A lot of history on Detroit’s southwest side. Hovering over the Rouge River not too far from the the iconic Ford River Rouge Plant in Dearborn. In the recent years, a small play area was built surrounding the drawbridge, some urban blight still surrounds the area, but much of the abandoned homes have been razed, and the land that they once sat on, some of it had been used for agriculture bringing some of its former beauty back to the surface prior to the population boom it once had from well-over 100 years ago.

The comapny Dolata was established in 1998, but it wasn't until 2018 that they expanded to the railway. They started in Dąbrowa (near Poznań) as a gravel/aggregates mine and sorting facility. Now they also do transports and produce concrete. The name comes from the company owner - Agnieszka Dolata.
The expansion to the rails happened (afaik) in 2018 and BR232-789 was the first class 232 locomotive to receive Dolata's black and silver livery. The company currently has a railway operations base in Szamotuły (also near Poznań), where they repair their sizeable fleet, now consisting of a couple of 232 and TEM2 locomotives (additionally - they own an ex-PKP ST44 locomotive, but there are no plans of bringing it back to life).
On a foggy November morning, while visiting my family in Rokietnica, I made my way to the local railway station and snapped this picture of Dolata's first 232 at the aggregate siding near the station. Since then, the station has had a substantial overhaul and the siding has ceased existing.

During my week-long visit, the friends I met pointed me to several cool spots to visit in Silesiam where I'm almost guaranteed to see some traffic. And so, on the second try, I ended up near the steel mill Ferrum located in Katowice Zawodzie.
This steel mill, originally founded by a Berlin-based comapny of machinery production Rhein & Co in 1874, only got its name Ferrum after it merged with the Jakob steelworks (located in direct proximity) in the year 1890. The plant gained a lot of traction 10 years later after introducing a new way of welding steel pipes using syngas, which made them way more durable. This upgrade made the steel plant open to the worldwide market with its flagship product and the pipes were exported all the way to Japan and Peru (source: Wikipedia).
Pipes are still the main product of this plant to this day and a lot of shunting is needed to keep the production going. The network of sidings in this industrial area is not very long (around 3,5km of tracks in total, and even that is a big stretch) however it is almost unbelievably complicated, seriously - check it out on google maps.
Every half an hour or so, SM42-2616, the only locomotive in this factory, has to first go to an isolated part of the plant located in the south, pick up 2 loaded wagons (because no more than that fits on the siding) and travel to the station Katowice Zawodzie thereby changing the direction of travel a whole three times!!!
It then leaves the loaded wagons on one of two tracks designated for dropoff and pickup by other railway operators, and shunts around to get two empty wagons for loadup at the southern part of the plant, once again changing the direction thrice. And all this hustle for just 2 wagons!
Due to the fact that most of the facility is fenced, there are only two viable spots fo photographing the train. I sadly wasn't able to make it to the railway crossing with Porcelanowa street and this is the only shot I got. Here SM42-2616 is seen transporting two empty wagons for loadup with pipes on a very dark, gloomy and extremely cold, yet snowless winter evening. On the right side - an old banner, proudly displaying the name of the steelworks - Ferrum S.A.

It is always great to have Brunch at Faith & Flowers, but with this a comapny, it is really always a good time!

"Arctic Rider" w upalny dzień w środkowych Niemczech mija luzem okolice miejscowości Sierße podążając w kierunku Lehrte.
Jest to jedna z kilku najładniejszych oklein na lokomotywach Stadler Eurodual we flocie przewoźnika HSL GmbH. Kolejne tematyczne to "Desert Rider", "Jubilee Rider". Flota posiada także pojazd w nowoczesnej formie firmowego malowania brązowo - pomarańczowego, jednak ta okleina chyba nie otrzymała branżowego miana.

"Arctic Rider" on hot day in middle Germany pass solo a Sierße town area during ride towards Lehrte.
It is one from few the most beautiful veneers on Stadler Eurodual vehicles in HSL GmbH company fleet. Next are named "Desert Rider", "Jubilee Rider". The last is modern version of comapny colors: brown - orange but I don't know that this veneer received any name.
Went for a little stroll along the beach this morning … tiz lovely to feel and breath the fresh air :)

This is an 0 gauge locomotive with a diecast body, it is really heavy and superbly made by the French comapny JEP. They were in business from 1899 to 1965 and made beautiful models primarily of the SNCF.

D&S 107 switches out the next days 461, which it'll pull. One of the signs of the changing times on the D&S the last several years has been the introduction of road diesels-electrics. After what I'll politely call a "mistake" with 2 custom made engines for them, D&S decided to go for a more proven model when they announced that they were acquiring 4 DL535E's from the White Pass & Yukon Route. Ordered by the White Pass in 1969, the first 7 of the 10 started being built at ALCO's Schenectady Works before the comapny folded & were sent to their Montreal Locomotive Works subsidiary. Still sporting the classic green & yellow scheme of the White Pass, this engine serves as a sign of the changing times that'll allow the D&S to continue to operate & also give us railfans a chance to now see these engines in action now without having to go to Alaska. 9-3-21

One of several mine train trestles that cross and re-cross the small arroyo that meanders from one side of narrow Sego canyon in the five miles to the mine sight. The Ballard & Thompson Railroad, a spur from the Denver and Rio Grande Western was built by the founders of Sego Ghost Town to transport the coal and crossed the arroyo 13 times. It was the cost of maintaining these trestles that caused the final demise of Sego Ghost Town (aka Ballard and Nelsen) sometime in the early 1950's.
In the 1650s three islands were constructed on the borders of Het IJ, Amsterdam's famous river connected then to the Zuyderzee and onwards to the World's Seas lapping at the coasts of all continents. The great Dutch fleets, such as that of the East Indies Trading Company (VOC), had many of their ships built at these islands; e.g. the VOC at Oosterburg. But also the other two - Kattenburg and Wittenburg - were known for their excellent worksmanship, such as the wharf owned by Jan Witheyn (1610-1662).
This kind of craftmanship obviously needed wood-taming implements such as axes or hatches - in Dutch: bijlen. And the men of these Eastern Islands were accordingly called Bijltjes, guys wielding axes... and not only for work. These areas were rough-and-ready regardless the great, austere Oosterkerk (East Church) erected in the seventeenth century on Wittenburg's southwestern perimeter. The islanders could also isolate themselves from the city proper by drawing up the access bridges. When they disagreed with the powers that be they were not easily quieted. For example, in 1787: the city regents had declared for the Patriots, the adherents of the French Revolution. The ships' carpenters were traditional, vocal and violent supporters of the Princes of Orange. A pitched battle ensued which has gone down in history as the Bijltjesoproer, the Hatchet Rebellion.
These Eastern Docklands have always had a rowdy even violent reputation. Even today it's not the quietest of Amsterdam areas, especially in the evening. But during the day it's a very pleasant and tranquil place to look around. Not least because of its little parks and monuments.
One of these is this lovely Autumnal Garden of the Windroosplein, 'Rose-of-the-Winds' Place. Beware: that's not a botanical name but rather designates the face of a compass giving the wind directions, a so-called Compass Rose. Quite appropriate for a shipbuilding history.
PS The pretty statuette - I would say twentieth century - was apparently recently placed. If anyone can tell me more about it... please!
