These magnificent columns stand at the entry to one of colonial architect John Lee Archer's finest buildings. Archer (1792-1852) is most famous for coming up with the basic design for the Ross Bridge (1836), which stonemason Daniel Herbert then set about turning into a masterpiece of symbolic design. I could have titled this "Memories of Max", but that would have been presumptuous. The great Australian photographer of the 20th century Max Dupain (1911-1992), although well known for his iconic Australian landscapes and beach scenes, was a superb architectural photographer. In 1963 he published a book for the National Trust on Georgian architecture in NSW and Tasmania. It is loaded with magnificent monochromes. Here's a link (not to promote the selling site), but to give you an opportunity to scan some of its pages that are displayed here. It's a wonderful collection of historic photographs:

These Corinthian columns form a major part of the portico of the Old Custom House (1885). If you enlarge this photograph you will see how intricate the architectural detail is and also some interesting shadow patterns on the ceiling.
These columns won't be at the Capitol when Barack Obama is sworn in, but they once were. They were raised up by slaves and working craftsmen and then burned by the British in 1814.
They now stand on a hillside just inside of Washington, D-C, a few dozen blocks east of Union Station. If you visit the city, you should see them at the National Arboretum.

Also known as Wren's Church (after it's architect, Sir Christopher Wren) St. Paul's Cathedral is a neo-classical marvel.
There is very little space in front to enable one to capture the front in it's full grandeur, so I had to make do with whatever I could!!
