It has been freezing for a couple of days/nights in a row, freezing canals up. As the coldwave (at least 10 consecutive frosty days) lasts until today, I decided to go out and get my share of Frozen Canals.
Amsterdam has been called the "Venice of the North" for its more than one hundred kilometres of canals, about 90 islands and 1,500 bridges. The three main canals, Herengracht, Prinsengracht, and Keizersgracht, dug in the 17th century during the Dutch Golden Age, form concentric belts around the city, known as the grachtengordel. The morning after the coldest night in 27 years in Amsterdam.
Place: Onderlangs, Amsterdam (Betondorp, Watergraafsmeer)
Weather: Sunny, temperatures around -14 C after a night with minimum temperature of -18 C. It's an official cold wave since today (Grand Froid / Vague de froid in French, Koudegolf in Dutch)
Reason: Having a walk of around 25 minutes to feel what the low temperatures are about.
Result: I think this is the best Winter weather one can have. Sun and extreme low temperatures. The coffee tastes so good afterwards!
