It's July 27th (Wednesday), which means that despite the heat, we're gearing up on the heavy artillery as we cover our ground-game. Two Jiu Jitsu gis at my disposal in the event that I shred one of them.

That gym has got to be at least 115 degrees right now.

It's while since I have taken any macros. But the Smile on Saturday's theme of pawns was so tempting, as was the directional sunlight this morning :)

I thought about doing this in monochrome (far behind on that 100x project!) but decided against it. Might try with some of the other shots from the batch...

Thank you for taking the time to look. I hope you enjoy the image. Happy Smile on Saturday :)

[Handheld in bright oblique sunlight (tilted the board too). Going for repetition in the composition and minimal focus to create spots of interest (so too the diagonals - with the shadows cunningly vertical :) ).

Developed in Capture One to retrieve the blown-out highlights from the raw and to get rid of some purple/cyan fringing.

Sharpened in Affinity with Unsharp Mask and a soft dark vignette to keep us on the board :)]

Pawns.

I have this theory that totally blurred pictures are a much underrated genre of photography. Like all theories it needs extensive testing :)

So far so good. I am less convinced about the peer review though...

Another one from the set last Saturday, deliberately unfocused (honestly... I worked out how to change it to manual focus. Eventually... :) ).

The real question, of course, is is this a picture of pawns, or is it a picture of the light around pawns? Answers on a postcard (preferably with a sizeable cheque attached, but I'm not fussy - any sized cheque is good...).

Thank you for taking the time to look. I hope you enjoy the image. Happy Thursday Monochrome, and also MBT :)

Surma men like to fight with long sticks in a game called Donga. It is usually a way to solve old problems between the men of different villages. The 3m long sticks can hurt the men, but the more they have blood, the more they are brave according to the tribe elders. During the Donga i saw last october, the fights were stopped as one of the warrior was seriously wounded on a kidney.

This is a re-edit of one of my favorite boxing pictures. I originally edited this photo in the now defunct Aperture and Nik's Silver Efex Pro. This version was done entirely in LR, and obviously, in color.

An eight round lightweight attraction on April 28, 2017 featured Aidarr Sharbiayev, Miami, Florida by way of Almaty, Kazakhstan (6-0, 4 KOs) versus Orlando Rizo, Managua, Nicaragua (19-10, 11 KOs). Despite Rizo’s record, he was clearly out classed by Sharbiayev, being knocked down twice in the second round, and again in the fourth, on the way to a knock out 28 seconds into the seventh round. Rizo has now dropped four in a row, three by KO. Sharbiayev was very strong off his jab, and maybe a name to look out for in the future.

WMC Singapore Pro Series 3

One day, at the end of December, a client came to me for a photo shoot and said "I don't have a New Year's mood"...

I asked how the "New Year's" mood differs from any other? After thinking a little, he said that he was probably waiting for someone to come and organize everything, like his parents did in childhood. To which I replied that we ourselves are responsible for our mood, for the holiday, actions…

Is that right? We are adults, and everything is in our hands. No need to wait, you need to act.

That's when my client came to life...

We were fooling around on the set like children, the client threw streamers, tried on different costumes, masks, improvised and was not afraid to seem ridiculous! Laughed 😂 to tears and had a great time! And the shots " came out just WOW, crazy!

I can say with full confidence that after the photo shoot held then, there was one more person in the world with a New Year's mood.

Do you want the same?

With the rise of UFC these days, combat sports have never been more popular. But like all true martial arts (particularly those influenced by Asian disciplines) the aim is not to punish your opponent, but to develop resilience and self-discipline.
