Description: The active contour method is a semi-automatic image segmentation process based on deformable models, i.e., closed parametric curves or surfaces with physical properties that, under the influence of external and internal mechanical forces, deform and coalesce adapting to image features. This figure exhibits the active contour evolution of a cervical spine, showing a transversal section of the segmented image data (left) and the corresponding 3-D evolution (right).

The HUGS Program at Jefferson Lab is an educational summer program designed for experimental and theoretical nuclear and particle physics graduate students who have finished their coursework and have at least one year of research experience in these fields.
Photos taken from my 3 day alphagraph workshop in Metz, France. The workshop took place at ESAL Metz art school with 12 students. The basic setup was this :
DAY 1 - explore letter forms with a new digital tool.
DAY 2 - laser cut and make the letters
DAY 3 - print with a printing press

At PNNL, the Biological Sciences Facility and Computational Sciences Facility were dedicated in the Fall of 2009.
The new facilities will enable discoveries in biological, computational and subsurface sciences and developments in bioenergy, carbon sequestration and homeland security.
The mission of the IACS is to make sustained advances in the fundamental techniques of computation and in high-impact applications with a vision that by 2017, it will be an internationally-recognized institute having vibrant multidisciplinary research and education programs with demonstrated economic benefit to New York State. Including students and staff, the IACS aims to grow close to 100 people by 2018.
There are presently 10 faculty spanning chemistry, materials by design, condensed matter, astrophysics, atmospheric science, nano-science, sociology, applied mathematics, and computer science. Another approximate 20 faculty are affiliated with the institute from diverse departments.

Senior Computational Scientist in Argonne's Mathematics and Computer Science Division. Fischer is a member of the research team that has developed a modern suite of computer tools--called the SHARP Reactor Performance and Safety Simulation Suite--that digitally mimic and allow researchers to “see” the physical processes that occur in a nuclear reactor core, including neutron transport, thermal hydraulics and fuel and structure behavior. Argonne's high-fidelity computer modeling and simulation work in support of advanced nuclear energy systems is a natural outgrowth of the cumulative years of Argonne's expertise in nuclear energy.
On December 30, Ambassador Heidt and Minister of Education Hang Chuon Naron were on hand for a lecture at RUPP by world-famous scientist and entrepreneur Dr. Stephen Wolfram entitled “The Future of Computation and Knowledge.”
Dr. Wolfram is the founder and CEO of software company Wolfram Research, based in the United States, and the creator of the Wolfram Language, which powers the free “answer engine” Wolfram Alpha. The talk was organized by the Ministry of Education, Youth, and Sports; the U.S. Embassy; the Cambodia Science & Engineering Festival; and the Cambodian Mathematical Society.
In his introduction, Ambassador Heidt talked about the role of science, technology, and innovation in the American economy and challenged Cambodian youth to harness technology to build an “innovation society.” Click here to read his remarks.
