It's always nice to see these mergansers when I'm in Anchorage but they don't get too close. I hope to see the males as well but haven't yet. I love their serrated bill, definitely designed to grab onto something and not let go!

Melanitis leda, the common evening brown, is a common species of butterfly found flying at dusk. The flight of this species is erratic. They are found in Africa, South Asia and South-east Asia extending to parts of Australia.

Their diet is primarily carnivorous, consisting of insects, larvae, fresh water crabs, small reptiles, and small rodents.

I guess the male polyommatus icarus had a lek in August. There were 5 or 6 of them on a rather small spot near one of the trees.

The common moorhen lives around well-vegetated marshes, ponds, canals and other wetlands. They gives a wide range of gargling calls and will emit loud hisses when threatened. This species will consume a wide variety of vegetable material and small aquatic creatures. They forage beside or in the water, sometimes walking on lilypads or upending in the water to feed. They are often secretive, but can become tame in some areas. Despite loss of habitat in parts of its range, the common moorhen remains plentiful and widespread.
