I have bought this product after a lot of research and recommendations, I had read extensively about MamaEarth products and after several reviews and comparisons of reviews on most of the e-commerce sites I decided to go ahead with the purchase. The product is good and I have been using it for 2 weeks now, it's too early to talk about the results but hopefully based on the reviews from friends and family I will see results. 1926 Gibson TB-3 (FON 8414-15) with 5 string conversion neck by unknown maker. Whoever made it, however, did a very nice job as this is a very easy playing banjo. The neck falls in hand nicely and notes true. It was recently professionally set up with the action on the "lowish" side as that's my preference but a Gibson Mastertone is easily adjustable if you like a different set up. The pot is in excellent condition and mostly original though some changes or replacements have been made over the years. Being a 1926, it is a tube and plate banjo with a slotted stretcher band and small resonator bolts. It has a 2 piece arm rest. The tailpiece is a modern 5 string pre war replica. It is fitted with a flathead tone ring believed to be a Yates no hole, The neck and resonator were refinished in black along the way and has a couple of blems on the neck from use as I've attempted to show in the pictures. It is a great prewar Gibson Mastertone with that big, fat old Gibson sound at a reasonable price.
I just realized I overlooked one of the questions asked: The resonator screws or bolts that attached the resonator are the early type which have a hex head as opposed to a thumb screw and they are correct for this instrument and, to the best of my knowledge, are original to this banjo. I believe the truss rods and related bolts, flange hardware, tension hoop and the nuts for the hooks are original parts and they are in very nice order. Its hard to say on the hooks as they are also in very nice shape but, if they've been replaced along the way, they are certainly the correct type.
Q:Do you have a case? Are there spikes on the sty string? Do you know what kind of tuners and does the 5th string tuner match the set? Can you tell me some of the non original changes (I can get an original tailpiece)? Looks like the resonator screws might not be original. Was the rim cut to install the tone ring. Looks like the label has been scratched off the top. I have a newer archtop I am looking for the prewar flattop sound.
A:You ask all good questions: - Yes the banjo will be shipped in a quality, hard shell case (Blue velour lining - the case and all latches and handle are in good shape) - There are spikes on 7 and 9 - The tuners are modern ones in good working order but not branded, they were on the banjo when I got it. All 5 have matching imitation MOP knobs. - I talked to the luthier who did the set up and have a bit more information: He tells me the tone ring is a Yates no hole. The banjo, being a '26 originally had a ball bearing tone ring. The holes in the rim for the springs and balls were filled with hard maple dowels which is the correct way to do this conversion. The rim was then turned for the flathead tone ring. Its a great sounding prewar..... Thanks for your interest
