#ITSC2015 Leveraging High-Performance Electric Transportation for Intelligent Systems
Grainger Chair Professor in Electric Machinery and Electromechanics
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA
Rapid advances continue in high-performance electric and hybrid vehicle systems. More-electric systems in automobiles, trucks, aircraft, ships, rail, and a wide range of mobile equipment make them more energy efficient, reduce emissions, and make vehicles agile.
This presentation summarizes high-performance electric drives and their performance capabilities with emphasis on electric cars, aircraft, and heavy equipment. High-performance drives provide torque response on time scales faster than 0.1 s and facilitate new ways to operate transport platforms.
The presentation describes ways to leverage rapid control and enhanced dynamic performance for intelligent transportation. Electric drives offer special opportunities for networking and vehicle interaction, for collision avoidance and occupant protection, and for dynamic management of energy.
Vehicle-to-grid concepts that allow intelligent transportation to serve as direct or virtual energy storage are also discussed. Examples from NASA’s long-term aircraft electrification programs, vehicle systems from several manufacturers, and recent hybrid electric construction equipment are presented.

Isaac Tolbert will graduate Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, with a concentration in Renewable Electric Energy Systems and minor in Philosophy. Isaac earned the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Scholarly Achievement Senior Award. Within our program, Isaac served as a mentor, Class of 2019 Senior Legacy Committee member, and NC Mountains to Coast service team member. On campus, Isaac was the co-founder of the Student Energy Club and worked at Technician as a copy editor, social media manager, and social media analytics manager. In the community, Isaac volunteered with FLIP NC, the Bernie Sanders campaign, Amanda Bregel for NC House, and Environment NC. Isaac completed an REU with Future Renewable Electric Energy Delivery and Management Systems Center and presented at the NC State Undergraduate Research Symposium. Isaac completed three rotations with Honeywell International as a hardware engineer. This summer, Isaac will be interning with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Colorado before starting his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering at NC State’s Future Renewable Electric Energy Delivery and Managements Systems Center. Pre-distorted waveforms are imprinted on frequency-comb-originating carriers in the Data Pre-Distortion (DPD) block. The information is fully restored at the output of the optical fiber, which is free from the nonlinear crosstalk.
Olena Palyvoda, assistant research professor in the Wayne State University Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, was selected as the recipient of the Robert S. Jampel, M.D., Ph.D. Endowed Prize in Ophthalmology. The award honors Jampel's distinguished leadership and supports research scientists.
Palyvoda presented a lecture based on her winning abstract, titled “Retinoblastoma: Two Genetic Hits: Discovery of Tumor Suppressor Mechanism of Oncogenesis,” during the 58th Annual Clinical Conference Update in Clinical Ophthalmology in June at the Kresge Eye Institute. Her research is focused on identifying prognostic Retinoblastoma and other ocular disease markers using non-invasive spectroscopy approaches in collaboration with Dr. John Roarty, chief of the Pediatric Ophthalmology Department at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan. Palyvoda’s goal is to develop new approaches for potential novel therapies for ocular lesions.
