The earliest records of mining at Okel Tor date from the 1840s when the Okel Tor Silver, Lead & Copper Mine Co. was formed. At its peak 200 people worked here including women and children, though it was only the older boys that went underground.
The fortunes of the mine ebbed and flowed and when the price of tin and copper fell it was arsenic that became the most valuable product. Closure eventually came in the late 1880s and the mine was abandoned. It was some years before the machinery was removed and then a slow, steady decline as nature reclaimed the site.
In 1999 English Heritage (now Historic England) scheduled Okel Tor Mine as an Ancient Monument and, a few years later, UNESCO designated it as a World Heritage Site.
Since then some of the more important structures have been repaired to prevent further decay and an ongoing management plan will help preserve it for future generations.
The mine smithy and count house have been restored as holiday lets.

A lot of people have asked what comes next.
The answer? We don't know any better than you do.
I know that I met this amazing, funny, sweet person, and I'm completely wild over her. That I've had her in every minute of my life for the last week, and that every minute felt right. And that tomorrow everything changes.
After that?
I really can't say. I wish I knew. Really, we're taking it minute by minute and sometimes it feels like we're spinning out of control.
We say our strange goodbyes and go back to phonecalls and webcams - the technologies that once seemed fresh and exciting are a step backward; a step apart. It's going to be hard. I know that much.
I'm hoping a California trip is in the cards.
But I can only see as far as Monday. School begins. Xelia will be gone. We're left with memories and marks; a cold spot in the bed where someone is missing.

Due to the destruction of most of the ancient city during 1917 revolution and, later, to the 1966 earthquake, little remains of Tashkent's traditional architectural heritage. Tashkent is, however, rich in museums and Soviet-era monuments.
Telyashayakh Mosque (Khast Imam Mosque). It Contains the Uthman Qur'an, considered to be the oldest extant Qur'an in the world. Dating from 655 and stained with the blood of murdered caliph, Uthman, it was brought by Timur to Samarkand, seized by the Russians as a war trophy and taken to Saint Petersburg. It was returned to Uzbekistan in 1924.
The Othman Qur'an (also termed the Othmanic codex, Othmanic recension, Samarkand codex, Samarkand manuscript and Tashkent Qur'an), named for the third Caliph, Uthman ibn Affan, is a manuscripted copy of the Qur'an, kept at the Hast Imam library. Along with the Sana'a manuscripts, it is considered to be the oldest in the world.
This copy of the Qur'an is attributed to the third caliph Uthman. In 651, 19 years after the death of Muhammad, Uthman commissioned a committee to produce a standard copy of the text of Quran (see Origin and development of the Qur'an). Five of these original Qur'ans were sent to the major Muslim cities of the era, with Uthman keeping one for his own use in Medina. The only other surviving copy is said to be held in Topkapı Palace, in Turkey.
Uthman was succeeded by Ali, who took the Uthman Qur'an to Kufa, now in Iraq. When Tamerlane destroyed the area, he took the Qur'an to his capital, Samarkand, as a treasure. It remained there for four centuries until, in 1868, when the Russians invaded, captured the Qur'an and brought it back to the Imperial Library in St. Petersburg.
After the October Revolution, Vladimir Lenin, in an act of good will to the Muslims of Russia gave the Qur'an to the people of Ufa, Bashkortostan. After repeated appeals by the people of Turkestan ASSR, the Qur'an was returned to Central Asia, to Tashkent, in 1924, where it has since remained.
The parchment manuscript is currently held in the library of the Telyashayakh Mosque, in the old "Hast-Imam" (Khazrati Imom) area of Tashkent, Uzbekistan, close to the grave of Kaffal Shashi, a 10th-century Islamic scholar.
The manuscript is rather incomplete, only one third of the Qur'an survives. It begins in the middle of verse 7 of the second sura and ending abruptly at Surah 43.10. It has between eight and twelve lines to the page, is devoid of vocalisation and as such is very ancient.

The Baker Heritage Museum, is a great place to explore Baker County’s history with abundant artifacts from throughout the county and North East Oregon. You’ll also find a few surprises, including the story of Baker County Native Wally Byam who invented the Airstream trailer, Glow in the dark rocks that are part of the Cavin-Warfel rock and mineral collection, and a scale model of No Name City from the movie Paint Your Wagon, and a few more surprises you’ll just have to discover on your own.
This year's featured exhibit at the Baker Heritage Museum celebrates the 50th anniversary of the movie Paint Your Wagon, which was filmed on location in the Wallowa and Elkhorn mountains of Baker County. The exhibit includes the scale model of "No Name City" used by the producers, numerous local artifacts and memorabilia donated by local citizens and a large number of pieces on loan from Paramount Studios.

Dr. Elliot McGucken's Fine Art Landscape & Nature Photography for Los Angeles Gallery Show !
Will be busy printing and framing in nice large, matted formats and frames and museum glass! Five of these photos will be printed on 40" x 60" floating wall mounted metal sheets! I think I know which--will share photos of the photos hanging on the walls!
And I am mounting some on plexiglass/acryllic--front mounting them! Some I am printing on lossy fuji-crystal archival paper too, and then front mounting 40"x60" versions to plexiglass--will send photos!
The secret to HDR photography is that you want people to say, "Woe dude--that's unreal!" And not, "Dude--that's not real!" "Unreal" is the word they use when they're trying to figure out the photo--what makes it cool--is it a photo? Is it painted? How'd it come to be--how'd you bend the light that way? "That's not real," is what they say if you have the saturation/HDR/ etc. turned up too high. :)
Some (almost) final edits for my Los Angeles Gallery Show! Printing them on metallic paper at 13" x 19" and mounting and framing them on a 4mm 18x24 white mat and 2" dark wood frame. Also printing some 40" x 70" which is over three feet by five feet! Wish you all could come (and hang out with the goddesses)!

This is a shot taken during last week’s trip to Las Vegas; this is an image of the Bellagio lobby’s ceiling sculpture, Fiori di Como. The sculpture, which took two years to complete, was designed by artist Dale Chihuly and is made up of 2,000 hand-blown glass flower blossoms of all different colors, weighing 40,000 pounds. This amazing sight was something I’d seen several times before but hadn’t had the opportunity to shoot, so I was pretty pleased with how the images came out. I thought a close-up would make for a nice start to the Vegas series, so I hope you agree and enjoy!

The folks from 3M (the Post It Notes people) contacted me through Flickr more than a year after my 2006 Post It Notes car photos had become a phenomenon.
Michelle Gebbie, eMarketing Supervisor from 3M Office Supplies Division, was seeking permission from me to use the Post It Note Car photos in marketing materials for a contest that the photos had inspired.
I responded, asking her where the photos would be used and what their budget was. She responded saying that they would be used for 6 months on in-store displays, and that they would not pay more than it would cost for them to copy our car and take their own photos. I respectfully asked for a little more than that and she stopped returning emails.
They really did do a good job copying it, didn't they? Even Walt thought it was his own car. Now I am getting tons of comments and notes from people saying "I saw your photo at Staples" (or OfficeMax, Office Depot, etc.). Look at their YouTube video. Clearly they wanted people to see it in the store and think it was the same car they'd seen before on Flickr and YouTube.
