Colca Canyon in Peru is the second deepest canyon in the world. With a depth of more than 4000m it is at least twice as deep as the Grand Canyon in the USA. At Cruz del Cóndor - the condor viewpoint - visitors assemble in the morning to watch the flight of the Andean condors.
The river responsible for Colca Canyon, Rio Colca eventually empties into the Pacific. Note the large basalt cliffs up river.
The Colca Canyon is the home to the Andean Condor.
The Condor`s wingspan ranges from 270 to 320 cm (8.9 to 10.5 ft). It`s weight is 11 to 15 kg (24 to 33 lb) for males and 8 to 11 kg (18 to 24 lb) for females. Overall length can range from 100 to 130 cm (39 to 51 in).

O Canion do Vale do Rio Colca no município de Chivay, está a 160 km de Arequipa, (Foto anterior) onde estão algumas das maiores belezas naturais da América do Sul. É possível contratar um tour pela região, partindo de Arequipa. O tour inclui transporte em vans e entrada no Parque do Valle del Colca. A trilha passa por paisagens deslumbrantes, atravessa aldeias e pastagens com rebanhos de alpacas, lhamas e vicunhas.
O Vale del Colca, é uma reserva nacional peruana, criada há 25 anos atrás para proteger os condores da região, pois essas aves são consideradas sagradas pela cultura andina e eram caçadas para trazerem proteção. Na época da criação da reserva, haviam apenas 25 condores na região. Hoje esse número chega aos 60.

The Canion of Colca River Valley in the town of Chivay, is 160 km from Arequipa, (photo above) where some of the greatest natural wonders of South America You can hire a tour of the region, from Arequipa. The tour includes transportation and entry into vans in the Park Valle del Colca. The trail passes through breathtaking scenery, through villages and pastures with herds of alpacas, llamas and vicuña.
The Valle del Colca is a Peruvian national reserve, created 25 years ago to protect the condors in the region, as these birds are considered sacred by the Andean culture and were hunted to bring protection. At the time of the creation of the reserve, had only 25 condors in the region. Today that number approaches 60.

Waiting for the flight of the Condors (and other birds) at Colca Canyon, located about 100 miles (160 kilometers) northwest of Arequipa. It is Peru's third most-visited tourist destination with about 120,000 visitors annually. With a depth of 10,725 ft (3,270 m) it is one of the deepest in the world and more than twice as deep as the Grand Canyon in the United States.

Peruvian's must be some of the world's best constructors of terraces. The landscape of Colca Canyon has been terraced and farmed for over a millennia, predating the Inca by centuries. This view captures just some of the extensive network of terraces around Rio Colca still used today for their original function.

Colca Canyon
La "Cruz del Cóndor", en el "Cañón del Colca" (Perú) es el hábitat ideale para el cóndor andino, y allí se dan cita diariamente cientos de turistas curiosos y ansiosos por ver volar a estas magníficas aves, aunque no todos los días llegan a verlos... La presencia de los ruidosos humanos no es de su agrado, y si han comido bien recientemente pueden no salir a volar ese día ya que son capaces de resistir 5 semanas sin volver a comer.
The "Cruz del Cóndor" in the "Colca Canyon" (Peru) is the ideal habitat for the Andean condor, and hundreds of curious tourists gather there daily, eager to see these magnificent birds fly, although not all days they get to see them... The presence of noisy humans is not to their liking, and if they have recently eaten well they may not fly out that day since they are capable of resisting 5 weeks without eating again.

The Colca Canyon (Cañón del Colca) is thought to be the deepest canyon in the world. Here, the Colca River is about 1800 m (6000 feet) below this point. But at its deepest point, the Canyon is more than twice this deep (and twice as deep as the Grand Canyon). This picture was taken at an altitude of approximately 4000 meters (13,000 feet).
