The Commando Memorial in Lochaber, Scotland, is dedicated to the men of the original British Commando Forces raised during World War II. it overlooks the training areas of the Commando Training Depot established in 1942 at Achnacarry, Scotland, following a request from the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, for a force that could carry out raids in occupied Europe. The ranks were filled initially from volunteers from within the British Armed forces as well as foreign volunteers from occupied countries. After WWII, the Commando’s were disbanded but the modern Royal Marine Commandos, Parachute Regiment, Special Air Service, British Army commandos and the Special Boat Service trace their origins to the Commandos. Their legacy also extends to a number of mainland European and North American special forces.

Well, guess that's a wrap for 2018! Happy new year y'all, and thanks a lot for staying with me, even though I haven't been active recently. Hopefully I can figure something out (I got some more customs to work on).
This memorial is at Spean Bridge in Lochaber and looks across at Ben Nevis. It is for the commandos in the Second World War very poignant to be next to it.
Heading north to the hills for a weekend the light started to change, so when we passed Spean Bridge it was a no brainer when we decided to stop at the Commando Memorial.
This sculpture was erected in 1951 as a memorial to the WW11 commandos who had trained nearby. As can be seen it holds a superb location overlooking a fabulous corner of Lochaber. Out of view to the left is the Ben Nevis range, however with the sun setting to the west and this profile of the memorial I chose this view instead.
Whatever time of the day and regardless of the prevailing weather The Commando Monument just above Spean Bridge offers rewarding photographic opportunities.
Now don't get me wrong I like the Command, BUT in Yellow!
Mind you the other guy's shirt takes some beating.
In my opinion a Commando should be black with gold pin striping.

I'm starting a new project , when I built only the leg , in the end I'll have to give him a lot of weapons , which explains the command name taken from commandos film.

I'm not sure many understand the significance of the Commando memorial at Spean Bridge. "Commandos" was not even a British concept. But the origins of what would become the British Commandos, the Royal Marines lie within these lands.
During the Boer War in South Africa, the British Empire was fighting Dutch colonialists, an irregular army of Boers largely made up of Dutch farmers. The Boers developed a tactic to ride on horseback into British camps at night, shoot everyone up and disappear into the night as fast as they arrived. The Dutch called these units, "Kommandos". The British decided to form a force to counter them and formed The Lovat Scouts. This was largely recruited from the Highlanders on the Scottish Estates, tough, hardy men who could shoot well and were used to living and toiling in a harsh landscape. Many were deer stalkers and ghillies, expert marksmen, highly competent in reading the land, moving stealthily, camouflage artists and efficient killers. Gradually the Lovat Scouts were merged into other regiments and lost their identify in the lull between the First and Second World wars. When the British Expeditionary force was defeated in France and retreated from Dunkirk, it was Winston Churchill who ordered that a new force should be formed to go and raid Nazi forces in mainland Europe. The new troops would be called Commandos. And to train them they sent them to training camps in the Highlands of Scotland to train in the same harsh landscapes the Lovat Scouts originally came from.
And so many shooting lodges in Lochaber were requisitioned for Commando training. With a sparce population many areas permitted live firing, so that there are houses not far from where I live that have bullet holes in them, and bullet cases can easily be found in some areas.. Achnacarry was the first training centre, the reason why the Commando memorial is where it is, not far away. SOE (Special Operations Executive) and spies were also trained in this same region.
Occasionally it has crossed my mind: I wonder if they still use our area for the training of spies and special forces without informing the local population, but I've never come across any commandos hiding under a bracken bivouac, so far.

I was working in Fort William on Friday and had time to spare on the journey down so stopped to be a tourist for a couple of minutes.
I should have gone over to check, but looking at this image I cannot imagine why the seat is pointing in the direction it does; answers on a postcard please.
It was a grey old day so I thought a B&W conversion might work?

Didn't expect to find this guy today.
What a spectacular figure. My only complaint is that his impressive arsenal should have also included a shotgun and uzi.

EXERCISE GREEN DAGGER 19.1
Pictured: Army Commandos and Royal Marines in support of a company level advance to contact exercise.
As part of their Force Generation process and wider preparation for Lead Commando Group, 45 Commando Royal Marines deployed to America during Exercise Green Dagger. The exercise involved Live Fire Tactical Training (LFTT) and a Force of Force (FEX) exercise with two United States Marine Corps (USMC) Battle Groups (BG), conducted on an impressively large village complex. During the exercise 45 Cdo were stationed at Camp Wilson, located on the Marine Air Ground Combat Centre, a huge training complex of approx 100 square kilometres in the Mojave Desert. It was a great opportunity for the Commandos to meet and train with their American counterparts.
The Commando Memorial is a monument dedicated to the men of the original British Commando Forces raised during World War II. Situated around a mile from Spean Bridge village, it overlooks the training areas of the Commando Training Depot established in 1942 at Achnacarry Castle. Unveiled in 1952 by the Queen Mother, it has become one of the United Kingdom's best-known monuments, both as a war memorial and as a tourist attraction offering views of Ben Nevis and Aonach Mòr.

Curtiss C-46R Commando (c/n 273/CK250)
Everts Air Fuel
Fairbanks-International (FAI/PAFA)
24 June 1986
Delivered to the USAF as a C-46A in 1945 shortly before the end of WWII, this Commando soon became surplus, and was sold to the civil market. Circa 1958 it was converted to a C-46R, and after countless operators, it was eventually registered as N7848B, and leased by Everts Air Fuel in 1985.
It was seen at its base, titleless and in an all-silver finish, ready to be towed to the hangar after arriving on a flight earlier in the day.
The Commando continued with Everts delivering fuel to remote communities not linked to the state road system, and recent photos suggest that it is still active with Everts Air Fuel, now named 'Dumbo' and based at Kenai, and turning a proud 80 this year!
I completed zondkar commandos providing it to many varieties of weapons to keep it true to the character.
