No trip to Arizona would be complete for us without visiting the California Condors of Marble Canyon. Though still critically endangered, the population of California Condors has grown steadily from a low point of just 22 birds in 1982 to over 500 today, more than half of which are flying free in the wild.

This one was photographed hanging out on a bridge 467 feet above the Colorado River. Not the ideal setting, but hey...it's a California Condor.

The condor is one of the most spectacular geoglyphs on the Nazca site.

The Nazca Geoglyphs (or Nazca Lines) are large figures drawn on the ground, often stylized animals, sometimes mere lines several miles long, visible in the Nazca desert in southern Peru.

These geoglyphs were made by the Nazcas, a pre-Inca civilization that flourished between 300 BC AD and 800 AD. There are more than 800 geoglyphs registered.

The ground on which these geoglyphs are outlined is covered with pebbles that iron oxide stains red.

By removing them, the Nazcas brought out a grayish gypsum soil, thus cutting out the outlines of the figures they were tracing.

Several theories have been put forth to explain the existence of these geoglyphs.

Notably, the German mathematician Maria Reiche, who devoted most of her life to archaeological study and preservation of the site, claimed that these geoglyphs would form a huge astronomical calendar.

According to another theory, the geoglyphs represented places of worship and places of activity where the Nazcas walked during ritual processions.

In the trapeziums, the whole space was a processional space. In the linear figures, the Nazcas returned and followed the line to the exit at the other end.

The California condor is one of the rarest birds in the world. It has a wingspan of 9 1/2 feet and he flew within 12 feet of my face for this photo. A few times, he flew so close he almost brushed me with his wings.

I had 9 Condors flying far and near and landing on the cliffs too. The ones that came the closest approached me from behind. So I wasn't aware til they went overhead.

You know you're a birder if someone yells, DUCK." And you look up.

Adult on top, younger bird lower left. Condors are very social, and there is a certain hierarchy, such as the higher position. It was obvious, though not so much in this photo, the bird lower down risks a potential poop shower.

The bit of orange on its face indicates this bird is nearing maturity. Fully mature condors have a mottled orange head.

It's on a frequently used perch on the wall of Marble Canyon in Arizona.

I'm going random for the next week or so. Will be posting whatever I feel like every morning.

The Andean condor (Vultur gryphus) is a South American bird in the New World vulture family Cathartidae and is the only member of the genus Vultur. Found in the Andes mountains and adjacent Pacific coasts of western South America, the Andean condor is the largest flying bird in the world by combined measurement of weight and wingspan. It has a maximum wingspan of 3.3 m (10 ft 10 in)

Sarah and I used the practice paper for the origami cranes. And it's a damn good thing because they turned out to be condors instead of cranes. And we laughed and we giggled and I couldn't stop and I almost peed my pants. So Boba came in to save the day and wrangled some condors for us. Seems he's not only a bounty hunter!
