flew so close he almost brushed me with his wings.
I had 9 Condors flying far and near and landing on the cliffs too. The ones that came the closest approached me from behind. So I wasn't aware til they went overhead.
You know you're a birder if someone yells, DUCK." And you look up.
