THE FIVE PILLARS OF ISLAM
The central duty of all Muslims is to maintain the commitment to the faith known as the five pillars of Islam.
1-The Profession of Faith (shahada), "la ilaha illa'llah muhammadun rasulu'llah" (There is no God but Allah: Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah). Once this belief is professed, a person is technically a Muslim.
2-Prayer to be repeated five times a day: dawn, noon, midafternoon, sunset, nightfall. Prayer, which follows an established ritual, is always performed facing toward Mecca.
There is public prayer in the mosque on Friday (for the Mosque, see case to right).
3-Almsgiving takes two forms: voluntary, as an act of love and pity; obligatory, as a tithe to allow the state to maintain religious and related institutions.
4-Fasting (sawm) occurs during Ramadan, the ninth month of the lunar year. All food and drink are forbidden from sunrise to sunset. Each month begins with the appearance of the new moon.
5-Pilgrimage (hajj) should be made at least once in a life-time, if possible. The individual pilgrim will visit Mecca to perform requisite obeisance at the Kaabah.
"Behold! The first sanctuary given for mankind was that at Mecca, a blessed place, a guidance to the people..."
The Koran, Sura 3:96
МЕССА
This scene shows Mecca during the time of haji, or pilgrimage, which begins on the first day of Shawwäl, the tenth Muslim month. Muslim calendar months run from new moon to new moon; here a waning crescent moon has risen as dawn breaks in the east. In the foreground stands the Grand Mosque, focal point of the Muslim faith, at whose center is the Kaaba shrouded in black and gold cloth (kiswah-see case to left). At left, pilgrims move toward Mina and the Plain of Arafat. Surrounded by the hills and deserts of Arabia, Mecca has been a sacred area for at least 4,000 years. The present mosque was built by the Royal Government of Saudi Arabia.
The Hajj (Pilgrimage)
The annual 70-day period for pilgrimage to Mecca has great meaning for Muslims. Tradition and piety dictate each step after arrival. Men wear a simple seamless garment ihram); women go unveiled but cover the head. No arguments may occur, nor may hair or nails be trimmed. During the ten days pilgrims spend in or near Mecca, each action has specific symbolic significance Within the Sacred Mosque, the pilgrim circles seven times in greeting (tawaf) around the Kaaba, established by Abraham as the House of God. A small rock set in silver at the east corner is all that remains oi Abraham's building, but it lies at the heart of Islam. Pilgrims touching it feel blessed. They can also drink at the nearby Well of Zamzam, where God gave water to Hagar and bet son Ishmael. The long projecting gallery partly visible at left rear of the Sacred Mosque is traversed seven times to reenact Hagar's desperate search for water (sa'y) between the hills of Marwah (north) and Safa (south).
On the eighth day after arrival in Mecca, pilgrims go to Mina (beyond the hills at center), where they rest to prepare for the grueling rite of "standing" (wuquf) held on the Plain of Arafat (in the distance, right). Here, on the ninth day, from noon to sunset, pilgrims pray around the Mount of Mercy. At this place Muhammad, mounted on a camel, gave his last sermon, and there the pilgrim stands before God.
That night pilgrims return toward Mina but stop for the night at Muzdalifah (near Mina on the east). Next day they carry pebbles back to Mina and stone three pillars representing evil. This act symbolizes the Muslim's struggle against evil. Then animals are sacrificed in memory of Ishmael's deliverance.
Pilgrims return to the Kaaba and circle it in farewell.
