Red Ear Sliders. Cross Creek Ranch, Fulshear, Texas. Cross Creek Ranch is a 6,000-home development planted in prairie natives that attract butterflies and with many lakes that attract flocks of water birds.
Some of the exposed rock around Loch Assynt, including that which forms these small islands, is thought to be roughly 3,000 million years old. Sections of the north-west mainland and the Hebrides are among the oldest landscapes in the world, well over half the age of the Earth itself.
There's apparently a theory or tradition that the word 'Assynt' derives from a fight between two brothers, Unt, the man of peace, and Ass-Unt, the man of discord. Discord won the day, hence 'Assynt'. Presumably not a true story.

My friend Suzy found these snails on the branch of a fallen tree at our local beach. She thought they might make an interesting subject for an obsessed photographer, and so led me to them last week.
It was low tide, but the waves were big. These snails weren't far from the water, and to shoot this, I had to get my tripod wet. I plan to go back when we have less swell.

Entomology Students Conclave 2024, organized by the Entomological Society of India at GKVK Campus of UAS, Bengaluru.
Conclave — from the Latin for "with a key" — starts today. There will be 115 cardinal electors housed in the guesthouse run by nuns. Allegedly, the cardinals will have no phones, TVs, Internet, etc. The electors will celebrate Mass in St. Peter's Basilica. By mid-afternoon, they will walk into the Sistine Chapel in procession while singing prayers and take their places. Once in the chapel, the scene will be breathtaking as they stand underneath the blue and gold hues of the Renaissance frescoes.

I didn't think I'd be interested in this but I did love it, generally. Highly recommend for former Catholics.
