Garrison, Anderson and Archer (2001) discuss the cognitive presence element of the CoI model and refer to the practical inquiry process: 1) triggering event, 2) exploration, 3) integration, and 4) resolution. This can be applied iteratively (often is) as a action learning/action inquiry cycle.

From thought to action (y axis)

From analysis to synthesis (x axis)

=> For insight and understanding (again experience is front and centre of this)

Evidence shows well developed teaching presence online will likely push learners through these phases and to some form of resolution (that is rationalising the outcome or apply findings/solutions in a practical way) - usually up to the exploration phase is most likely otherwise.

Also need to look at the broader definition of ‘teaching presence’ in that this likely involves learners undertaking facilitation roles (again learner centredness evident).

Comprehensive kit provides a sensory stimulation and basic cognitive rehabilitation program.

More than 90 sensory activities including auditory, visual, olfactory, gustatory and tactile stimuli are described in the accompanying manual. The client’s responses to these stimulation activities may be used by the clinician as a foundation for cognitive gains that can be made by implementing the cognitive activities that are also documented in the manual.

Kit includes 31 functional, safe materials to stimulate the senses, including 3 communication cards; a manual that includes sensorimotor assessment procedures; treatment guidelines and goals; activities and forms to document assessment, treatment and results.

Materials (to be used by one person only) are packed in personal patient cases that can be labeled and reordered. Four personal cases are included with the kit.

Packed in a durable, easy-to-carry locking case. 13 1/2 x 15 1/2 x 6 1/4¨ (34 x 39 x 16 cm). Shipping weight is 7 lb., 13 oz. (3.55 kg).

Disposable Single-Use Personal Cases can be purchased separately. They include a toothbrush, comb, plastic spoon, emery board, feather and square of cotton padding, velour and satin. Packaged in a clear plastic box with a snap-lock lid. Materials to be used by a single patient only.

Graph showing that the brain’s cognitive and affective systems function differently in adolescence vs. adulthood. In adolescence, emotion and reward-driven systems sensitive to dopamine dominate; cognitive systems gain precedence in late teens and early adulthood.

Although the brain systems needed for executive function and cognitive control (shown in blue) are up and running in teenagers, research by Beatriz Luna, Ashley Parr and colleagues suggests that the brain’s reward systems — involved in both positive and negative emotions — still dominate (shown in red). This parallels an early surge in levels of dopamine — a neurotransmitter associated with reward and motivation — which declines as teens get older.

Teens can have excellent executive function — just not all the time

Adolescents’ brains are highly capable, if inconsistent, during this critical age of exploration and development. They are also acutely tuned into rewards.

Mounting evidence suggests that adolescent brain development is an adaptive period of experience-seeking that’s necessary to refine and specialize brain systems supporting cognitive control — the ability to voluntarily pursue internal goals in an ever-changing environment full of distractions.

i think we might be in the midst of the burst in cognitive capabilities that we've heard can occur between 15 and 18 month, which i guess makes sense since odin is 17 months "actual" and 14 months "adjusted".

quite recently we've noticed that - in addition to honing his Food Finding Heuristic, learnin' lefty loosey, righty tighty and practicing simple shape sorting - he's also getting quite accurate at picking objects out by their color!

so, although he still seems unmotivated to practice his verbal skills and we're not sure at what distance he'd still be able to see the objects - at least we know he's right on track with identifying colors which can be expected by around 18 months :-)

One of the most common genera of therapies is in the shape of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. It can treat a wide number of conditions including anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and eating disorders-to name a few. By reaping the benefits of CBT, it gives patients a sense of hope about overpowering their existing issues effectively. What’s more, it also helps people relax and develop their self-esteem.

Welcome to the cognitive era - IBM CEO Ginni Rometty describes a new era in technology and business

For the past several years, the converging forces of data, cloud, mobile and social technologies and the Internet of Things have disrupted industries and led to unprecedented transformation across every type of business. Many enterprises have made the shift to become 'digital.' However, IBM believe that digital is not the destination, but the foundation for a new era of business, which we call cognitive. When digital disruption meets digital intelligence, new possibilities are created by systems that understand, reason and learn.
