Alberta’s Health Minister Adriana LaGrange announced, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Camrose, AB on Monday, March 31, 2025, funding to support health capital projects in rural communities.

Alberta’s government is investing about $330 million over three years to support health capital projects in rural communities across the province.

Alberta’s government is committed to providing the highest quality of health care services for every Albertan, no matter where they live in the province, and this includes making historic investments in rural health care facilities.

To further these goals, Budget 2025’s new Rural Hospital Enhancement Program will improve rural health care facilities to better address rural health challenges and provide greater access to essential health services. If passed, Budget 2025 will provide $15 million to support project planning, which includes conducting facility and functional assessments of rural hospitals to determine what capital planning solutions and services are required to maximize each facility’s potential and better meet the needs of rural communities.

frames and enabling broken coral fragments to grow and form

new healthy colonies.

Why this ambitious project is important:

• Coral reefs act as key feeding and breeding grounds for

a plethora of marine life. They are the main reason why

the Maldivian underwater life is so unique and a treasure

for snorkelers and divers.

• This project improves the quality of corals and fishes in

the House Reef.

• It also guarantees an alternative income to the B.

Fulhadhoo Island people as they make the frames used

to grow coral fragments.

• Coral reefs are also a place where scientists are still

discovering new molecules. Those findings are used to

uncover new cures against cancer and HIV.

• Coral reefs are a hope for the Maldives to slow down the

rise of sea level and protect the existence of the 1,192

islands.

ShelterBox has committed emergency shelter for up to 2,000 families in Kenya as the worst drought in 60 years continues to cause chaos throughout the region.

ShelterBox Response Team (SRT) members Peter Pearce (AU) and Ingrid Criddle (UK) have been working in conjunction with UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) to assess the most effective way ShelterBox can help.

Huge numbers of refugees continue to flee to Kenya from Somali as drought and famine continue. According to OCHA (Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs) there are more than 11 million people in need of humanitarian assistance throughout the Horn of Africa. As well as Kenya, ShelterBox has a response team operating in Ethiopia and both teams will be supporting the relief effort in whatever way possible.

Speaking en route to Dadaab, the refugee camp 100 kilometers from the Kenya-Somalia border, SRT member Ingrid Criddle said aid from ShelterBox will be used to help the most vulnerable families.

‘There’s an overwhelming need throughout the region and our number one priority is to deliver emergency shelter to the most vulnerable groups,’ she said. ‘We’re working incredibly closely with the UN as multi-agency collaboration is vital to ensuring the most effective response to this growing humanitarian crisis.’

The refugee camps in Dadaab were originally designed to accommodate up to 90,000 refugees but according to the latest figures there are now close to 400,000 people living in and around the three camps. OCHA states that as of July 24 there were 28,000 refugees residing outside the camps and awaiting registration.

John Leach, ShelterBox Head of Operations, added: ‘This crisis demands a global response from the humanitarian community. Where our teams are operating, in Kenya and Ethiopia, we’re seeing great examples of inter-agency cooperation.

One of the fundamental responsibilities of higher education is to provide open and equal opportunities for students to learn, succeed, and positively contribute to their local, national, and global societies. Great strides are being made in increasing educational access, retention completion, and success, yet there is still work to be done particularly for students from disadvantaged or marginalized groups. Unprecedented shifts in migration patterns are causing demographic changes around the world. Additionally, governments, societies, and higher education institutions are increasingly recognizing the need and responsibility to create legal and institutional frameworks for providing more and better opportunities for people from historically marginalized groups to gain access and achieve success at the university level.

From South Africa’s “Historically Disadvantaged Institutions,” to Brazil’s “Law of Social Quotas,” and a long tradition of “Minority Serving Institutions” in the United States, just to name a few, higher education institutions committed to providing educational opportunities for local communities marginalized along ethnic, racial, religious or other lines can be found on every continent. What’s more, in light of shifting demographics and the growing focus on educational opportunity and access, increasing numbers of colleges and universities will be serving students from marginalized groups. For too long, institutions serving students at the margins have operated in a vacuum, failing to collaborate across institutional types and across nations. This Salzburg session will bring together leaders from institutions serving marginalized populations with policy makers and researchers to develop a platform for finding solutions to these institutions’ common challenges and capitalizing on their strengths.

This program is being designed and implemented in partnership with the recently launched Center for Minority Serving Institutions at the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education and with Educational Testing Service. From 2010 to 2012, Salzburg Global and Educational Testing Service collaborated on a series of sessions on “Optimizing Talent: Closing Educational and Social Mobility Gaps Worldwide.”
