Beating the Commodity Trap: How to Maximize Your Competitive Position and Increase Your Pricing Power
Author: Richard A. D'Aveni
Publication Date: January 1, 2010
Description: Commoditization-a virulent form of hypercompetition-is destroying markets, disrupting industries, and shuttering long-successful firms. Conventional wisdom says the best way to combat commoditization is differentiation. But differentiation is difficult and expensive to implement, and keeps you ahead of the pack only temporarily.
In Beating the Commodity Trap, Richard D'Aveni provides a radical new framework for fighting back. Drawing on an in-depth study of more than thirty industries, the author provides a tool for diagnosing your competitive position and shows how to strengthen it while also boosting your pricing power-by destroying the commoditization trap confronting you, escaping it, or turning it to your advantage.
Author Bio: Richard A. D'Aveni is Professor of Strategic Management at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College. The Times of London named him one of the top fifty thinkers in management.

We Monks do have a taste for kitsch and for "found objects" and ephemera. We even have a set of pictures on Flickr with that name, and when we stumbled upon the current Pascale Marthine Tayou show at the Serpentine Sackler Gallery, in Hyde Park London, we both responded positively.
Confirming Monk philosophy, we dare speculate that Pascale has found and offered beauty and joy and relevance in everyday colourful bulk issue fast food plastic straws, pipes and bags and bottles.
The theme of the show is artfully “suggested” and not hammered home; allowing the meaning and the connections between each motif to sink-in without fuss or pretension.
Those art lovers who lined up to see and pay to see Damien Hirst’s diamond skull in order to find the meaning of life, should consider staying away.
Pascale’s Visitors will not be required to pay for that privilege and will not fail to register his polemic before they find the exit.
Joy indulged, message delivered.
Pascale describes his installation as "deceitful";
I would add, knowingly so.

More rare than albinism, a four leaf clover is sure to bring good luck. Discovered in a renegade clover patch off the streets of Santa Maria, Brazil, this biological oddity is housed in a self made contact paper laminate. Measures slightly smaller than a credit card, for optimal portability. It would be the acme of genius to acquire such a charm.
The described four leaf clover in not up for bid. Up for bid is an original photograph of said clover by artist, Erik Dalzen. The photograph could maybe bring good luck too. The photograph measures 8x10 inches. Limited Edition. Signed, numbered (1/10), and dated on the back.
Bidding open until 10.30.2008 11:13:33 PDT - Get lucky
