Children and youth living with complex health needs are one step closer to accessing a new BC Children’s Hospital centre for health complexity, as construction has reached the halfway mark. Government officials and community partners marked the completion of the building’s primary structure with a “topping-off” event.
This milestone was celebrated with the last panel of mass timber being installed in place above the centre’s main entrance. The centre, slated to open in 2028, will be the first health-care facility in B.C. to use a hybrid mass timber construction.

My test board is growing increasingly complex. It now has a USB cable attached directly, in addition to the PICkit riser pins, and has an oscillator crystal circuit for driving the USB on-chip module. My Wheatstone bridge circuits and amplifiers are going to have to go on another board!
The complexity and rarity of a Rube Goldberg machine makes it all the more interesting to watch from start to finish. This overcomplicated contraption which ultimately performs a simple task, has turned up in popular commercials, events, movies, and TV shows.
At the famous Bryant Park Winter Village in New York City, Bank of America and their partner RED®, wanted to display a unique activation showing that small actions can create a big reaction—bringing us one step closer to ending the AIDS epidemic in Africa.
In order to make this idea tangible, Bank of America worked with a well-known marketing agency, Octagon, in hopes to build a Rube Goldberg experience. Octagon reached out to Britten, a creative production company in Traverse City, Michigan, to help bring this concept to life in just one month. The president, Paul Britten, was more than willing to accept this challenge as his background is in architecture.
“It took a lot of study on Rube Goldberg and his thinking. We created storyboards of each and every element in the process. Then created three-dimensional models until we were confident that the scale of each component was going to work,” said Paul.
The first trigger of the domino effect was to swipe an oversized Bank of America credit card that caused the machine to activate and go through a series of 10 different steps, until it opened up a gift box at the end with a RED® gift inside. The Rube Goldberg was designed to look like old-fashioned toys, built out of plywood, and cut using a MultiCam CNC router.
The Rube Goldberg Experience was on display for four days in Bryant Park, and raised thousands of dollars for project RED®. The entire machine was delivered in-person, assembled, tested, and staffed by Britten’s creative team. “We’ve been in business since 1985, originating as a sign company, but today we are really architects of special projects. We help agencies and other creative people bring their creative ideas to life. We only had a month to pull off this project, from the very first phone call until opening day. The kids were thrilled, there is nothing more fun than seeing their smiling faces,” said Paul.
Britten is one of the few creative companies that has the resources and manpower to oversee every step of a project like this including the initial concept, site survey, design, production, and final installation.

The complexity of a piano's hammer mechanism is pretty impressive. I didn't think to press a key to see if it could still make sound.
The Fraunhofer Gesellschaft hold an event in its Science and Art in Dialog series on June 5th, 2018 in Berlin. The topic of this panel discussion was complexity in art and medicine. Taiwanese artist Yen Tzu Chang addressed the future human-machine relationship in the field of surgery in her performance entitled “Whose Scalpel.”

Complexity #1 I used black background and colorful workout bands to buildup the frame. Just increase some saturation on it.
Janet saw these leaves moving and then we saw them, thousands of leaf cutter ants on the path to Palenque. These guys take the leaf parts to their underground nests where they chew them up, injecting them with fungal spores. The fungi decompose the leaves and are presumably the main food of the ants. So, it's a three-way symbiosis between three Kingdoms, Plantae, Fungi, and Animalia. Pretty amazing. I have some footage of these babies too that I'll put up soon.

Does any living thing need to be so complex?
This is the fruiting (spore-producing) body of a Cladonia genus lichen. It consists of a stem (podetium) rising from the main mass of the lichen (thallus), topped by one or more cups (apothecia) and other spore-producing bits (the brown spheres). The stem and cup are encased in a thin skin (cortex) and covered with tiny greenish scales (squamules). The entire absurdly complex structure is a bit smaller than a fingernail. This is just one of the more than 20,000 species of lichen known worldwide, each with its own absurd complexity; it is amazing what bizarre forms evolution can come up with.
I have, as you can see, been learning some lichen vocabulary, which is almost as complex as the thing it describes. The vocabulary is needed by lichenologists to precisely describe these incredible things called lichens.
