なぜだかこのお寺は大学生が多い様です。家内の立ち聞き情報によると「長谷寺での紫陽花見学」がアクティブラーニングの課題の様。「こんなのありか...」と呟いてしまいました。

For some reason, this temple seems to have many college students. According to the story that my wife overheard, "Hydrangea tour at Hase-dera" seems to be an issue for active learning.I immediately muttered, "Can this be an issue ...

At a college for the Deaf, Leger Way, Doncaster, South Yorkshire, England, United Kingdom. Date unknown, circa 1987, give or take a year.

About the photograph.

Those candid photographs were taken with a Minolta X-700 35mm film SLR camera, and either a 135mm lens or 80-200mm zoom lens. The roll of film was Ilford, likely to be either FP4 or HP5, as those are the two black and white film that I ways use.

The photographs were taken from the window of the guest room at the top (third) floor of an accommodation building for deaf students who lives far away and stays at the college.

As deaf people communicate by sign language, which is a visual form of communications, there is no need to be within earshot of each other or to shout over long distance, like hearing people do. Thus a lot of deaf people can simply communicate to each other between outside and inside, across a room, or even across a playing field, as long as there is a line of sight.

This Deaf guy, came over to the building, simply stayed outside and chatted with other deaf students who were at a second floor window.

Here in the photographs, he is seen asking “Why?” in British Sign Language (BSL). I don’t remember if he just asked a single word question, or it was the start of a question like “Why do you…”

In BSL, the sign is done by a tapping the side of index finger to the front of the opposite shoulder, and kind of bounce it off your shoulder (as seen in the second photo).

The facial expression is often used to express the kind of mood. For example: A curiosity “Why do you ask?” or an angry “Why did you do that?”

The photographs were taken about slightly more than a second apart, just the length of time to manually wind on the film, as I did not have the motor drive at that time.

Why did I take those photos?

In 1985, in my last year at a deaf school, I decided that I wanted to attend college to study photography with the aim of becoming a working photographer. But the teacher explained to me that it is not something suited for me, because of my being deaf and having communications difficulties. I told my mother the same thing, but my mother and my family were even less supportive.

Today, it is easy to look back on this and recognise that it is a discrimination, pure and simple.

Despite my efforts to try to apply for a college course in photography, I ended up on a one year further education course at college, suited for school leavers unsure of careers. It was during that time, I redouble my efforts, and tried to get the kind of college course I wanted.

There were different courses available to me, at different colleges, including a deaf college in Doncaster, in South Yorkshire, which is approximately 130 miles away from where I live. Arrangements were made for me to visit the college and have an overnight stay at a guest room, so that the next day, I would have a formal look around and an interview.

I travelled by train to Doncaster, stayed at the guest house, and like any good photographer, I bought along my camera. I decided to do some documentary-like photography while I was visiting the college, and during the early evening, I saw this guy standing there, chatting with the others in the building, so I decided to take a candid shot.

I developed and printed my own photographs, it was only about a couple of years ago, that I decided to scan the prints.

Bear in mind that a circle is the reflection of eternity. It has no beginning and it has no end. If we apply this metaphor in our everyday life, it could mean that our words and actions are reflections of who we are as an individual. How we speak and behave reflect our characteristics. Let us take time to reflect today and see if our “circle” is in check with good values and ethics. It’s always better to do good and be a blessing to others.

Happy Gorgeous Green Thursday! :)

A guy named Pecker (real name Glenn, I think) stands proudly on Howard's Knob ca. 1980, surveying the town of Boone, NC, while enjoying a Billy Beer. Pecker got his nickname, of course, because he shared a red topknot with cartoon legend Woody Woodpecker (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woody_Woodpecker).

It seems that there was a graduation ceremony at Kamakura Women's University.

There were many women wearing hakama in the city of Kamakura in the afternoon.

This outfit was worn around the 1920s when higher education for women began.

My beautiful granddaughter and her friend came for a Sunday visit. Brenna is a rising Senior at Clemson Univerity, her friend at University of SC. Friends, our future is bright with young adults such as these! Cheers.

Several other examples of this sort of thing have been done by folks in the Polar Pano group; there's also a link to a tutorial or two in their discussions and in the Amazing Circle group discussions as well.

Last year was probably the hardest year of my life. I had my exams and I started college and also battled with phases of depression which I feel I have grown past now thanks to self portraiture.

I never used upload images of myself last year as my self confidence was so poor I didn't like a single picture of myself that I had done. I felt as though my photography was rubbish compared to that of summer 2011 and so around November 2012 I tried to make pictures featuring a model to get my views back.

As I had no one to model for me on the spot I had to use myself. At first, I didn't want to show my face in the photo because I hated the way I looked but I felt as though I needed too to get the idea I was going for. Eventually, I had created a few pictures of my whole face in and I decided I liked them because I was in it and then my self confidence grew.

I feel as though now, in the space of less than a year, I like myself more than I ever have done because of the self portraits I had done. I never thought they would have such an impact on my feelings and attitudes towards situations that happen every day.

I only have a few hobbies and one of the main ones are photographing and editing. I love doing my hair and makeup, getting my camera and tripod and then walking out into the countryside and setting up my shot. It gives me a great feeling when I feel I've made something I really really like and then to have other people like it as well is an even better feeling.

I can only say an enormous thank you to everyone that regularly views my work and comments occasionally. I am really very happy with how things are right now.

This beautiful lake on the campus of Florida SouthWestern State College in Charlotte County has a sidewalk that winds around its perimeter with beautiful trees and a number of exercise stations... but don't be entirely beguild by its beauty! There are also signs that warn of the danger of alligators.

Of course, alligators can appear any body of water in southwestern Florida. I wondered if the campus was making efforts to remove alligators and keep them at bay. Perhaps there actually weren't any alligators in this lake but the campus administration was obligated to post signs in case one (or more) migrated to the lake...? Then again, maybe they were lurking in the brush or beneath the water's surface.

When my granddaughter and I walked around this lake in late May, we didn't see any. That doesn't mean that there weren't any there... it is just that we just didn't see any. Neither one of us was willing to wander along the edge of the water to see if one would surface, either! :D

Incidentally, the wake at the far end of the lake was caused by a couple of ducks. (Do alligtors eat ducks?)

One of the highlights of having beautiful college campus in Dallas is students regularly come out to enjoy nice weather on the SMU Quad.
