College of DuPage recently hosted a Black Student Leadership Conference at the Glen Ellyn campus, 425 Fawell Blvd. The conference included a Mock College Admissions game, Career Exploration Express, admissions representatives from various colleges and a College Fair.

The fair, held in partnership with District 502 high schools, featured representatives from more than 200 college and universities from all over the country. Guests also attended financial aid presentation and learned about the college search process from in-district counselors.

North Carolina area colleges, universities, and vocational schools convened at University City Regional Library to provide families with opportunities to speak with school representatives, take home educational resources, learn more about college life, and explore educational pathways. Financial aid experts from College Foundation of North Carolina kicked off the College and Career Fair with options on how to apply and pay for college. And local professionals spoke with families about alternative careers such as dancing, photography, theatre, and more. Over 300 families received “college knowledge” to prepare their teens for success and lifelong learning!

Throughout the day, children engaged in activities dedicated to Community Helpers. An officer from Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department’s Bears Behind the Badge even visited to read to children during family storytime! Free popcorn and a drop-in dance session from a career panelist rounded out some of the fun activities families enjoyed.

The second annual Yavapai Nation College Fair took place at the Yavapai Parks and Recreation Center on Thursday, May 13th, 2010, from three to six o'clock. Among the 32 participants, the National Society for American Indian Elderly (NSAIE) AmeriCorps' table stood out as it was the only public service option among a sea of university, military and law enforcement recruiters. Organized by the Yavapai Nation Higher Education Department, over one-hundred middle / high school students and their parents / grandparents were in attendance. Julie Doka, the Yavapai Nation Higher Education Director, organized a lunch and an assortment of raffle prizes from table attendees donations. The NSAIE gifted one of its cookbooks, Wisdom of Elders, created from a grant administered by the Administration for Native Americans (ANA).

Through this fair, the NSAIE had was able to take advantage of a rare opportunity to reach youth - ages 12 + to engage in public service. While certainly young, this particular group were very excited and keen to hear more about public service opportunities with, and for, American Indians - both locally and nationally. The AmeriCorps presentation, PSAs and videos streaming on the laptop was truly helpful, drawing in scores who might otherwise have simply walked past. Among the literature, a definitive stand-out was the NCCC information - practically flying off the outreach table.

Through this new partnership, the NSAIE was able to introduce a key tribal member responsible for education, scholarship and work opportunities to the myriad of public service opportunities afforded under the Corporation for National Community Service umbrella. The National Society for American Indian Elderly look forward to a lasting partnership with Ms. Doka and the Yavapai Nation and are grateful for being afforded the opportunity.
