Today I worked on this codfish, which I am decorating for the annual Cod Auction held by the Marblehead Festival of Art. Every year, some 50 or so artists decorate wooden codfish which are displayed in Marblehead and then auctioned off. This year, I am decorating my codfish with the black-and-white cobblestone design seen on the promenades of Brazilian beaches, such as Copacabana beach, hence the name "Rio Rita, Brazilian Bacalhau"* I recreated this pattern with collage, beginning with some gift bags (wrapping paper) that I brought home from my last trip to Brazil. I had to tweak the design to make it work on the body of the fish, so there was already a lot of cutting, pasting, and glue involve. My original plan was to make the fins, tail, and head silver, but today I had a change of plan. I decided to create the head, fins, and tail with the same paper, cutting out the black and white parts of the paper to create the design. This is a lot more work, but I thought it would look a lot better. I can already tell you that yes, it is a lot more work, but I can also tell you that I already like the results.

I finished this project last Friday, a wooden codfish cutout that I decorated for the Marblehead Arts Festival. (The idea is to auction some fifty codfish decorated by area artists.) I decorated my codfish with a design inspired by Portuguese tile (azulejos). It was fun to work on this project and I was having trouble letting this one go. (Happens sometimes; that's art biz.) I was starting to pack up Bela to go to Marblehead and decided I wanted to take a couple of pictures first. So here's a quick snapshot of me with "Bela Bacalhau." Photo by Mel Dubnick.

Today I kept going with my decorated codfish. This is a project for Marblehead Festival of Arts. Some 50 local artists are painting a wooden codfish cutout for a show and online auction. This year, I am decorating my fish with a surface pattern design of seashells, which is why I call her "Shelli". Today I went over the turquoise iridescent paint and then used colored pencil to draw three lines on each shell. I am going to go over those lines with gold metallic ink. To be continued. . .

Photos from a night a Codfish Hollow with performances by Pieta Brown and the Taken, Chastity Brown, and Jodie McGill and Fulklort. If it's been said once it's been said a thousand times ... Codfish is one of the most unique concert venues in the world, attracting top acts to a barn surrounded by corn. These photos are part of my on-going project At the Bottom of the Driftless.

Now is a good time to recall my memory that all the "chips" (fries) in Ireland taste better than anywhere in the states... They use healthier oils, and it TASTES BETTER! McDonald's going on record in the media as saying they use healthier oil everywhere BUT the US, because they do blind tests and Americans like the fatty shit better??! What is wrong with you people! Shape up or ship out!
