This is the most challenging warbler to get in the US simply because it requires people to hike 4 hours up a mountain to find it in the Chisos Mountains in Big Bend National Park.

The CW is a high elevation bird that can more amply be found in the mountains of central Mexico. But since its nature is to skulk and stay a bit hidden, it will always take some work.

Even after finding the bird and seeing it, photographing it was a challenge as the CW flits around looking for insect like any other warbler on its nesting grounds.

I recommend visiting Big Bend. It takes effort simply to get there. The Entry gate is nearly 90 minutes from the nearest proper town. You find campgrounds and lodging there, and the birds and hiking are extraordinary. And the landscapes and ecosystems are equally breathtaking any time of year.

- the twin volcanos, el Volcan de Fuego and the Nevado de Colima with an agave (tequila cactus) pantation in foreground, Colima, Mexico. the Volcan de Fuego, left, is one of the 10 most active volcanos in the world!!! unfortunately i could not get one shot of both volcanos free of clouds as hurrican Kiko was visiting offshore, some 100 km's away.

Texas - entire journey logged 7500 miles on my SUV from Florida to the top of Sequoia National Forest and back. But the main interest was to get the Colima to finish off getting all of the lower 48 warblers off my life list. It was a ten mile hike we endured but started seeing Colima's at two and a half miles up. We saw a dozen in total and heard several more on our way up and back. We slept in the vehicle at the base of the mountain since no rooms were available anywhere near Big Bend National Park. But had a great pork-chop dinner at the lodge in Big Bend that Carl won't forget about. Nor will I.
