1171 is an ACMU (air conditioned multiple unit) built 1965 by Pullman Standard for the New York Central as NYC 4768, in the Danbury Railway Museum roster since 2005.
After an order by New York Central of 100 ACMUs (air conditioned multiple units) from St. Louis Car in 1950-51 (4500 series), the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) purchased a new series of 53 new ACMUs from Pullman Standard in 1962 (Pullman order 7011) for the New York Central (4600-4625 and 4700-4725 series). A second series of 34 additional ACMUs (Pullman order 7031) by the PANYNJ in 1965 followed in the 4750-4783 series. The 1965 series had slight variations from the 1962 fleet and both 1962/1965 ACMUs were fully compatible and could run in mixed trains with the older 1950 cars (which were replaced by M-1As under MTA in the 1970s along with the prewar NYC MUs). 30 MP75 MUs (12 cabs and 18 trailers) were delivered to LIRR in August 1963 for upcoming World's Fair service and were very similar to the NYC ACMUs in design and configuration, substituting Westinghouse electrical equipment and motors for GE and being fully compatible with all older LIRR electric equipment dating back to 1908.
Renumbered to 1100-1152 (1962 series) and 1153-1186 (1965 series) under Penn Central and MTA, the ACMUs kept their same numbers under Metro-North (1983-onward), with most of the fleet overhauled at Morrison Knudsen in Boise between 1983 and 1985.
In later years the ACMUs mainly appeared on weekday peak schedules, usually on Croton-Harmon and North White Plains locals. Railfoneâ„¢ was installed on selected cars.
The 1962-1965 ACMUs were replaced by the large 336 car M-7A order from Bombardier between 2004-2005 (which also replaced the 1971-1973 Budd/GE M-1As). A stillborn single unit M-5 in the early 1990s was planned to replaced the ACMUs, but never made it past the concept stage.
Each ACMU (a single unit electric MU running on third rail) had 400 HP with four GE 1240 motors and 17KG192J2 control (on 1965 units), WABCO 26-MUE braking with dynamic mode, weighing 116,000 lbs with seating capacity of 130, 85' length (over couplers), 10'-5" width and 13'-9" height.
