It's a long hike up to the Nacamuli hut but it's a beautiful one. The Comba d'Oren almost feels like a lost valley. Granted, it was early in the season but we hardly saw a soul on our way up, and at the hut, we discovered we were the only guests that night.

Santa Comba de Bande is a pre-Romanesque church from the Visigothic period that belonged to a monastery. It was probably built around 675. The church is dedicated to St Columba of Sens, who - according to legend - suffered martyrdom during the persecution of Christians in the French town of Sens. St Columba has been venerated in Spain since the 7th century. According to a cartulary, the Asturian King Alfonso III (866-910) ordered the repopulation of these areas around 872. In this context, lands are mentioned with "very old churches dedicated to the Virgin and Martyr Columba".
Restoration work was carried out in 1932. This uncovered the foundations of square annexes that adjoined the church to the north and south. These extensions, only one of which is preserved on the northern transept, created a rectangle measuring 12 × 16 metres, from which only the apse protruded. Pilgrims or travellers were presumably accommodated in the western extensions, while the two eastern ones, which only had access to the church, were probably used as monks' cells.

On the day I took this shot I was walking aimlessly in the Laghi di Comba area in the Orco Valley (Piemonte, Italy) when, as it sometimes happens with these magnificent birds, I saw a huge shadow passing by on the ground. I immediately raised my eyes and there it was, as close as I had ever seen one (the shot is taken at 157 mm with a Canon 7d Mark II and it's only slightly cropped horizontally).
I think these kind of shots, when the camera is pointing up towards the sky, are not as interesting as those that depict the subject in its natural environment. Nevertheless it was exciting to watch this young bearded vulture gently gliding above my head before diving down towards the bottom of the valley.
Meter-gauge Dão line, Santa Comba Dão station, 11 November 1970. The meter-gauge Dão line interfaced here with the Iberian-gauge Beira Alta line. From here, the Dão line used to run to Viseu where it interfaced with the Vouga network all the way to Sernada.

The Mayotte maki, also called ankoumba in kibouchi (Malagasy of Mayotte) or comba in shimaore, is a lemurate primate considered as a variety of the tawny lemur ("eulemur fulvus") from Madagascar, or as one of its subspecies ("eulemur fulvus mayottensis", Schlegel, 1866). It lives on the islands of Mayotte and Anjouan in the Comoros archipelago, where it is said to have been introduced by humans from Madagascar.
