Just before my departure, I pause for a moment at the beginning of the former drift dike and it looks as if an enormous hand has torn off the dike from the mainland.

I try in vain to imagine the fierce and huge waves there were to make this happen during the December storms in 2013.

The former house and barns of the State Beach Guardian also stood in this spot and it is marked by the three sticks in the sand of the beach.

The old shipping beacon "Emder Kaap" from 1883 balances on the edge of the abbyss and will have to be moved further inland.

In 1999, the 21 1/2 meters high shipping beacon was already moved 150 meters inland and that will have to be done again in the forseeable future because the western coast of Rottumeroog is getting smaller and smaller because the sea continues to affect and wash away the dunes........

We have now arrived at the south-west point, where we see the horrors when the sea is given free rein.

We see the remnants of the once mighty drift dike that was built in 1950, but has been swept away by storms since the Dutch State finished maintenance work on the sea defenses in 1991.

The basis of this drift dike consisted of construction rubble that was covered with the so called "Gobi mats", a large and huge nylon tarp that was weighted with concrete blocks that were glued to it.

The intention was that this drift dike would accelerate the formation of dunes at the south-west point over the years.

Due to the many and violent storms, these plans and attemps did not achive much and the dike was finally completly destroyed by the raging sea and all that remains are the gigantic nylon mats and the concrete blocks.

The contrast with the beautiful east side of Rottumeroog is in stark constrast to the rough and destroyed west side, where the sea can go its destructive way unhindered.

In this place the immense power of the sea becomes visable and you feel insignifcant towards it....

"The cubes of memory" is a work started in 2001 and located in the port of Llanes, created by the Basque artist AgustĂn Ibarrola, that turned the concrete blocks of the port breakwater into a huge sculpture where each of these blocks have been painted with a different sense representing the author's ideas. During the first phase, 300 faces of 100 blocks were painted and in the second phase 177 faces of another 66 cubes.

As a girl on road trips in the 1960's I dreaded the rest rooms in the back of (or sometimes on the sides) of gas stations!

For anyone who is interested, below is a link on the history of gas station bathrooms.

Warm light from the late afternoon sun - but offset by a freezing wind. Still great to be on Alnmouth beach despite there not being much of it left at high tide.

The concrete blocks are World War 2 anti-tank defences which have stood the test of time remarkably well.

100x 2023 edition - Northumberland revisited - 5/100

Closed and I understand will be reopened as a budget overnight stay hotel. A quick grab shot.

Another angle from the previous photo. Goderich, Ontario.

Let's hope it's not buttermilk...

Another slide restoration, I think from the cars, mid-1980s. My thanks to Edward Sutton for identifying this as the West Somerset line in an earlier upload.

The cars really caught my eye as much as the train. From the top, a Mini Pick-Up and a Mini Countryman. I think it's safe to conclude they didn't bring the concrete blocks. Next, an Austin 1100, a Chrysler Alpine - 1976 European car of the year, but a look on the internet and there's only 2 with MOTs in the UK. Lastly, an Audi 100, MG MGB GT and a Morris Minor.

The painted base of a concrete column located in an underpass, formerly for a rail line, passing under a state road.

Golfbad Waterloopbos Flevoland

From 1951 to 1996, the Waterloopkundig Laboratorium studied the course of the water using scale models of harbors, rivers and coasts.

The photo is part of the wave pool. In the 1970s, for example, they tested the influence of waves on dikes and on a gravel beach

Tank traps at Lossiemouth Stotfield (West Beach) a reminder of turbulent times. This was a long exposure using my kit lens. I used the kit lens as it gave me the best angle of view for the subject. I saw these concrete blocks and knew I would have to photograph them with the intention of capturing some silky movement around the bases. I used Cokin ND filters to help me take the longer exposure. Taken at sunset

Flowers in concrete retaining wall topped by chain-;link fence

The sea wall in Lambert's Bay harbour has been painted with bright colours. I love the massive concrete blocks behind it…The Atlantic Ocean can be wild on the West Coast, at times.

Thank you Johann for identifying the concrete structures. :-)

From our Saturday day out in Sidmouth. 20 degrees and partially sunny - that meant we had to drive to the seaside. As usual we spent some time at Jacob's Ladder and had a nice picnic. I then quickly ventured to the distant part of the beach to take a few photos with the lovely red cliffs. I seem to have a knack for capturing dogs weeing at scenic views - this is the second one photobombing my shot LOL!!
