If you’re caring for a loved one living with Alzheimer’s disease, or any other form of dementia, you may find yourself looking for ways to engage with your loved one while connecting with other caregivers. Visiting a local memory café may be just the thing you’re looking for. Memory cafés are excellent resources for caregivers, their loved one’s living with memory impairment, and for those with any form of mild cognitive impairment.

What is a Memory Café?A memory café is typically hosted or facilitated by local health care professionals and provides resources to those affected by dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. They are also excellent places to meet other people facing similar challenges as you and your loved ones. Memory cafés are hosted in various locations, including your local coffee shops, restaurants, senior centers, senior living communities, and libraries. Typically, the memory café will be open on the same day and time, whether it be once a week, every other week, or once a month at the same time and place.

What happens at a Memory Café?Memory cafés are meant to be visited by caregivers and their loved ones together where they can socialize, take advantage of educational resources, get support from others, and enjoy engaging activities geared toward those with memory impairment. Activities can vary from one memory café to another and revolve around having fun while reminiscing about the good old days. Listening to music, engaging in an arts and crafts project, dancing, looking at pictures, and having discussions about the past are just some of the activities that may be offered at your local memory café. Of course, everyone is encouraged to make new friends and develop deeper relationships with their loved ones.

Where is my local Memory Café?The memory café originated in the Netherlands in the late nineties to break the stereotypes and stigmas associated with Alzheimer’s disease. Since then, they’ve become popular throughout Australia, Europe, and the United States. If you’re interested in visiting a memory café, inquire at your local senior center, library, or with your loved one’s physician. You can also check online to find a memory café near you. If one doesn’t exist in your area, consider working with others to start one.

If you’re still unsure if a memory café is suitable for you and your loved one, consider visiting one alone first to talk to those in attendance and get a feel for how it works before bringing your loved one along.

Cognitive development refers to reasoning, thinking and understanding. Cognitive development is important for knowledge growth. In preschool and kindergarten, children are learning questioning, spatial relationships, problem-solving, imitation, memory, number sense, classification, and symbolic play.

cognitive test, Provincetown, Mass.

The decline in Jean's cognitive abilities is drastic. She cannot hold a thought, even through a single sentence. And yet, like many people who suffer from Alzheimer's she has replaced her anger with cheerfulness and I get the impression she is no longer suffering like she was.

We had lunch together today. From the time she ordered her food until the time it arrived she did not remember what she ordered. And when the food came, she did not want to eat it, begging the host for just a little ice cream. That made him smile and he reminded her of the rule: no ice cream for Jean until she eats a little something healthy. But he was not cruel. She had one bite of chicken and one bite of greens and he brought her a scoop of ice cream complete with chocolate sauce.

Today, she was in Minneapolis for the first part of our conversation. Later, she shifted to the bay area. She confided in me, in a whisper, that sometimes she cannot remember. "For instance," she said, "I am never sure if John is dead or alive."

She remembers her husband. She remembers her grandson. She remembers me, and a few select friends. But beyond that, it's difficult to say what she does and does not know.

She carries with her at all times two things: one is a book of photographs, largely of John, and a few friends. The other is her 1993 diary of her trip to Germany. It is the first thing she wants to talk about and if you allow her, she will take you on a journey through their entire trip.

She tells stories only she can understand. She begins with a thought, but 20 or so words into it, the story changes because she cannot remember what she said before. The last time I was with her I recorded her. Listening to her words when I got home, I was struck with the realization that she must sometimes feel both trapped and freed by this awful disease.

It is her one year anniversary at her new living community. I don't remember having any misgivings about moving her on that fateful (and quite awful) day, but if I did, I don't have them anymore. She is where she needs to be, with people who love her.

I'm sure the staff puts on a show when visitors arrive, but even so, people come up to me and tell me what a delight Jean is. This is no surprise to me or anyone who knows her: she is the consummate hostess. She is the erudite reader among her peers there. And now that something, some chemical, has changed in her brain, she gladly suffers fools.

Perhaps most interesting to me are the hours she keeps. The other day I stopped by at 7:30 PM after work and she was already sleeping. The staff told me that she often goes to bed early, and sometimes does not come down until 10 AM. I asked her whether this was what she wanted, whether she was keeping busy, and she told me that for the first time in her life she wanted just to relax.

Good on you mom.

a 367-foot (112 m), 33-story hotel in Los Angeles, California, constructed between 1974 and 1976.[6] It was designed by architect John C. Portman Jr.. The top floor has a revolving restaurant and bar. It was originally owned by investors that included a subsidiary of Japanese conglomerate Mitsubishi Corporation and John Portman & Associates. The building is managed by Aimbridge Hospitality (IHR), and is valued at $200 million.

The hotel and its architect John Portman have been the subject of several documentaries and academic analyses.[7][8]

Fredric Jameson discusses the hotel in his 1984 essay, "Postmodernism, or, the Cultural Logic of Late Capitalism," and in his 1991 book by the same name.[9][10] He writes that

the Bonaventura aspires to being a total space, a complete world, a kind of miniature city (and I would want to add that to this new total space corresponds a new collective practice, a new mode in which individuals move and congregate, something like the practice of a new and historically original kind of hyper-crowd).[11]

In his book Postmodern Geographies: The Reassertion of Space in Critical Social Theory (1989), Edward Soja describes the hotel as

a concentrated representation of the restructured spatiality of the late capitalist city: fragmented and fragmenting, homogeneous and homogenizing, divertingly packaged yet curiously incomprehensible, seemingly open in presenting itself to view but constantly pressing to enclose, to compartmentalize, to circumscribe, to incarcerate. Everything imaginable appears to be available in this micro-urb but real places are difficult to find, its spaces confuse an effective cognitive mapping, its pastiche of superficial reflections bewilder co-ordination and encourage submission instead. Entry by land is forbidding to those who carelessly walk but entrance is nevertheless encouraged at many different levels. Once inside, however, it becomes daunting to get out again without bureaucratic assistance. In so many ways, its architecture recapitulates and reflects the sprawling manufactured spaces of Los Angeles.[12]

The hotel is a 33-story building, with no floors numbered "7" or "13"; the top floor is therefore numbered "35". The four elevator banks (each containing three cars for a total of 12) are named by colors and symbols: Red Circle (the only one that goes to "35"; the other three only go to "32"), Yellow Diamond, Green Square, and Blue Triangle. The color-coded system of directions was a later addition, as visitors found the space confusing and hard to navigate.[13]

Several bronze plaques commemorate elevator scenes from three major films:

In the Line of Fire,[14][15] September 1993, "Green Square" elevator

True Lies,[15] September 1993, "Red Circle" and "Yellow Diamond" elevators

Forget Paris,[15] November 1994, "Yellow Diamond" elevator

It has been featured in many movies and television series over the years, including Interstellar,[16] Strange Days, Buck Rogers in the 25th Century (as part of the city of New Chicago), Wonder Woman,[17] Blue Thunder, It's a Living,[18] Starsky & Hutch, L.A. Law, The A-Team, Breathless, Matlock, This Is Spinal Tap, Nick of Time,[19] Rain Man,[19][20] Ruthless People,[19] Logan's Run,[19] My Fellow Americans,[19] Midnight Madness, Moonlighting (TV series), Showtime, Hard to Kill, The Lincoln Lawyer, Chuck, Heaven Can Wait, Xanadu, The New Dragnet, Time After Time, Moby Dick,[21] Zoolander,[22] Lethal Weapon 2,[19] The Fantastic Journey[23][24] and was destroyed (via special effects) in Escape from LA, Epicenter and San Andreas. The front of the hotel was also featured in the British children’s television series Tots Tv ‘American Adventure’ special where Tilly, Tom and Tiny went to explore a different country and were observing tall buildings and went onto the roof of the hotel to observe the view of Los Angeles.[25] You can see it under construction in the 1975 film The Wilderness Family (released a year before the hotel opened). In cartoon form, the building can be seen in the first shot of Jem in the episode "The Beginning", and in the anime Steins;Gate. In November 1979, the ABC soap opera General Hospital videotaped some on location scenes there dealing with Luke Spencer, played by Anthony Geary who was hired to assassinate Senator Mitch Williams. In 1999, Power Rangers Lost Galaxy used the building as the administration building of the space colony Terra Venture, with Red Ranger Leo falling from the building after a battle with main villain Trakeena.

In 2002, the hotel was the location for a Fear Factor stunt which involved crossing a bridge of plexiglass discs on cables suspended on the lobby's fifth floor.[26] The television series It's a Living was set in a restaurant atop the Bonaventure. The hotel is also showcased in episodes of CSI and its exterior can be seen in Americathon, Mission: Impossible III, Almighty Thor, Hancock, and at the beginning of the Lionel Richie "Dancing on the Ceiling" music video. The building made appearances in the 1991 Kylie Minogue music video Step Back in Time, the 1985 Survivor music video "The Search Is Over", the 2004 video game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, the 2012 video game Call of Duty: Black Ops II (in the "Aftermath" multiplayer map) and in the 2013 video game Grand Theft Auto V with the name "Arcadius Business Center" (having three towers instead of four towers and featuring glass elevator animations).

The hotel was also used as a setting for R&B singer Usher's music video for the 2002 hit single, "U Don't Have to Call". A pivotal scene in the season four (2005) episode "Another Mister Sloane" of the espionage drama Alias took place in the Bonaventure Hotel as well, while it was also featured in season one (2017), episode five of another espionage drama, Counterpart. In 2021, Rihanna's "Savage x Fenty Show Vol. 3" was filmed entirely on location at the hotel.[27][28] The hotel also hosted the first task for the final leg of The Amazing Race 33, which aired in 2022.[26]

Daniel Bor the British cognitive neuroscientist believes the new science of consciousness should change how we think about thorny ethical dilemmas, has published an article on Slate titled ‘When Do We Become Truly Conscious?’ Bor states “The investigation of our own awareness is a blossoming scientific field, where experiments are illuminating exciting details about this most intimate of scientific subjects. In my book The Ravenous Brain, I describe the latest consciousness science and how we are closing in on establishing a consciousness meter—a way to measure levels of awareness in any being that may be able to experience the world. Consciousness is in many ways the most important question remaining for science. But the nature of consciousness is not just a vital question for science; it’s also the source of some of society’s thorniest, most fundamental ethical dilemmas. …questions about consciousness lie at the heart of many of our most fundamental ethical debates, one of which is abortion and the right to life. …If science could come up with some means of testing for the presence of consciousness in other animals and perhaps also a way of gauging the extent of consciousness when it’s found, this would have a huge impact on all ethical spheres of the animal rights debate. …Consciousness research informs other political issues as well. For instance, how can we assess the level of consciousness remaining in someone who has suffered severe brain damage and is in a vegetative state? At what point should we let such patients die? And it is possible that in the decades to come, we might also need to start thinking about how we assess artificial forms of consciousness and what rights we consequently need to bestow on such beings.” Inspired by Slate ow.ly/dEmQC image source Twitter ow.ly/dEmOr

Post cancer, I get cognitive fatigue. This was one of the nicest Cotswold pubs I've ever visited - the bar was a simple half door, they sold belgian beers, and the food was lush. It was in the middle of nowhere.

And I can't remember what county it was in, much less the name.

No, it's not the same as your mild word blindness, I reply, to everyone ever.

What is happiness? Most of us mistakenly believe that the presence of transitory pleasure, and the absence of immediate pain, is genuine happiness. For instance, when we get a raise at work, and there is no obvious suffering present in our minds, we feel "happy."
