After we left Mowich Lake Campground, my buddy and I decided to take the Spray Park trail instead of the Wonderland Trail Proper. I read in Bette Filley's book, "Discovering The Wonders of the Wonderland Trail" that Spray Park offers some magnificent views of Rainier whereas the Wonderland Trail is more forested and covered. The only catch is that if it's bad weather, Spray Park is absolutely miserable as there is no cover and it's the highest point on the trail. I was thrilled to be able to go to Alaska for some extended backpacking! A good buddy of mine and myself spent 17 days backing and traveling throughout different parks in Alaska. From ridge trails and Denali National Park (formerly McKinley National Park) to Kennicot and Wrangel-St. Elias, we covered a lot of ground in a short time!
I took this ultra-wide photo of Mount Denali at the top of the first steep climb on the Kesugi Ridge Trail! At this point in the day some clouds moved in that provided a really cool and dramatic setting! I love the variations of clouds in the sky especially! This trail is located in Denali State Park which is just an hour or two south of Denali National Park! This trail offered some fantastic views of Mt. Denali and the surrounding mountains, forests and meadows! We spent 2 nights on this trail and it was a lot of fun! This is a close up photo of abandoned farming equipment on the West Rim Trailin Zion National Park. This was near or on our way to the Lava Point Overlook. I thought it was so strange that this abandoned piece of farming equipment was still here. I'm not sure weather to call it a tractor, a cart, a tiller or a plow but I do wonder at it's story! Who left it behind and why? What did they farm with it and what was life like during the time of it's use? I'm imagining and hoping it was simpler life (yet probably more difficult life speaking of a labor intensive period of time). I hoping it was used in a time where people were more connected to the land and beauty around them in the every day!

Suspended glass(?) tubes decor in the unfinished refurbishment of the former 'The Australia on Collins' site, and now partially open as St.Collins Lane (a multi-level series of high-end retailing arcades and a food level), on Collins Street, Melbourne, Australia.

The current sad state of this uncompleted prime location building's renovations has seen all upper floors and basement emptied of retailers in past recent years with only a few remaining on the ground floor walkthrough between Collins Street and Little Collins Streets.

When I was visiting friends in Virginia this past summer we made it a point to see some of the historical sites in the area. One of which included the Mariner's Museum. This is an image of 1 of the 4 Lion Statues on the bridge, which is really a dam that creates Lake Maury and provides a great view of the James River.

During our trip to Alaska, my buddy and I made a visit to Denali National Park. We spent some time in the backcountry where their are no trails and no man made markers of any kind. We had a map and a compass to navigate where we wanted to go. I must say hiking in Denali National Park was some of the hardest hiking I have ever done in my life! I always knew that trails made it easier but I never realized just how much easier! I am so thankful for people who work and volunteer to maintain trails in all our parks! That said, I'm also very thankful for the remoteness and untouched land in Denali National Park, Alaska. It has a different feel and honestly made me appreciate what we do have. Backpacking in Alaska made me realize a few things: 1) Things will simply take as long as they take and you can't rush them. 2) I appreciate civilization more and I understand why people "settle down".
