As well as giving an idea of what the local landscape looked like it gives information about the arrival of the first railway in the area and various inventions, some of which were world firsts.

On the whole it was the arrival of railways and clean water sanitation that gave rise to an immense population boom in this country.

The First Chinese Baptist Church of San Francisco anchors this Chinatown streetscape with its deeply textured brick façade and arched fenestration, standing proudly on the corner of Waverly Place and Sacramento Street. From this angle, the iconic Transamerica Pyramid rises in the distance, creating a powerful architectural juxtaposition between a historic faith-based institution and a symbol of San Francisco’s modern skyline. A colorful mural facing Willie “Woo Woo” Wong Playground further ties the building to the community it serves. The church’s architectural strength, combined with the cultural heartbeat of Chinatown, captures the spirit of perseverance and transformation in San Francisco.

8.5 hours of grouting.

Not as bad as I thought it would be.

But I do know now that I am most definitely not a fan of wide grout spaces.

Part of a Community Mural in a tunnel in Croydon ...

Liked the colours and the subject matter ...

I recently finished painting The Portola long View Mural at 2444 San Bruno Ave SF, CA 94134 on the Silliman St side just off the Silver Ave exit. The location of the scene was a view from Goettingen and Dwight street, one of the signature views of downtown from the Portola District at dusk, otherwise known as the magic hour, just after sundown. The concept for the mural originated from a painting I entered in the MUNI Art 2019 contest presented by SFMTA and San Francisco Beautiful in partnership with the Poetry Society of America, which commissioned me to paint 8 scenes with the theme Connecting Our Communities, some of them were matched to poems. The art was printed and displayed on 20 MUNI buses where the ads usually go for a couple of months as a rolling gallery. I painted two scenes of the Portola and submitted one of them to The Portola Neighborhood Association’s Multi Mural Project.

Here is my speech upon accepting the award for “Connecting Our Communities”.

akstudio.smugmug.com/Portola-Longview-Mural/i-TMz5Fpw/A

“Every neighborhood in San Francisco has a hill with a long view of the bay or the ocean where you can rise above the fray on the ground, see other communities, giving you a sense of awe that reminds you why we live here. Each painting I did of the various neighborhoods includes a MUNI bus which literally connects our communities. When people get to know their neighbors, share food, music, and culture they are happier and healthier. Attending each neighborhood’s signature events, community meetings, and street fairs connects us together. Connected communities are more resilient. They are better able to spring back when hard times hit to protect and prepare themselves against global issues. Together we are Giant!” Here is the whole series: akstudio.smugmug.com/San-Francisco-Beautiful/

I entered a modified version of the painting in the Multi Mural project to fit the original space that was chosen requiring a long narrow panoramic format, so I added about a third on either side which you can see here akstudio.smugmug.com/San-Francisco-Beautiful/i-ZsR65zw/A

I am painting a small version of the original concept in my backyard. When the location changed I used the format of the original painting you can see here: akstudio.smugmug.com/San-Francisco-Beautiful/i-JmMPqPX/A

The site included some doors and a window, plus the addition of a utility building so I modified it and this is how the final came out. akstudio.smugmug.com/Portola-Longview-Mural/i-CFkJGFd/A It complements the other Portola Mural I painted down the street at grocery Outlet looing the opposite direction towards McLaren Park 4 years ago which has more people and landmarkshttps://akstudio.smugmug.com/Portola-Longview-Mural/i-zSjwHhT/A

I took some artistic liberty to show gardens, orchards, and chickens in people’s backyards to reiterate The Portola’s recent declaration as The Garden District reflecting the billboard across the street akstudio.smugmug.com/Portola-Longview-Mural/i-s45xSGK/A

It had a history of growing flowers and produce which eventually led to the Alemany Farmer’s Market for locals to sell produce from their “Victory Gardens”. It’s an idealized urban-agriculture utopia illustrating the Portola as the urban food producer it was in the past and the dream that one day it could be again someday.

At one time there were many green houses and nurseries, the last remaining ones located at 770 Woosley. Locals organized a couple of years ago to try and preserve the Garden District’s agricultural history, even though it was recently sold to a developer. You can find more about and get involved in ongoing efforts to repurpose it as a community garden space directed towards urban-agriculture, community, and education here: www.friendsof770.com/

It was an afterthought to add critters like racoons, possums, skunks, and coyotes which most people can relate to seeing in their backyards. While volunteering with the Portola Garden Club Lisa learned that there used to be vineyards where the freeway is now and many of the Italian families in the neighborhood would make their own wine, so she added some grape vines. The mural is visible from a distance, but there are also many interesting details up close. Here are some of the details: akstudio.smugmug.com/Portola-long-View-Mural-details/

Last, but certainly not least, I’d like to thank The Portola Neighborhood Association, especially Lia Smith, the project manager, and Alexander Hobbs with whom I served with on the Arts and Beautification committee for 4 years. Many thanks to the building owner Leslie Donahue, Amr the owner of San Bruno Coin Launderland, as well as Paul Vegas the day manager. Special thanks to the Denise Deiloh akstudio.smugmug.com/Portola-Longview-Mural/i-FDHhS7Q/A Nathalie Fabri akstudio.smugmug.com/Portola-Longview-Mural/i-Cf3sgMW/A , and Lisa Balsamo Magruder akstudio.smugmug.com/Portola-Longview-Mural/i-3tcDqbw/A who helped with the painting and my son Vladimir for priming the wall and setting up my scaffoldinghttps://akstudio.smugmug.com/Portola-Longview-Mural/i-fLp6X3X/A Their assistance allowed me to go into more detail now that the mural is at eye level and I will be forever grateful. Located at Providence Park Hospital, Novi, Michigan

Tucked amid the high-rises of San Francisco’s Cathedral Hill, this low-slung mid-century structure offers a burst of whimsy and artistic charm. While its concrete columns and rhythmic vertical lines speak the language of 1960s institutional architecture, the real scene-stealer is the expansive mural wrapping the building’s west-facing wall. A giant bear, rendered in warm earth tones, gazes at a monarch butterfly—surrounded by painted wildflowers, birds, and bees in flight. It’s a tender, almost folkloric vision that turns a utilitarian structure into a canvas for nature and narrative.

The building itself—likely a former community center, school, or spiritual space—features repeating V-shaped roof gables that give it a unique, sawtooth profile. These angular lines are softened by the naturalistic mural and encircling greenery, creating a dynamic juxtaposition of geometry and organic subject matter.

This stretch of Geary Boulevard, between civic institutions and residential towers, isn’t always known for beauty—but this mural adds a vital sense of play and purpose. Street art has increasingly become part of San Francisco’s architectural landscape, and this bear mural is a quiet triumph. It celebrates California’s ecological identity and hints at the gentle resilience of the city itself.

Whether you stumble upon it during a walk through the Western Addition or seek it out as a photography stop, this mural is a heartwarming reminder that even the most ordinary buildings can be elevated into something extraordinary.

This looks so cool you guys! I wish you could all come over and see it :)

This is not the frame btw, but the mounting board painted black in order to photograph it. The frame rises above the mosaic to try and help protect it a bit, but I was afraid that it may cast shadows during picture taking.

The frame isn't actually attached yet, that will happen on site tomorrow afternoon. But this is the finished product :)
