It's always nice to see these mergansers when I'm in Anchorage but they don't get too close. I hope to see the males as well but haven't yet. I love their serrated bill, definitely designed to grab onto something and not let go!

Thanks for the visit guys.

Соловей южный (западный).

I guess the male polyommatus icarus had a lek in August. There were 5 or 6 of them on a rather small spot near one of the trees.

Standing still long enough to get a portrait.

279) Common Moorhen

Common Moorhen, Swamp Chicken, Gallinula chloropus, Tiong Air

The common moorhen lives around well-vegetated marshes, ponds, canals and other wetlands. They gives a wide range of gargling calls and will emit loud hisses when threatened. This species will consume a wide variety of vegetable material and small aquatic creatures. They forage beside or in the water, sometimes walking on lilypads or upending in the water to feed. They are often secretive, but can become tame in some areas. Despite loss of habitat in parts of its range, the common moorhen remains plentiful and widespread.

Not so common for me...first time I have seen one...grab shot as he didn't stop for long and would not open his wings...taken in evening heat haze at Kinneil lagoon...camera settings were for B.I F!
