Grateful Dead Comix

Are you a Dead-Head?
No, no, no; I’m not trying to insult any of you. Those in the know will recognize that “Dead-Head” is a nickname borne with pride by those who are big fans of the rock group “The Grateful Dead”. Aside from that fact, I know very little about the group.
But that didn’t stop me from sitting down with a copy of “Grateful Dead Comix”. This slick, full-colored, magazine-sized comic book is composed of four “chapters”. Each chapter does nothing more than illustrate the lyrics to a different Grateful Dead song.
Far and away, the most satisfying of these is the first installment, adapted and illustrated by Timothy Truman. The song adapted is “Dire Wolf”. As interpreted by Truman, it becomes almost a horror story, as an isolated man faces his worst nightmare. It is an extremely effective blend of lyrics and artwork.
The remaining three adaptations are much less enjoyable, if for no other reason than that they are all less well drawn than the first. The best of these is cartoonist Nina Paley’s Looney-Tunes looking adaptation of the band’s version of “Casey Jones”.
Yet the most clever bit of all may simply be the note on the contents page, informing us that the book is “printed on recycled paper with soya inks…the interior of this comic book can be recycled again. And with its high fiber content and soybean ink, this is probably a very tasty product if stir-fried with a little tarragon and basil. Maybe some hot sauce too”.
Bottom line: If you aren’t a bit fan of the band … this book is better off dead than read.
“Grateful Dead Comix” is published by Kitchen Sink Press, and sells for $4.95 in comic book specialty stores.
