Juvenile Collared Sparrowhawk (Accipiter cirrocephalus) flying in the late evening sun near Castlemaine, central Victoria, Australia. I only very rarely encounter this species of raptor, so much so that I am yet to see an adult bird with mature plumage. These raptors seem to like the eucalypts along the streams in this area.

Collared Doves are a pale, pinky-brown-grey colour, with a distinctive black neck collar (as the name suggests). They have deep red eyes and reddish feet. Their cooing, which can sometimes seem to go on forever, will be a familiar sound to many of you. Although you'll often see them on their own or in pairs, flocks may form where there is a lot of food available. (RSPB).

My thanks to anyone who clicks or comments on this photo. It is much appreciated.

Looking very frightened, just hope it made it. FYI - I've seen more adult pairs since this shot was taken.

A couple of Red Collared Lemurs in a tree at Nahampoana Reserve, Fort Dauphin, Tolagnaro District, Anosy region, Madagascar.

Colouration of this lemur differs between the sexes. The head and face are black for males and grey for females.

The eyes of both sexes are orange-red. These lemurs are capable of leaping considerable distances, their long furry tails assisting them in maintaining their balance.

Collared lemurs are sociable, living in permanent groups of 3 – 12 individuals. Unlike many species of lemur which are female dominant, there does not appear to be a clear dominance hierarchy within groups. Groups of brown lemurs are very cohesive, and stay closely together as they move through the forest feeding on leaves and fruit.

Collared Dove / streptopelia decaocto. Northumberland. 18/06/24.

'WHY.'

Really not a bird I associate with rocky shores, so I was surprised when this Collared Dove kept dropping down to the beach!

I watched it pecking between some of the pebbles, though what it was finding I have not idea. I've read since that Collaed Doves aren't fussy eaters and will peck at pretty much anything.

Other bird species noticeably focussed their feeding efforts on the strand line, where there were plenty of invertebrates to be found. However, you can see the CD's chosen spot looks quite barren. Perhaps it may have been swallowing larger grains of sand, to aid digestion?

All ideas welcomed ...
