From Unesco site:

The historic town of Mostar, spanning a deep valley of the Neretva River, developed in the 15th and 16th centuries as an Ottoman frontier town and during the Austro-Hungarian period in the 19th and 20th centuries. Mostar has long been known for its old Turkish houses and Old Bridge, Stari Most, after which it is named. In the 1990s conflict, however, most of the historic town and the Old Bridge, designed by the renowned architect Sinan, was destroyed. The Old Bridge was recently rebuilt and many of the edifices in the Old Town have been restored or rebuilt with the contribution of an international scientific committee established by UNESCO. The Old Bridge area, with its pre-Ottoman, eastern Ottoman, Mediterranean and western European architectural features, is an outstanding example of a multicultural urban settlement. The reconstructed Old Bridge and Old City of Mostar is a symbol of reconciliation, international co-operation and of the coexistence of diverse cultural, ethnic and religious communities.

Hippopotamus with a herd of Widebeest peacefully grazing behind.

Even though I am just clinging on...

Since hippos can’t reach every corner of their massive body, many parasites and ticks cause health problems. The birds you see sitting on the hippos are plucking parasites, ticks, ear wax and dead skin off their back. These little birds known as oxpeckers are doing the hippopotamuses a massive favour. These birds feed on the parasite, ticks off the hippos back, and sound an alarm if they notice any threat. [credit Animal Ways]

Zitronenfalter und Biene - Brimstone Butterfly and Bee

Spello, Umbria, Italy

Spello, nestled on the southern flank of Mount Subasio, between Assisi and Foligno, is part of the club of "The Most Beautiful Villages of Italy" due to its significant environmental, cultural and artistic heritage.

The ancient town centre of Umbrian origin, "Hispellum" from the first century BC, was an important Roman town given the title " Splendidissima Colonia Julia". There is important and impressive evidence of the Roman period which coexists beautifully with today's medieval urban appearance.

The itinerary for your visit starts in the lower part of the town. You will enter into the heart of the town through the monumental Consular gate (first century BC), given this name because it marked the entrance to the city from Via Flaminia; follow what was once the route of the old uphill road and let yourself be captivated by the coexistence of isolated Roman structures, to your right, and the medieval urbanization that you can admire on the left; continue until you get to the open space that houses the church of Santa Maria Maggiore.

The Mandarin Duck is a creature of ethereal beauty, adorned with a vibrant palette that rivals nature's most exquisite artwork. With its resplendent plumage and graceful presence, it captivates the hearts of all who behold it.

This avian gem hails from the far reaches of East Asia, where it dances upon tranquil ponds and glides through the whispering reeds. Its feathers are a masterpiece of nature's brushstrokes, blending hues of iridescent green, royal blue, fiery orange, and creamy white.

The Mandarin Duck is a symbol of love and fidelity. It forms strong pair bonds, and its elegant courtship rituals are a sight to behold. The male dons a flamboyant ensemble during the breeding season, showcasing its vibrant colors to attract a mate. Together, they embark on a journey of devotion, raising their young amidst the serenity of their watery realm.

But beyond its visual splendor, the Mandarin Duck embodies resilience and adaptability. It thrives in diverse habitats, from forested wetlands to urban waterways. It glides through life's challenges with ease, reminding us to embrace change and find beauty in every environment.

Encountering a Mandarin Duck is a precious moment, a fleeting glimpse into a world of natural wonder. Its presence invites us to pause, appreciate the wonders of the natural world, and be inspired by the harmonious coexistence of grace and resilience.

So, should you ever have the fortune of crossing paths with a Mandarin Duck, cherish the encounter, for it is a reminder that beauty, love, and adaptability can thrive amidst the ebb and flow of life's currents.

In a world where toys and playgrounds, words and images prepare our children for nothing but war, how can it ever be possible to create a community of peaceful coexistence?

Will we ever be able to cut the ties that try to dictate our every movement, indeed our every thought?

A cute but invasive Nutria on the left, a Red-eared Slider and an Alligator all together in the Riverstone Wetlands in Sugar Land, Texas. Heretofore, never seen a Nutria and an Alligator in the wetlands at the same time. One is prey, the other predator. But it's happened! Coexistence. Isn't that hopeful?

Good morning my friends, I wish you a relaxed Saturday, full of health :)

the great Mosque-Cathedral in Cordoba giving testimony of a time of coexistence of different faith which brought upon a flourishing of cultures instead of their destruction. As a historian (not working as such anymore though) I am always waxing about the lessons from the past and everyone goes yeah right, but I wonder whether we really do listen and watch and UNDERSTAND those lessons, especially in view of our actual belligerant situations in so many parts of the world where war is fought in the name of faith although those religions per se should promote peace and understanding.
