Partisans of the Ortigara Division in Lusiana - April 1945.

Lusiana is located on the hilly area of the Pedemontana vicentina at the foot of the Asiago plateau.

In this area the "Francesco Covolo" Battalion of the "Red Flames" was active, composed mainly of young people from Canove, led by Federico Covolo "Broca", the deputy commander is Francesco Urbani, my father's cousin.

25 April 1945 siege of the German garrison of Lusiana. April 28, the Germans surrender but another German column arrives from Conco, surrenders on the morning of 29. Evening of 29 April interruption of the road in the area of Lusiana blocking a German column and take possession of a tank.

The partisan in the centre is probably Giovanni Mosele called "Ivan", commander of the Brigade "Fiamme Rosse" (Red Flames), part of the "Gruppo Brigate Sette Comuni" (Seven Communes Brigade Group) of the "Monte Ortigara Alpine Division" (Alpine Division Mount Ortigara).

Bassano del Grappa (Venetian: Basan (plain form) or Bassan/Bassàn (italianized form))is a city and comune , in the Vicenza province, in the region Veneto, in northern Italy. It bounds the communes of Cassola, Marostica, Solagna, Pove del Grappa, Romano d'Ezzelino, Campolongo sul Brenta, Conco, Rosà, Cartigliano and Nove. Some neighbourhoods of these communes have become in practice a part of the urban area of Bassano, so that the population of the whole urban area is higher than the population of Bassano proper.

The artist Jacopo Bassano was born, worked, and died in Bassano and took it as his surname. Bassano Del Grappa is also famous for inventing the spirit Grappa, traditionally an after-dinner drink made from pomace (discarded grape seeds, stalks, and stems).

Teesside Steelworks at Warrenby founded by Dorman Long in 1917 and the ICI Wilton chemical works of the post-war era. The steel produced at Dorman Long was used to build the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Tyne Bridge, Auckland Harbour Bridge and many others. Today steel is made further west at the Corus BOS plant in Lackenby, using iron produced at the company's Redcar blast furnace, the largest in Europe. Both sites became part of Tata Steel when Corus was taken over in 2007, but as of February 2008, they still trade under the Corus name. However, these operations were recently ended.

The symbol of Bassano del Grappa is the covered wooden pontoon bridge , which was designed by the architect Andrea Palladio in 1569. The bridge was destroyed many times, the last time during WWII. The Alpine soldiers, or Alpini have always revered the wooden bridge and Bassano del Grappa. After the destruction of the bridge, they took up a private collection and had the bridge completely rebuilt. Often soldiers flock to the bridge to remember and sing songs from their days as alpine soldiers. The grappa shop of Nardini Distillery is located on the bridge, known as Ponte degli Alpini.

In 1175 Bassano was conquered by Vicenza, but the city maintained a semi-autonomous status as a free commune in the 13th century also, when it was under the family of the Ezzelinos. In 1368 it was acquired by the Visconti of Milan and, in 1404, by the Republic of Venice: the latter did not alter the citadine magistratures, limiting to impose a Captain chosen by the Venetian Senate. The city became home to a flourishing industry producing wool, silk, iron and copper, and mainly for ceramics; in the 18th became especially famous in all Europe for the presence of the Remondini printers.During the French Revolutionary Wars the city was the seat of the Battle of Bassano. In 1815 it was included in the Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia, and became part of the unified Kingdom of Italy in 1866. Napoleon Bonaparte remained in Bassano del Grappa for many months. The original name of the town was Bassano Veneto. In 1928, the name was changed to Bassano del Grappa, meaning Bassano of Mount Grappa, as a memorial to the soldiers killed. The Museo Civico, the town museum, is situated in the former convent alongside the church of San Francesco in Piazza Garibaldi. It has a small archaeological section with finds from local excavations, and also a fine collection of Apulian vases donated by a local collector. The museum's main attraction can be found upstairs, though, where a spacious art gallery houses many works by the local dal Ponte or Bassano family, including a hall dedicated to the most renowned: Jacopo Bassano (or dal Ponte, or da Ponte) with many of his works gathered from local churches and buildings. There are also works by other artists, many local, including views of Venice and other parts of Italy, portraits. A small room pays tribute to the opera singer Tito Gobbi who was from Bassano: along with a bust you can admire some of his opera costumes. A larger exhibition space is devoted to the sculptor Antonio Canova, and contains many of his plaster models for statues.

Often soldiers flock to the bridge to remember and sing songs from their days as alpine soldiers. The grappa shop of Nardini Distillery is located on the bridge, known as Ponte degli Alpini.

Binondo Church (built 1596 onward)

The original structure of the Binondo Church, formally known as Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Parish or The Minor Basilica and National Shrine of San Lorenzo Ruiz, was constructed in 1596. Founded by Dominican friars, it is one of the oldest places of Christian worship in the Philippines. One of its significant early architects was Domingo de la Cruz González. Although repeatedly damaged from earthquakes (1645, 1863, 1880), typhoons and war the often rebuilt Binondo church still reflects its historic Spanish and European Baroque style and retains many elements of its original character. The octagonal bell tower, however, is the only significant remaining part of the original structure

Heavily damaged during the Second World War, the Binondo church was reconstructed in three phases and completed in 1984. A new three-story parish center and convent was added at the back of the church.. The most striking feature of the rebuilt interior is the more marble and gilded reredos depicting the façade of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome.

The Spanish had barred Chinese from living within the walled city of the Intramuros, so they set roots north of the Pasig River. There the Filipino-Chinese Christians built their church on what is now Quitin Paredes Street at Plaza Calderon dela Barca. The numerous Chinese Christians in the community still provide much of the support for its maintenance. The neighborhood around the church remains Manila’s Chinatown with numerous “Old World” style Chinese stores, restaurants and banks—amidst the modernity of coffee and gift shops. A number of the buildings in the neighborhood managed to survive the extensive bombing of the Second World War.

St. Lorenzo Ruiz (c. 1600- 1637) was the son of a Chinese father and Filipina mother; both were Catholic. He initially served as an altar boy for the convent of the church and later served as a notary and clerk for the Confraternity of the Holy Rosary. Falsely accused of murdering a Spaniard, in 1636 he took refuge on a ship that was sailing to Okinawa. Together with three Dominican priests on the ship, he was arrested, tortured and killed (he died September 19, 1637, in Nagasaki) without renouncing his faith. This occurred during intense persecution of Christians in Japan in the early Tokugawa period (although before the persecutions that followed the Shimabara uprising).

Pope John Paul II beatified him on February 18, 1981, in the first beatification to occur outside of the Vatican. Lorenzo Ruiz was canonized on October 18, 1987, and was the first Filipino saint.

The Middlesbrough Transporter Bridge has been a symbol of the area since it was opened in 1911. There are only two other Transporter Bridges still in existence in Britain. These bridges are at Newport (Gwent), opened 1906 and Warrington, opened 1916.

The Middlesbrough Transporter is a total of 851 feet (259.3 metres) in length which makes it the longest of those remaining Transporter Bridges in the world. Its cantilever construction has three main bridge spans that give it its unique appearance. The bridge is, effectively, two almost independent structures joined at the centre of the River Tees. Each half of the bridge has an 'anchor' span of 140 feet (42.6 metres) and then cantilevers across the river some 285 feet (86.8 metres) from the tower leg to meet its twin from the opposite bank. The passenger gondola is suspended by steel cables and runs on a wheel and rail system approximately 160 feet (48.7 metres) above the River Tees. While Middlesbrough's Transporter is the largest operational Transporter Bridge the largest bridge ever of this type is recorded as 1000 feet (304.7 metres) in length, built over the River Mersey near Widnes. That bridge closed in 1961 and has, sadly, now been demolished.

As far as we have been able to research, there have been some twenty Transporter Bridges constructed around the world of which only eleven still exist and a lesser number again are still in regular use. The first bridge, near Bilbao, Spain, opened in 1893. All the bridges were constructed in the 23 years between 1893 and 1916 and of the nine demolished structures an average life of 36 years was achieved.

The Middlesbrough Transporter Bridge is fully operational and provides a regular quarter-hourly service between Middlesbrough and Port Clarence for 18 hours a day. This service is interrupted from time to time for routine maintenance works, with some lengthier closures for major refurbishment. It remains the largest of the Transporter Bridges operating worldwide, and provides a valuable public transport service, crossing the river in two minutes.

In December 1993, the bridge was awarded the Institution of Mechanical Engineers' highest honour, The Heritage Plaque for engineering excellence, in recognition of the Council's efforts in keeping the bridge in good working order. Its historical importance was also recognised in 1985 by its listing as a Grade II* Listed Building and its prominence as a local landmark was further enhanced in 1993 by the installation of flood lights that operate during the winter months.

In April 1996 local government reorganisation transferred the ownership of the bridge to Middlesbrough Council and Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council with Middlesbrough Council responsible for the day-to-day running and maintenance of the bridge.

In recent years despite all the efforts of the cast of Auf Wiedersehen Pet, the bridge still remains the focal point of the River Tees. The TV show, which became an instant hit, showed the Transporter being disassembled and sent to Arizona in America. The people behind the programme obviously did a very good job on the computers as many Teessiders thought their beloved bridge was on its way across the Atlantic. However we won't be saying 'Auf Wiedersehen' to our bridge for a few more years yet.

Bassano del Grappa is a city and comune in the province of Vicenza, region Veneto, in northern Italy. It bounds the communes of Cassola, Marostica, Solagna, Pove del Grappa, Romano d'Ezzelino, Campolongo sul Brenta, Conco, Rosà, Cartigliano and Nove. The artist Jacopo Bassano was born, worked, and died in Bassano and took it as his surname. Bassano Del Grappa is also famous for the spirit Grappa. The city was founded in the 2nd century BCE by a Roman called Bassianus, whence the name, as an agricultural estate. The first news of the existence of the medieval city dates from 998, while the Castle is mentioned first in 1150. Ernest Hemingway during his days as an ambulance driver in the war spent many days in Bassano and eventually settled there as part of A Farewell to Arms. Also other American writers spent some days in Bassano during WWI such as Scott Fitzgerald and Dos Passos.During World War I Bassano was in the front area, and all industrial activities were halted.

After the terrible battles on Mount Grappa in WWI , where thousands of soldiers lost their lives, a decision was made to change the name of the town. In 1928, the name was changed to Bassano del Grappa, meaning Bassano of Mount Grappa, as a memorial to the soldiers killed. In World War II, after the Armistice with Italy, the city was invaded by German troops, which killed or deported numerous inhabitants. The symbol of the town is the covered wooden pontoon bridge , which was designed by the architect Andrea Palladio in 1569.
